Carolina Marine Structures was courteous enough to give us some lunchtime entertainment while we ate lunch on Poor Richard's rear deck facing Manteo marina, repairing damage from hurricane Irene. They make this look pretty dull and routine, but the previous piling snapped in two (Doh! missed recording THAT!), and there are just soooooooo many other opportunities for bad things to happen here it makes the brain hurt.
Apologies for the sloppy cameraman work! (me)

Mark Prince I have driven piles for residential piers and bulkheads and small commercial marinas for 35 years, and other than when we used conventional cranes or stationary rigs with drop hammers and leads, everyone does it like this. If you don't have the reach, you have to chain it down as we say. If the silt is not deep enough, you have to come down and tighten the chain pulling down, until you can get your reach. You have a lot to learn buddy....

Ceri Williams Pointing piles was done in older days, when drop hammers were used and they would hit what`s called hard pans, and done as well for piles that were washed in. The pile being blunt would cause it to keep splitting at the top when the hammer come down, and you had to keep cutting it off to stop the split or pull it and start over. With vibratory shakers, its not necessary and actually creates more problems. If you look at really old marine construction, (piers and bulkheads) the line of piles are usually not very straight. The pier or wall was usually notched to help straighten it out. The piles will do what is called "walk" in the bottom, its always been a problem in this occupation, as well as bottoms being to hard, to loose and everything in between. Timber piles are friction held piles, where and when ice is a problem, but during storms, wave surge is another stress on how a pile is driven. I have seen piles work loose and the deck actually float the piles out of the ground because the were not driven properly to depth and break from not being big enough. Pile driving is hard on everything, equipment, tools, men. But its easier to my opinion since the shaker come into the mix and creosote is no longer used. I don't miss the headaches from hearing the drop hammer pounding all day and the burns from creosote when a hot August Maryland day with humidity so thick you could cut it with a knife started hitting the high 90s. They were not the good ole days for me, lol.....
