Driving an RV into Canada for the first time can be a trying experience. What questions did they ask? Are you allowed to bring a gun across the border? And what exactly will Chris never do again? In this video we share our experience crossing the border into Canada. And we boondock for this first time in a secluded location we found on the iOverlander app.

Having grown up next to the New York/Canadian border, we use to ride our bicycles across the bridge all the time without any issues. Then in the mid 1990s things changed and it started to become harder to cross back into the US. Back in 2014 it took us 2 hours at 10 PM to cross back into the US with only 4 cars in front of us. We later found out the customs officer was in training and was going beyond being thorough with everyone. Later crossings with our dog, to visit family, we never had any issues. Really the only thing is, since have Texas plates, they always want to know where our gun is. We have never attempted to cross with one. Thank you for sharing your experience. Only wish we could be doing that trip as well; it looks so exciting.

We crossed over a few weeks ago at the same location. It was just as easy and the border person never asked for our dogs papers either. Now, we were advised when we came back to the USA that effective August 1 2024 there are new requirements for bringing you pet and to check the border website. Also, USA would not allow uncooked eggs or uncooked chicken (frozen or fresh) regardless if you had a USDA sticker on or not. They took our dozen eggs and 2 packages of frozen chicken (bird flu is what we were told). Had we cooked it the night prior we would have been fine. Enjoy your trip!

@@oureverydaygetaway I went to the CDC website today. My understanding is as follows. Dog must have ISO microchip. If off label chip, dog must be rechipped with ISO or owners must provide scanner to verify dog identity. Current rabies cert with iso chip number on cert and signed by licensed vet in country of origin. Verification by serology of rabies status by CDC approved lab (2 in US and 2 in canada). Lead time 4-6 weeks for results. Must be done within 45 days of entry and good for 1 yr. Submission online for CDC Import cert. Must include upload of all information above, pictures of dogs teeth, and Verification of one owners passport. Cert must be approved by CDC and available to customs upon entry. Lead time is 30 days up to 6 weeks for processing. If no cert or cert pending, entry to US must be at designated entry points with CDC quarantine facilities. Dog will be placed in quarantine at owners expense. There are guidelines going into effect july 1 for the transition period until August 1. I did not review those

Some border crossings can be quite simple we use to live real close to the Canadian border many many years ago in our younger years and never needed anything to cross it use to be simple but sometimes.now a bit more.can be involved but that one looked pretty easy. That was strange not a question about Tucker and so glad you got to.keep the wine and whiskey!! We dont mind boondocking but secluded alone like that with a chance of large animals would for sure make me nervous. Safe travels

Welcome to Canada! I am retired and have been full timing for 7 years. I am currently in Quebec on my land and will head for Arizona as usual in October for the winter. I haven't paid for a campsite in 7 years and boondock 100% of the time. My RV is solar powered. And there is no need to worry about animals while sitting around the fire at night. Bears are generally more afraid of you than you are of them. I live in bear country, and have recorded a black bear 30 feet from the door of the RV on my trail cam. I see them once in a while while hiking, but have never had a problem with them. You can buy a canister of bear spray to carry if you are going to be hiking in grizzly country, which is most of the mountains in Canada. I have done a lot of hiking in the Canadian Rockies, and have only seen one grizzly, and he was a mile away. Enjoy your time in Canada!

@@oureverydaygetaway You will love Arizona. It is fantastic for boondocking. I imagine you have checked out online about the LTVAs near Quartzsite, Arizona? I think its $180 for 6 months, and they provide fresh water and dump stations. You can stay closer in towards town and the water and dump stations, or you can drive a few more miles and have more privacy out in the desert. Or you can do what I do and drive about 20 more miles and have no neighbours within 1/4 mile. I am however equipped with 1800 watts of solar panels and 900 amp hours of litium iron phosphate batteries. I also have a compost toilet and a 100 gallon fresh tank in the bed of the Ram. I have an on demand water heater, and the RV is heated solely with a Big Buddy heater. An RV furnace fan is a huge drain on electrical power and getting away from that means more time between battery charges, or generator running, etc. And i have a huge 120 volt home fridge with slide out freezer drawer with ice maker. This takes half my solar power but it is worth it to me as I am full timing. The other nice thing about the Quartzsite area is that it is probably the warmest part of Arizona in the dead of winter as it is only around 850 ft ASL. Most of Arizona is higher than that.

Welcome to Canada! I have gone through the border numerous times since the 80's and never had a problem crossing into the US. I once was even waved through without having to stop. Unfortunately 9/11 changed all that and security, on both sides, is necessary for all the reasons we know. It's still an easy process most of the times. If you are chosen randomly for a secondary inspection it's still very easy, just answer all the questions honestly and it will be over quite fast.

Sorry guys, but your friend didn't do his research right. Generally, you can't have a firearm on you in Canada. If you have one, it should be locked up and in the trunk of the car. The only 2 reasons that you will have a permit are hunting or going to a shooting club. That's the same the other way. As a Canadian, I can't bring a firearm into the USA unless I'm going hunting, and I can prove with my reservation.😊

@lucmorel2958
@lucmorel2958 2 ай бұрын
@@buzzward812 True and false Americans crossing the Canadian border with a gun must have a "valid purpose" for importing the firearm. Transporting firearms through Canada is not difficult if they fit this classification, as non-restricted guns can also be brought into the country by people who are driving through Canada to or from Alaska. Travelers who declare a non-restricted firearm, such as a US citizen going on a hunting trip with a shotgun, can sign an RCMP Non-Resident Firearms Declaration upon arrival at Canadian border. Due to legislation introduced in October 2022 that prohibits the sale, purchase, or transfer of handguns within Canada, bringing a handgun across the Canadian border is likely no longer possible. Assault-type weapons, fully automatic or converted automatic guns, and handguns with a barrel length of 4.1 inches or less are part of this category. Visitors to Canada are not allowed, under any circumstances, to import a prohibited firearm. Certain knives are also included in this category, including automatic knives such as "switchblades" and "butterfly knives" (it does not matter if they will be used for hunting or fishing).

The border crossings out west i will say are easier & not as busy as the ones here in Ontario. Your gonna love Calgary & Banff its some of the best we have to offer. Cheers & safe travels 😊😊

We've crossed the Canadian border while RVing several times. Never had any issues. Just we to Alberta in June. The crossing was a breeze. Canadian boarder agent was super friendly. Seems ever KZfaq channel tends to over hype these crossings.

Ours would have been much less stressful had Chris put the cameras away. Seeing so many other KZfaqrs crossing and filming we didn't think it would be an issue. When crossing any boards we now make sure to have the cameras away.

@@oureverydaygetawaysuggest you do way more research about your dog situation. This is a US Federal "import" regulation starting August 1. We have friends who live in Canada and routinely come to the US for dog shows. The paperwork is pretty detailed and must have vet work completed in primary country of residence. You simply cannot try to get in to see a Canadian vet because paperwork must be completed by your US vet. She is still trying to find out if this process is every time they cross or another frequency. She told us 2 weeks ago the US customs is very serious about this and will not let you cross (even as American citizen) or the dog(s) will be removed from you. They received warning paperwork when crossing early June. At this point they are not sure if they will be able to cross with their Canadian dogs after August. While this may be your dream trip I would strongly suggest you back up and regroup

@@Gordie1450 Canadian border patrol has strict rules for bringing handguns into the country. Some handguns are prohibited, while others are considered restricted and require a permit: Prohibited handguns These include handguns with a barrel length of less than 4.1 inches, .25 and .32 caliber handguns, and certain military style weapons. Visitors to Canada are not allowed to import prohibited firearms, even if they have a license for that class of firearm.

@@RamblinRoadiesReally...yeah right. Hide the dog =going to jail. I can assure you US customs will be searching every vehicle. As I noted above we have Canadian friends who routinely cross for dog shows. She said the paperwork and vetting process is intense. They received warning paperwork when crossing 2 weeks ago as well as verbal cautions from US customs. She is still trying to find out if they have to jump thru these hoops every time or if there is a time limit. For her the vet process was expensive...like getting a doggy passport. They may not be able to cross anymore because of expense. US customs will not let you cross even if US citizen and/or dog will be removed from owners. My understanding paperwork must be done in country of residence. My friend said Canadian vets are not able to complete paperwork and vetting for us dogs.
