When you have the liability of being a school that's responsible for hundreds of children with local media sure to show up, especially when science education is poor and safety procedures are barely taught leading people to think you can die from so much looking at mercury directly (sarcasm, but a lot of people think touching elemental mercury for so much as a few seconds can kill you or give you cancer or whatever), it makes some sense. It's a waste of time and money, sure, but no school wants to be faced with a lawsuit about something stupid parents think has to do with the mercury or arguably worse clever parents who know they'll be able to make some quick cash because it's very bad PR to have something like that go to court, no matter how incorrect and frivolous it is.

Cody; when you see this, you need to buy a scuba/hazman suit and fix it up to a sufficient enough degree to swin in mercury. Tight swimsuit gloves and slip on waterproof shoes sealed onto the sleeves of your suit with silicone then duct taped carefully. The balaclava type snorkeling mask with goggles sewn in place and sealed off with copious amounts of silicone. Silicone along all potential points of entry for the mercury, i.e. along the zips of your suit etc. Breathing apparatus siliconed into your mouth. Silicone bath before hand. Silicone everywhere. Just become an amorphous blob and dive into that mercury. Your reward will be millions of views.

It all floats to the top and mercury doesn't wet things, so you could do a reasonable job with a piece of paper towel. From there if you have other metals dissolved in it from the dust they will oxidize and tarnish the surface, and for that I guess you need to distill it. Cody's done that so you can go see the video.

Do you think that a full size truck would be stable enough to actually keep it upright on the mercury? A front wheel drive car would actually be better in this case since you could turn the powered wheels, allowing it to turn in the mercury better than a rear wheel drive car. I feel strange for saying front wheel drive is better than rear wheel drive.😐
@AJman146 жыл бұрын
Hanif Shakiba - It would make it slide sideways, more that turn. AWD/4WD would make it turn.
@AJman146 жыл бұрын
TheoCampbell - In theory, but the back of the vehicle wouldn't have much drag on the mercury, so it would slide, more than turn. It's the same reason that it didn't turn very well when Cody's vehicle was RWD; the front wheels didn't have much drag/traction.
@maasmorin86596 жыл бұрын
Ideally you would have a drivetrain like a Lamborghini centenario where the back wheels turn opposite to the front wheels
@Sir_Budginton6 жыл бұрын
AJman14 with Cody’s car the front wheels basically acted like rudders on a boat, while with a front wheel drive car it would be like combining rudders with turning engines. So it would turn better as there would be more force turning the car.

If you guys could think outside of the box you could easily come up with a solution for keeping Mercury from evaporating. Say, maybe a pressurized dome for example. Then you can shove your pressure levels up your ass :) Whatever the hypothetical case may be, i'm pretty sure the EPA would be all over him. Even on another planet. Talk about government overreach.

There is already a record molded out of gold and it is currently on its way out of the solar system. It played just fine before it left earth...and is probably still in mint condition considering Voyager is still sending signals. The More You Know...

Because why would someone make a video which the other 95% of humanity using normal units can understand too, right? I have absolutely no idea what a gallon even is supposed to be, not even talking about the cubic potatos ...

Hey Cody, you work with mercury so often. Do you ever get blood tests to check whether you are inhaling or ingesting any mercury accidentally?
@ashleyteece42376 жыл бұрын
Reiss Cashmore He did a while back. If I remember correctly, his levels were actually on the lower end of normal. Cody is just as safe if not more than he has ever been.

There's a problem; the differential. An open diff would possibly let one wheel spin while the other stays still. A "Lincoln Locker" diff would be perfect for this.

Can you blow airbubbles with that airduster can in mercury?
@StarkRG6 жыл бұрын
Probably, though I think it would greatly depend on how deep it was (too far down and the pressure outside the can will be greater than the pressure inside and the mercury will enter the can instead of the air escaping).
@JoshuaNicoll6 жыл бұрын
Canned "air" is usually something like propane or butane in the can.
@witgangyounotube2876 жыл бұрын
nope it's usually refrigerant, there's no way in hell they would allow propane/butane to be used as a "air" can EDIT: well it turns out they used to be butane/propane in the past but they stopped using it
@JoshuaNicoll6 жыл бұрын
Witgang Younotube all aerosol cand typically use propane or butane as they can be a liquid at the cans pressure. Propane is also a refrigerant, called R290, I use it a bit. If by refrigerant you mean the massively dangerous ones that cause green houses, and previous ones that degrade the ozone layer, they do not use them, at all, to do so is a massive crime in civilised counties.
@StarkRG6 жыл бұрын
Joshua, please do some research before replying (at the very least read the introduction to the wikipedia article I linked). No, they do not use flammable propellants, and no, the fluorocarbons they use do not deplete the ozone layer. They ARE a greenhouse gas, but they are pretty insignificant compared to the carbon dioxide being pumped into the atmosphere (they don't "cause greenhouses" though, greenhouses are glass buildings). Incidentally butane is ALSO a greenhouse gas, as are the products of its combustion. From the article: "Ozone layer depletion: Gas dusters sold in many countries are ozone safe as they use "zero ODP" (zero ozone depletion potential) gases; tetrafluoroethane, for example, has insignificant ODP. This is a separate issue from the global warming concern."

XKCD's What If had a segment on a boat floating on various liquids including mercury.
@leifvejby80236 жыл бұрын
An aluminium boat!! :-D
@carstekoch6 жыл бұрын
I guess you mean unmixable fluids? The liquids would separate so the boat would only float on the less dense. if this liquid would be dense enough for it to float on that is. If it's not your boat would continuously sink deeper until you get to a liquid that is dense enough.
