The right diet is so imperative in preventing cancer or during the healing process. This is in large part because of the role insulin plays in cancer; insulin acts as a growth factor in the body, which is one of the reasons too much insulin leads to obesity. It’s also why insulin will support the growth of cancer cells.
Dr. Mark Hyman is joined by Dr. William Li and Dr. Jason Fung to discuss how recent research is now revealing the connection between insulin resistance and cancer, what you can eat to prevent cancer, and much more.
Dr. William Li is an internationally renowned physician, scientist and author of one of my favorite books, the New York Times bestseller Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. His groundbreaking work has led to the development of more than 30 new medical treatments and impacted care for more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease and obesity. His TED Talk, “Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?” has garnered more than 11 million views. Dr. Li has appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, CNBC, Live with Kelly & Ryan and the Dr. Oz Show, and he has been featured in USA Today, Time Magazine, The Atlantic, Parade and O Magazine. He is president and medical director of the Angiogenesis Foundation and is leading research into COVID-19.
Dr. Jason Fung is a physician, author, and researcher. His groundbreaking science-based books about diabetes and obesity, The Diabetes Code, The Obesity Code, and The Complete Guide to Fasting have sold over one million copies and challenged the conventional wisdom that diabetics should be treated with insulin. Dr. Fung is also the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes naturally with fasting. His latest book, The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery, was just released.

This long period of fasting (12 hrs+ I suppose) allows the digestive system to fully breaks down everything and burn the fat that hence are not stored. Plus the insulin remains low during a long time which is a good thing. I learn this watching this channel from Dr. Ekberg. kzfaq.info/love/Ie2pR6PE0dae9BunJ38F7w which is interesting even if surprising sometimes.

Sadly, many parents today use junk food to soothe kids. Want some cookies, chips, candy, donuts for breakfast? Fine... here you go! I'm 61 years old and kids did not get such junk back in the day. We also only ate meat on Sundays and holidays. I don't remember a single soul that was overweight by 5 lbs much less the obese kids and parents we have today. How do we get this in their heads to eat healthy and be active?

I’m going to throw out a concern about the autism conversation. I’m an adult autistic, I’m the mother of nine amazing autistic kids (breastfed, organic fed, etc.,) and most people’s perception of autism (including most doctors) is what autistic people look like when we are in trauma. When we aren’t in trauma… we are the people of whom others say “oh you couldn’t possibly be autistic… you’re just so smart.” Well, autism has a reverse bell curve. About 1/3 or so of us are under the 80 IQ mark…. A smaller amount are in the “normal” IQ range and then the rest are in the 130+ IQ range. But if we are in trauma due to our environment, we can’t access that IQ. With that out of the way then yes… the foods we eat, the lack of breastfeeding, particularly combined with all the other physical, social, and emotional stressors in the world, can trigger the maladaptive, painful, side of autism. So you can’t prevent or cure autism… it’s a difference that makes us particularly susceptible to toxins and negative environments. What we can do is change the exposure to those toxins and negative environments and support the ways in which we are inherently different than the neurotypical individuals who are the majority of the population.And that’s where I agree with all of the dietary and environmental interventions … not to prevent or treat autism… but to prevent or treat autistic trauma.

Thank you for your personal insight. In regards to changing the exposure of toxins/nutrition…what are your inputs about food sensitivities and the ability for parents to provide good nutrition and consuming the foods as medicine?
@LisaCapron
@LisaCapron 2 жыл бұрын
@@bubblybull2463 No. The autism is ALWAYS there. The negative trauma responses can be alleviated by removing whatever causes the trauma which, in a lot of cases, does have a dietary component. However, there are also environmental and societal components that must also be addressed for the autistic individual to thrive… AS an autistic individual.
@LisaCapron
@LisaCapron 2 жыл бұрын
@@rosiewentz9624 diet is a huge component. Each autistic individual is going to be a little different as to some aspects… there are many, many comorbidities. But an organic, whole food diet that avoids GMOs, food dyes, preservatives, and excess sugar, is a good start. Many autistic individuals have sensitive GI tracts that may not tolerate specific food categories, be they gluten or dairy, for example. But there are also issues with absorption in many kids with autism which can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. We often have lower levels of intrinsic factor which means we require sublingual B12, for example. We often have issues with many B vitamins and require the methylated version. We are often deficient in vitamin D (many people are, not just autistics) despite what would be adequate sun exposure or supplementation for someone else. However, every single autistic has different sensitivities to a wide range of other environmental issues. People think of the spectrum as something that ranges from severe at one end to not noticeable at the other. That’s an incorrect visualization. Think of a slider board for a sound system. Each slider is a different issue and each autistic can be at a different position for it… be that a neutral response, an over response, or an under response. Some of these can change from day to day with some individuals, others will always be there. If nutrition is poor and causing inflammation and even pain, and then environment is butting up against an individual’s specific needs and sensitivities, and then social issues compound those… it’s the perfect storm for a meltdown. My husband knows if I’m suddenly insanely picky about every piece of clutter on every flat surface… I’m going in to overwhelm. If I’m not in overwhelm (and you aren’t familiar with autism), you’re likely to just think I’m a relatively direct individual. But I’m capable of being in such overwhelm that I’m a more “stereotypical” autistic in trauma, complete with arm flapping. But even with perfect diet, low environmental stressors… there are still things I struggle with simply because the world is set up for neurotypicals and my brain runs on a completely different set of wiring. It can take a whole lot of trial and error and require a lot of support… and I’m an adult with a degree and decades of experience in my field. Kids are still trying to figure out who they are and how they interact and what types of support they need… and most of them have one or both parents who are also autistic but are undiagnosed and have no idea of the number of ways in which they have compensated their entire lives. It’s a highly complex interplay of neurology, biology, nutrition, psychology, and emotional health. But nutrition is kind of the “low hanging fruit” where we can make a change and see huge improvements which can then allow us to make other adjustments to support the individual in fully realizing their strengths.

Li is a pescatarian/vegetarian. I have no doubt that cranberries and pomegranate seeds are good for gut bacteria, but his claims against saturated fats are the usual feint of vegetarians and vegans to promote an anti-animal protein agenda. I’ll stick with keto with its healthy animal protein and fats and add a few of his gut flora producing berries. Keto also fights cancer. And saturated fat is an efficient and healthy fuel. I wonder if his claims against saturated fat are based on studies that controlled for all the sugars and carbs that people eat along with it. My guess? Probably not.

Lori, as a T2D, intermittent fasting really helps to keep my blood sugars down. I believe Dr. Fung would agree that anyone on diabetes meds and insulin should make sure to keep in close contact with your doctor or diabetes nurse. You may find that you will need to adjust your meds and cc"s as your go on the fasting journey. You can most definitely fast! Just be diligent in checking your blood glucose levels and you may want to start out slow, maybe fasting for 12-14 hours first which is basically skipping bfast. Fasting has worked for me because I was a late night snacker. Getting into the habit of closing my eating time after dinner til lunch time the next day has done wonders for my blood sugars. Do what works for you. There will be those people who are rude and reply in sheer rudeness.. ignore them. Don't get bogged down in rules that don't come from the Dr. You can do this. Just don't go off your meds without your doc's recommendation. Good luck!

For example, people eating more seafood are probably those who agree with it (not type B folk) and have better outcomes regardless of diet, and that is the effect youre picking up, the sorting effect not the diet impact.

Sugar, especially the conventional man-made kind, is just bad. Period. Honey, maple syrup, agave nectar, dates, etc are rich in natural sugars and added sugars which contribute to spiking insulin and inflammation. Try plant based sweetness like Monk Fruit or Stevia. They're sweeter than regular sugar, don't spike insulin and you only need an eighth (1/8) or a quarter (1/4) teaspoon to sweeten a cup of coffee. You can also bake with it! It's pricey but the bag lasts a while and better for your health long term. I love it!

If you fast it increases cortisol through stress response and this interfers with progesterone for women. This can then upset the balance of estrogen and cause problems with thyroid. High stress levels are bad as indicated in the video...from life or from diet induced. So...high stress messes with hormones and one of those is thyroid. My question is then how is fasting or keto going to be ok with your thyroid. And, the one doctor says eat fruits and PUFA are good but how can you do keto or keep insulin low with fruits? And aren't PUFA's inflammatory? And that same doctor says saturated fat is bad. When I fast, my blood sugar goes up...anyone know why? And, now I am afraid to fast because I need to keep stress hormones low as I am trying to help my thyroid.

I no longer worry about glucose levels when I fast. It's obviously not coming from food, as I'm not eating any, so obviously my body is making as much sugar as necessary for my body's needs. Who am I to second guess millions of years of evolution? I'm sure nature knows better than what I think I've learned from text books and youtube videos.

@Mia Li when I fast, my glucose is not particularly low (5.1, 5.2), but my insulin is very low, telling me my body is making glucose (it's not coming from food) and the fact that my insulin is very low shows that its not trying to get rid of it. It also seems to suggest that I am insulin sensitive now.
@reinerschafer1708
@reinerschafer1708 2 жыл бұрын
@Mia Li My gut feeling is that exogenous glucose, or glucose derived from exogenous sources like cabs and proteins probably make insulin rise every time. But exogenous glucose produced by gluconeogenesis probably doesn't, or at least not much. It wouldn't make sense for your body to produce something out of necessity and then try to get rid of it again. I agree with you on the importance of the gut biome. As far as keto diets go, the vast majority of people that do keto also do high fibre. I probably have way more fibre now than when I was consuming a low fat diet. Most people that stick with keto for a long time end up eating less fat than when they first started. Fat should only be eaten to satiety, along with low glycemic, high fibre vegetables, and above all, from whole food sources.
