Check out what happens during an Armbar injury when doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This is also known as an elbow hyperextension injury. Often times you will see injury and pain to the forearm flexors, their associated tendons, and the Ulnar collateral ligament. It is important to note that this condition can be very sensitive and inflamed since this is a trauma-based injury.

Thanks for videos. I suffered an arm bar yesterday with atleast 3 pops what's best protocol seek a physio and pay for a private MRI? My elbow swollen I cant straighting it or bend it backs it's pretty seized up
@DrJoshJagoda
@DrJoshJagoda 2 жыл бұрын
sorry to hear that. I would seek some care or an evaluation first. An MRI can help too but eventually you'll need some treatment for an Arm injury that intense.

Question. I've had a few hyperextension injuries, most form arm bars, 1 from a FOOSH rock climbing fall. I seem to have an atypical pattern of symptoms, where initially the arm stiffens in flexion and extension, with my guarding a lot for both. Over a few days the extension improves, but the flexion remains limited an more difficult to get back. Often the triceps, and/or anconeus become very tight and painful. The only test they ever have done for it is X ray (I asked for MRI with the climbing one, which was by far the worst, but they didn't do it), which is normal and eventually I do get back to 100%, with the time varying from a few weeks to several months depending on severity. Since you diagnose and treat these injuries, just wondering if you have any idea what mechanism would be causing me more issues with elbow flexion after being hyperextended. Am I somehow pinching the muscle while extending?
@DrJoshJagoda
@DrJoshJagoda 6 жыл бұрын
jmel23515 they didn’t find anything in x Ray? Sometime you can have debris (loose bodies) in the elbow joint that affects joint motion!
@jmel23515
@jmel23515 6 жыл бұрын
nope, they said it was normal. Not even a sail sign, though it was visibly swollen and red on the outside and was extremely tender at the time. When I heat and stretch it, I get motion back for a while, but it's only temporary. After dong this several days/weeks and strengthening it as able, it starts to feel normal again after each injury. But for the most part, I have to work on flexion, not extension as you would expect.

@DrJoshJagoda 6 жыл бұрын
jmel23515 that’s interesting and actually very good to hear. It shows progress but make sure you go slow and steady. You may need some manual therapy and I’d highly recommend you look for someone who is skilled on that. I would do weekly sessions for about 6 weeks

Mine is like just tender i can fully extend it and I even continued to roll after like a 2 minute break am I ok? Or should I still see a doctor
@DrJoshJagoda
@DrJoshJagoda 2 жыл бұрын
You can't fully extend it? It all depends on the injury but its always better to air on the side of caution when it comes to injuries you are not familiar with.

Same happened to me today. How long did it take to heal for you and what did you do? I got my arm extended as I was pulling out on the last minute and maybe there was a slight pop but very minute. I kept rolling 2 min later like you.

Hello, I've done bjj, and wrestled for years, had to stop doing bjj due to my rules elbows being hyperextended on many occasions, along with training for mma fights in the process. It's been years and I'm not sure what other options I have at this stage to get my elbows back to normal.
@DrJoshJagoda
@DrJoshJagoda 5 жыл бұрын
sounds like you have been through a lot of martial arts and pushed it pretty hard. There are always options but you are going to have to deal with a lot of stretching, exercising, mobility work to help restore that.
