When my dad first announced that he has bought one of these as a family car I was appalled, I couldn't get over how damn ugly the front is. But this review of the car itself as a car to drive, a car to own and how useful it is as an MPV is absolutely spot-on, it is just such a good car to own practically. To see one modified and sounding and looking good is something of a bonus for me!

Yeah, the multipla is fugly. But the 3 seats in front are lovely. My dad owned one. You would not believe how happy I was with that middle seat.

I actually loved the mulitpla as kid just because I could sit in the front between my parents when we was driving anywhere. Made me felt like a grown up at the time!

It is hideously beautiful and so practical. My father hated it when first announced but then saw it in person at the frankfurt car show and fell in love. We had one of the first imported into the UK and people used to snap their necks back in 2000 when they would see it for the first time. This car was great for families. Top gear loved it too. There was a sort of mutual respect between owners, who would nod at each other when they passed in their multiplas.

This is "The Room" of the motor industry. Instead of being so bad it's good, it's so ugly that it's actually kind of beautiful in a strange way.

I had one. An underrated car, practicality 10/10, fun to drive 8/10, reliability 8/10, looks 1/10 (I had the "facelift" model).

Certainly one of my fav cars of all time. I took my first one round Lidden Hill grass track after disconnecting the ABS, great fun!!!

I love the Multipla, it's just so ridiculous but insanely practical. Also it was available with a factory bodykit, and I have a strange fascination with factory made bodykits, especially from the 90's and early 2000's.. That Fiat thought making a bodykit for the Multipla was a good idea is just hilarious to me

multipla is the automotive equivalent of comic sans, it's so ugly that it's a joke by itself

I currently have one as my winter car. Cost me 100€ 3 years ago and still drives with only 60€ invested in new brakes. The style is so bad that it is funny and in 3 years i never see one other so you drive a very rare car. It is the perfect conversation starter, and if you dont take your self to seriously its just funny how people react to it. And when the summer comes i get out my BMW 635csi and enjoy the looks of my BMW even more

Fiat Multipla is an example of an Italian Manufacturer trying so hard to make sure every feature in their car is working and then only remembered that they need to design the exterior on the deadline day.

hahaha no way. This hits way too close to home. I was born and raised in California however my entire family is based in Switzerland which meant yearly visits to Switzerland throughout my childhood. I vividly remember pointing out every single Fiat Multipla as a kid and laughing about how ferociously hideous they were. I used to call them "blubber cars" because of how the windshield jelly rolls into the hood. What a genuinely god awful looking car, I would totally buy one of these in the States nowadays if I could, just so I could say "fuck this fugly ass car" every time I walked up to it. I would drive it with pride, with a shit-eating grin from ear to ear every time.

I've owned 7 of these wonderful cars - they don't come practical than this. I still have the last 2, all have been diesel except the 1st one, I found the petrol didn't have any 'go' - I think it got up and gone! Lovely, comfortable, reliable and economical - keep it serviced it'll last a lifetime.

I don't know how many of you guy have been in a multipla but it's actually one of the most comfortable rides I've ever had. You seat fairly high with a great visibility and there is a huge amount of head and leg room. So despite the fact it is objectively ugly I think we should pay more respect to this car. To give a different perspective todays car maker are too coward to attempt at doing something original as this.

the middle seats can be removed from the car. the multipla offers SO MUCH SPACE!

I have a 1.9JTD ELX 'Ugly Bug', it's #6 (1 petrol, 5 diesel), my first was the 1.6 petrol, it didn't last long because it was woeful on power and not very economical, it was everything a Multi can be but I wanted some economy so I got a diesel, my MPG went from 26 to 50. Not only that but the diesel is a lot livelier too. I can't say a bad word about, they are amazingly reliable. Like any car they have their foibles - rear swing arm bearings is the biggest pain but I've only had to do that job twice in 6 motors, so I can't complain too much. On long runs they are very comfortable and not tiring to drive, I go to both Munich and The Algarve several times a year and have never had a problem. Some people hate them but they are usually people who have never owned one, once you have you'll be lost to find anything so practical - it's a car for 6, take out the 3 seats in the back and you've got a van, the volume will amaze you, it's like owning 2 vehicles in one. Mine is now 16 yrs old and I'm not ready to let go of it for a while yet. When they gave it a 'face lift' they killed it, it just looks like any other shed on the road now. Most Ugly Bug drivers do give a wave or a flash of lights when they encounter another Bug, there's a sort of camaraderie amongst us and we can recognise the shape of the car without having to look at the car's badge first. Stay safe people.

I had two of these and they are a great car to drive.....and also they look the business when driving downs dark line and have the headlights and fog lights on.... A very under rated car....

I had a multiple for 3 years. Excellent handling. Good mir range punch. For a Fiat, surprisingly reliable Traded it in for a larger vehicle.

In Italy a the time we blamed FIAT calling it "bruttipla" (it's a blend from italian word ugly and multipla) because we didn't know they were going to restyle it making it worse. Anyway it's not been so bad and it's still an original and very useful layout that had a lot of success and it proven to be a reliable vehicle.
