Yes, we bought a new vehicle for the show. In this video you'll get an introduction to why we picked this particular 2021 Toyota 4Runner and why we went for this versus the new Ford Bronco, a Jeep Rubicon or even a Subaru Outback. Plus, we show off a new test location and put the 4Runner through its paces.

With the lever you have the satisfaction that the switch actually worked. With the stupid button you don't know until you go. And it is much easier to brake a button..

Great and informative review. I owned a 2017 4Runner and would say that it’s the best SUV made. I don’t know why the reviews are normally so hard on it. It’s not a CUV so it shouldn’t be in that category. It drives great for a truck based suv. CUV are just too car like for me. It can go anywhere and accommodate just about anything. You are spot on in saying that this is the benchmark of a true SUV. Thank you and great work.

As a person that consistently makes standout reviews testing the AWD/4WD drivetrains and automatic transmission vs CVT systems; I think it speaks volumes that you chose this beautiful Toyota 4Runner with a 4WD automatic transmission. My family really wanted to get a Toyota 4Runner too. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t in the cards, Grandpa and Grandma are getting older, gas mileage and third row seating comfort are king, AWD is only second. The 5 seat 4Runner’s front fascia looks cooler than the 7 seater’s front end personally. Jeep Wranglers and Toyota 4Runners are so fun, without a doubt. AWD Toyota Highlanders and Honda Pilots just fit the bill. Thank you for sharing this video 👍

Congratulations Ryan! Probably the most "evolved" vehicle ever made (most content dating back to 2003). Glad to see what real car guys are willing to spend their own $ on. We love our aging 2007 2wd as it is like a 4-wheeled anvil, polar opposite of the i3 REX it shares the garage with here in the shadows of Mt Rainier. The 4.0 is peppy enough, burns ZERO oil after 195k miles, and presents no mechanical problems as you'd guess.

this is so true. Every online reviewer and commenter will parrot the same thing: bumpy ride because body on frame, ancient engine w/only 5 speed transmission... I have a 2020 and I'm happy. I find it smoother and more pleasant to drive than the hukry-jurkiness of our 8 speed transmission toyota. And all that space in the back? Perfect for all your suburban errands. Can't wait to fill it with camping gear.

Yes. I was looking at the SR5 but I am loving that lever. Along with the wheels and a few other things, I will go with the TRD Off Road.

@@Walterrinho I went with the 4.88s, I wanted a little more bottom end torque. Vehicle moves pretty good now, even with suspension & 285/75s on her. The 4.56 gears would've been enough, but she's not a DD so wasn't worried to much about slight RPM difference. Plus I plan to S/C someday & wanted to maximize that down the road. I went through East Coast Gear Supply in NC.

Thanks for reviewing your 4runner. We have been thinking of picking one. Your review has swayed us. Problem is now trying to find one at Dealerships. Thanks again, great reviews as always

Looks like Elbe Hills to me. Those tires are highly underrated. As you just proved here, they can even even tackle some off camber muddy terrain. (with the 4WD aids)

Love the 4Runner purchase. I didn't think you would make it up that track because of the Stock Tires.

Ryan, I think you applied as much logic to your 4Runner purchase decision as is possible. Since you chose not to buy the expensive TRD skid plate, you may want to bolt on an aftermarket unit ASAP . Thanks for not taking a discount from Toyota or the dealer as this will keep your upcoming observations much more objective. K.I.S.S. > KDSS

You can also Line-x the standard skid plate and it could be almost indestructible, cheaper than the TRD skid plate

The TRD skid plate is just an aluminum version of the stock steel plate, and it looks pretty

Just found your channel. Good job buying the 4runner. I have a 2014 Trail premium with KDSS, sunroof and the sliding tray. No issues other than a new battery, tires, and fluids. Now come the mods 😁

I also got mine from auto nation... great dealership I got the SR5 premium + all the trd stuff like skid plate, exhaust, side rails, blacked out badges and the trd black wheel on it 44k out the door Ps I don’t do off roading much so did not need crawl control and other jazz. These 4Runners are kings for a reason. Love them all and LOVE this channel! Great reviews

Congrats on the 4Runner. The exact version I researched as the near perfect SUV. I just wish it had a bit better gas mileage for the longer trips (ouch). Looking forward to your adventures!

That 4runner walked up that hill like it was not even trying. I figured that there was going to be trouble ahead considering it was snowing and the hill looked wet and slick. Thanks for the great video.
