I take 3 elite powerlifters-John Haack, Garrett Blevins, and Kristen Dunsmore-through a common sport science test called the Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull (IMTP). This is what happens when unstoppable athletes pull on an immovable bar 💪🏽
The future of Powerlifting coaching has arrived!!

The algorithm used to determine the start of each pull was triggered when the lifters put tension on the bar prior to their pull-hence the low RFD numbers! We'll need to see if there's a way to manually determine trial initiation. Big thanks to Kristen, Garrett, and John for stopping by the lab! The only way to manually do this is to use VALD's ForceDecks software on your computer after you upload the results from your iPad. You can edit the test recording and manually mark the trial range. After that, you click the analyse button and you should be good to go. I hope that helps.

Real interesting. Would love to see some more insight to equate John’s bigger deadlift

In my mind, it comes down to some combination of at least 2 factors: 1. the IMTP in this position likely cannot discriminate between sufficiently strong lifters. It is similar to a VO2max for endurance athletes. When you toe the line in the Olympic 10k, everyone has a high VO2max, but it is not the deciding factor of the overall performance. Instead, the IMTP excels at tracking strength at specific joint angles over time within individuals. It is a very general test of strength for a powerlifter (more specific for a weightlifter), whereas a deadlift is a very specific test of strength for a powerlifter. 2. The lifters were unfamiliar with this position, but Garrett was less unfamiliar (because he's actually done the test before). The learning effect for IMTPs diminishes after just a couple sessions, but this being Garrett's second time doing them still gave him an advantage. He knew what to expect and how it would feel, allowing him to focus on giving a truly maximal effort.

@@DrJacobGoodin Additionally, do you think that Garrett, a sumo-style puller, could naturally express more force production from the mid-thigh position as a consequence of his focus on sumo versus John's conventional-style? In hunting for an analogue to this mid-thigh test, I've anecdotally found that those who excel in the rack pull (and finishing the deadlift's concentric phase) often have better developed glutes and adductors versus those who excel at deficit pulls (with greater force production off the floor), who typically possess better development in the hamstrings and upper back.

@@DrJacobGoodin IMTP needs power, which means strength over speed. Obviously, John is "slow" for a sport asking for power, such as weightlifting , shotput etc.

I had a feeling John would not out-perform Garrett on this. In my undergrad, some classmates did the (wooden block and chain) iso-mid-thigh-pull for our professor. The powerlifter, who could deadlift and squat over 500lbs, could barely achieve >400lb-force on his 3 trials the first day; meanwhile this taller, skinny classmate who legitimately didn't work out yanked 600 at peak. This test at least stops people from using their bodyweight to lean into it.

Powerlifters finish their effort at thigh position, however many "athletes" who have athletic conditions, they can generate maximum strength from this thigh position. It's a key requirement for many sports of "power". Powerlifters, their lifts are not fast, not "powerful", if you look at velocity/time curves of their lifts, it's nothing to compare with weightlifters lift. Actually powerlifting should be called " weightlifting", weightlifting is actually " powerlifting".

Just did this for the first time yesterday @41yo. Got 4600 newtons. My deadlift is not that impressive 250kg, buy I play as a rugby prop so that last part of ROM is very well trained. The point of failure was not my legs ok back, but my shoulder joints, I thought my arms were coming off.

I know, right? They had a pair of Force Decks (now owned by VALD) up in the weight room when I left, but still use those beastly rigs with manual hydraulic pumps and the old Rice Lake Weighing Systems force plates in the lab as far as I know. Are you a student there? For those who want to see the setup, see the image in this paper: core.ac.uk/download/pdf/214092904.pdf
