Driving Sports TV - 2013 Acura RDX Reviewed

Ryan travels to the American Southwest to test the 2013 Acura RDX. This new model is significantly different than the outgoing model (from our 2011 Winter Special): the Turbo 4 has been changed out with a V6, ground clearance has been increased and the ride has been improved significantly. As equipped, the RDX we tested with Tech Package and AWD costs around $40,000.

Wow, a real answer from the Author. I appreciate this! Good show by the way! Just please focus a bit more on handling and the feel of driving, even at the limit.

Great review Ryan! I've always liked Acura for the simple fact that they make wonderful luxury cars for bargain basement prices.

That's not a bad way to look at it, though I doubt we'll see a Type-S. Perhaps we'll just see SH-AWD return, for a mid-cycle refresh. Pity that buyers will have to wait, though, and that they got shafted on losing SH-AWD in the first place. If they wanted CR-V AWD, they could've saved money and bought a CR-V. :-] Great review as always, sir.

The old one was sporty, the new one is refined in the sense of luxury. They did the right thing for sales, though I'm sure enthusiasts will miss the turbo-4 and SH-AWD.

Personally i'd rather own an EX35 if i was looking for something in this segment. But thats just my opinion. That was a great overview of the car

the navigation in the old acura was the one in present accords. The new rdx has the navigation unit from the TL which is pretty good

To be fair, the previous RDX was targeting a sportier audience. This new one is all about refinement and... well, they also hope to sell a lot more. No need for dual pipes for this new target buyer.

You mean why do I not spew hate vitriol for the RDX moving to a V6 over a Turbo 4? Or the adoption of a basic AWD system over the vastly superior SH-AWD system? As much as I like what I like, in this vehicle they didn't benefit the target customer. That said, I *really* hope they have a Type-S with SH-AWD, firmer suspension, add slightly heavier steering feel and - yes - keep the same V6... just tweak it a bit for a few more HP.

@mokos23 More fun to drive or not, the reason they changed the engine is to provide way better fuel economy. This one has more HP too.

I really liked that turbo-4 motor. Honda needs to do more turbocharged engines.

The SH-AWD is great on my RDX 2007 (introduction year) and I would miss that on the new version. The new engine appears to be better but they did not mention acceleration and performance just fuel economy. The original RDX was ahead of its time in 2007 with features that are now being introduced on modern vehicles. At the 35k price range I still don't think they are going to sell a lot of these vehicles.

Honestly If I where cross shopping in this class I would gladly and easily over look the RDX for a BMW X3, Infiniti EX, Audi Q5 or Mercedes GLK. The 2013 RDX is an overall improvement but I'm afraid it is barely a serious competitor let alone on par with the prestige of its cross country rivals like Lexus & Infiniti let alone its German opponents like BMW, Audi & Mercedes Benz. In all Acura's only strong suit is "value", that is their clientele's attraction.

I am glad that they moved from a 4-turbo to a 6-cyl. I am considering this car now and would not be considering it if it still had the 4-turbo. (I am moving from an older FX35.) I think that turbos are not as long-lived as normally-aspirated engines.

I think the 2013 RDX is okay looking. It is sure not ugly like the current Honda Pilot (that car looks like a cinder block on wheels). I kinda hate to say it, but, Hyundai and Kia (yes, I know, basically the same company) make beautiful cars now. The Kia Optima and Sportage are really good looking cars. I am not as interested in them as I am an Acura though.

It seems as though honda sings a swan song everyday now... sad... and I hope acura adds something interesting soon. To me it seems that honda could have simply outperformed the competition if they updated what they already had but the majority of people are satisfied by the ordinary so thats probably out of the question. The first gen RDX was so ahead of its time and looks like its going to be the first "classic CUV"
