Driving too close to horse riders

A motorist driving a Chrysler Estate car down a narrow country lane is a little impatient, the riders where just about to pull in at a safe place but the driver could not wait and decide to squeeze past , the riders both air their anger and frustration, a passing local taxi driver gets told all about it.

If your horse is so twitchy don't take them on the road, I always find riders never pull in to let cars go past

as a rider myself, this comment infuriates me. I always try to pull into let them pass when and where i CAN but where they are, without a layby in sight where do you expect them to go? up into the bush? no, you should respect horse riders and the horses, your car cannot suddenly spook out on you, your car cannot suddenly buck the people, your car cannot throw you. passing a horse like this can cause all the above to happen. Pass wide and slow when it is SAFE/when the riders tell you it is okay to do so. It is in the LAW to pass riders WIDE and SLOW when you CAN. but a narrow road like this? better and safer to just stick behind them until they find somewhere to get out the way.

What a pathetic horse rider. She obviously hates all cars even when they driver slowly and carefully past her. If she has a problem with that sort of driver she really should not be on the road herself.

Don't be silly, the car driver was as far over as he could get without driving through the hedgerow and definitely left a gap a lot wider than 6 inches. It would probably have helped if the horse rider kept to the left of the road as they are obliged to do.

You're obviously not familiar with the highway code then. If that horse had spooked or slipped then that would be half a ton animal through your window. Cars have to give way to other road users. If they had waited, the riders could have pulled in and let them pass safely. If a rider can reach out and touch the car they are way too close

Well it is obvious from your response that you are not very conversant with the highway code. Cars do not need to give way to other road users just because they are cars, and horses do not have any rights above cars. Also the horse rider (and obviously yourself) needs to learn about Highway code rules 52 and 53.

Still they should be respectful and stop if they won't fit. Plus roads originally were made for HORSE and carriage. Then cars came along.

if u think back on it, horses were here way before cars, horses were used for transport, therefor the road belonged to horses many years before cars. it is also in the law to pass wide and slow WHEN SAFE to do so. this is not safe.

Could barely hear the car which would support the statement that the car was moving slow, gave them plenty of room. These horse riders need to realise the roads are for cars. Did you see them taking up the middle of the road later in the clip. Disgraceful.

Emilie Natalie Hi, no I am not. Horses are too stupid and too dangerous and have no practical use in this day and age. For leisure they should be forbidden from the road and restricted to bridle paths.

The Red Rider no need to get nasty. Obviously horses had historic importance and use on the roads however roads today are meant for cars which is why they are covered in Asphalt ie optimised for cars not stupid horses and their trotters. Therapy and shows doesn't require these stupid beasts to have access to roads. Also horse boxes are a nuisance.

I under stand that sometimes you have to ride on the road because I ride horses on the road to but you should only ride them on the road if you absolutely have to do it other wise don't. It's not worth risking it. Also yes I agree some cars go to fast and some cars are to cl9se to the horse but beside the road was lots of farm land to ride on, you had other options.

That car did everything it could in my eyes. It seems to me that you just don't like cars driving on the same road as you. That road is clearly very narrow and the car took its opportunity and passed quietly and slowly giving as much room as possible. Might I add this is all before you move in the middle of the road...

graeme oatley , Horses and riders have a perfectly legitimate and legal right to be on the road. If you don’t want to treat them with the same consideration and respect that you would expect to be given to you by anyone else using the roads, then perhaps you shouldn’t be on the roads, because idiots in cars don’t mix well with normal, sane people. Also when was the last time you took a look at the Highway Code?

The car was both slow and as far right as possible. I've ridden horses in the middle of traffic, and this is absolutely bening behaviour from the driver. If your horse can't handle it maybe you should stick to the corral, or accustom the horses to cars. Or get a grip on your hormones. That works too, as the horses seemed quite calm.

Okay, i understand you but the one in the taxi was going slow and i barely heard the car, he did everything right so there is no use of doing that, i am a equestrian and still i dont really agree with this, i understand horses can spook from fast cars or close cars, but dont overreact normally horses are trained for this event.

Deborah Reed yes we have a insurance called Public liability. For when we have accidents out side our home. You gotta get your horse insured at 1’ the Vets 2, public liability, 3, life insurance for the riders and horses.

Just to put it out there, yes BOTH the rider and the driver did things wrong! I am an proud equestrian and I make sure I am kind and say thank you to everyone whether they are walkers/dog walkers/ cyclist/motorcyclist or drivers. To be frank I don't care whose on the road or paths as long as everyone's being safe towards each other! Yes the driver could have been more patient and waited for the riders to turn in but the riders weren't exactly nice to him either!!! Them shouting at him after they driven away and complaining about him isn't gonna do anything apart from scare their own horses!!!! Drivers have a right to country lanes no matter how narrow! We as horse riders should be grateful that they even built off road and quieter lanes otherwise we couldn't get to bridle paths at all! And yes drivers have tax and insurance but so do horses and as much as some people dislike horse also have EQUAL right! Not more Not less! So the best we can do is driver be a bit more patient and just go even if it's 5MPH slower and riders just say calm and use your bloody manners and say thank you! It's not hard! Just to put things to rest I have my own horse and I have slot of experience on the roads however I prefer to ride my horse in a local wood at the back of where I keep my horse, which have dirt bikes, cyclists and all sorts! And I've never had someone call me out on the public paths or bridleways because I was polite and said my please and thank you! All drivers want is a bit of respect and I would want me to show that same respect. Whereas I have had a drive zoom past me and my horse honking their horn and revving their engine and I don't actually care. I know I'm kind and safe on the roads when I am on them and I can't change others actions by shouting and complaining about them (which these riders did wrong instead of comforting their horses) Anyway I want to thank anyone who reads this and hopefully you will take this in next time you encounter and driver or horse 🙂

all this is true and sorry to say it still is in the highway code and the law on this will never change but as the years hav gon on cars hav got bigger faster bigger trucks boy racers more moterbikes going faster not slowing down and to top it all a horse rider will never be in full control of there horse not matter how good thay think thay are and yes i do ride and i dont go on the road if i can help it and i do ride motobikes and 4x4 as well and giv as much room as i can just take care think befor you go on the roads and be safe you can lead a hores to water but you cant make it drink it

I find horse riders very rude and arrogant. I stopped for a horse rider cause she was riding in the middle of the road and she said that she heard a car coming so went in the middle of the road. How stupid can you be to do that ? She then had the audacity to call me a ‘stupid f*****g cow’. Nice

They didn’t ruin a bunch of fields to put a road through for cars to spread their pollution about. So yeah my house didn’t use to be a field it use to be bricks that was built up into a house

Its a tiny road with little space... Its a retarded move the people in the video are risking the horses.. They should not be riding on that small road unless they absolutely have to... Also if the horses get scared when cars drive by slowly they shouldnt be on the road
