Autism: Getting To The Root Cause With Functional Medicine

Rates of autism have skyrocketed over the years, from an estimated 1 child in 5,000 in the 1960s and 1970s to just 1 in 54 kids today. The diagnosis of autism can be shocking and difficult for parents and families which may leave them feeling isolated, alone, helpless, and hopeless, but it doesn’t have to be that way. While we don’t have all the answers, and more research is needed to identify and validate the causes and treatment of autism, there are new signs of hope. And there is no such thing as “autism.” Rather there are “autisms”-different patterns of biological dysfunction unique to each child that result in multiple insults to the brain that all manifest with symptoms we call autism. Like every condition or illness, the key is to dig into the layers and peel the onion to discover what is really happening. It is not usually one thing but a collection of insults, toxins and deficiencies piled on susceptible genetics that leads to autism.⁣

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating children with autism. They also share specific patient stories that they have treated.⁣

George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health - a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.⁣

Please remember there are countless adults with autism too, many of us just getting diagnosed recently in our 40s, 50s or 60s. We are from the lost generation of kids who grew up in the 70s and 80s. It was diagnosed in girls back then. And we just never knew why we had all of these problems. I didn't even know what autism was back when I was a kid.

You are so right. Autism is all through my family. I’m in my 70s. And now living with grandchildren who are autistic I see just how autistic my father was who was born in 1914. I said to my sister that I wish I had known our Dad was autistic as I would have understood him so much more. She said she wished that Dad had known it would have helped him understand himself.

I'm so grateful to have watched this. I was on the verge of losing heart with our functional medicine doctor. I knew it was going to be tough but I didn't know it was going to be as tough as it is. I'm completely by myself with no help I'm also not able to work because I'm a single mom and my son needs so many services for his severe autism. $5,000 in debt already from only this year's medical plan with very little gains. My son can't take medicine and it makes the journey so much more difficult because I have to hide everything. I just needed to step back I think. Breathe, listen to this and realize that it's a hard journey. What really struck me was when he said it's expensive but what's more expensive is having a lifetime of therapies, etc. I don't know how I'm going to do this by myself but I don't think I could picture myself giving up on my son and just letting autism have him all our lives. Thank you for giving us hope.

You should feel proud of yourself for taking the initiative. You probably feel alone, but there are others out there. Find support groups with similar situations if you need it. Your son should be able to get on some type of medical assistance to help cover the bills? Some of the tests they talk about are a few hundred dollars. Expensive, but doable. If you don’t feel like your getting good service out of your functional medicine doctor, look for additional help. Good luck. Also, priobiotics helps my son tremendously. Google probiotics, kids, autism. They’ll have brands you can consider.

My son is 23 and was diagnosed with autism at 2.5 years. We’ve tried most of the trendy therapies , been accused of being “ bad parents” for not doing what parents with perfect kids think we should be doing. Doctors love to throw hardcore pharmaceuticals at these kids, but last year my sons urinary system started shutting down, urine backing into his kidneys. I thought he was going to die! Then he went off the 3 hardcore psychotropic drugs and his urinary system got better. He still has constant gut issues, often indigestion and vomiting. I do think that getting him on a diet of whole and natural foods, but it’s hard to get these kids to eat what you suggest. When I look back on pre pregnancy, I see a lot of things that may have contributed. I had a very high stress job at Intel, I was 35 years old. Bad eating habits because I worked so much and was so stressed I had no time for meal planing and prepping. I was extremely depressed, on SSRIs because doctors insisted I needed them and they had “no adverse impact” on pregnancy. I was also infertile, probably due to all the things I just described, and needed fertility drugs and in vitro to get pregnant. Also, when I was a kid we lived in the middle of cotton and alphalpha fields, and I would wake up to the harsh smell of crop dusting chemicals every day in late summer and fall. Forget the 80 percent genetic bullshit, I think all those environmental factors is what caused my beautiful boy to have autism.
@Seamannon
@Seamannon Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your story. I also think that environmental factors are largely underestimated and the narrowing focus approach of our current conventional medical system is backfiring increasingly on the bigger scale. It seems that we often miss the big picture within our civilised societies. You are apparently very self-aware and commited to the search for solutions and root causes of issues. Seeing stories like yours give me hope, it's refreshing to come accross people who prefer to do their own research and self-reflect instead of delegating every possible issue to others and absolving themselves of responsibility and agency in their lives. I wish you good luck on your difficult journey to get to the bottom of things and finding a path to optimal health for yourself and your son. Blessings :)

My son lead me to becoming a holistic integrative nutritionist/practitioner when he was diagnosed 17 years ago. We have worked on detoxing him and crowding in micronutrients and anti inflammatory foods for the past 10 years and his autism label has been removed. As in REVERSED! His teachers and other special needs parents think I’m a natzi- but it has and is literally saving his life. If only we could get out of diet culture for JUST LONG ENOUGH as parents to take their power back and HEAL the gut. Ps: he is still drastically delayed, but the “autism” traits are gone. Which autistic traits are gone? I am curious as an autistic adult who only found out in adulthood. In other words, I never had anautistic label as a child... but I know that as an adult I have not changed and nor have my traits. However, I can imagine that if I had struggled at school or something I may have been given a label. Luckily for me, I conformed well with Neurotypical behaviour and was a high achiever, so never had to undergo manic dietary changes or other crazy therapies that some autistic kids are sadly exposed to by well meaning quacks.

@@TaniaG729 please check his folate levels, his antioxidants levels, as low folate could be the cause of brain cyst, as children on the spectrum are very deficient in all vitamins and minerals, must be active form and chelated minerals. Nac, sulforaphane and glycine great help, also there is a doctor that say autism is an autoimmune disorder and can be treated with extreme high doses vitamin D ( it must be done with supervision of trained doctor as the kidney must be checked often, and there is a need of plenty water intake, avoiding calcium supplements and calcium rich foods while in the treatment. You can safely start on Nac,glycine and sulforaphane supplements, and good quality multivitamin and minerals, fixing his gut probiotics and prebiotics. Doctors don't know or think to understand that nutrition is the basis for health. Parents don't know because we believe we are doing the best for our kids nor realizing that we are contributing to their poisoning.

The thing that's difficult is getting autistic kids to eat healthy. Sometimes they barely eat enough to even get enough calories each day bc of textures and being very picky eaters and one is thankful they eat something! Throw in a loose tooth occasionally, colds etc and it's twice or more as hard to get them to eat healthy. I am thankful though that my son's vaccines were way more spread out than others and he never had the flu vaccine. He is high functioning and very verbal. He is also healthy most of the time but definitely sensory and emotionally sensitive. I home-school him and that helps him to not be as stressed and overwhelmed with too much 'structured' (and still) time in large quantities. Kids need more freedom to move and wiggle! Especially those on the spectrum! Love and blessings to all!

This was sad and enlightening at the same time. I became interested in knowing more about autism after I saw my friend’s four year old nephew. He was in his own world. I tried speaking to him but he just babbled and smiled without making eye contact. How desperate I felt, hoping he’d look at me. As if somehow that would help him connect to me. But nothing. Everyone acted like they’d given up on him. As if he’s condition is incurable, and well that’s the way he is. I don’t blame them. Not many people know about functional medicine, or that autism can be helped/reversed. About an hour or so after meeting this little boy, during which I attempted to talk to him a few times, he suddenly ran at me from the opposite side of the room and flew into my lap. To say I was taken aback is an understatement. I cradled him like a baby and he lay there as if all the peace in the world had descended into his little body. My friend who was sitting across from us, had her mouth open like this 😮 I realised she’s witnessing something unusual. I asked her what!? She said he never does this 😢 he doesn’t go to anyone. Yet this beautiful little boy, lay peacefully still in my lap until my arms began to ache. Yet I dared not move, not wanting these surreal moments to end for him, or for myself. I wished I knew what he was thinking, feeling. Whatever it was it’s left a deep impression on me. I felt a connection with him. Something deep, spiritual. I knew then, there is hope for him. Only except prayer, I didn’t know what. Like the masses, I was also ignorant about the impact of food and the environment on conditions like this. At one time, I even wondered if it’s a possession thing. So listening to this podcast has given me hope in how to help this little boy. He is not even mine. And yet it’s painful to see a little life being afflicted like this. Now another lady I know has told me her little boy has also been diagnosed with autism. Also severe. These are the reasons I looked up autism and came across this video. I thank God, and I thank you for you for sharing your knowledge and experiences. I feel joyful knowing there’s hope for these children and their parents. God willing. Ameen

She never hit her milestones on time but she would hit them but speech and comprehension never developed... It's confusing for me because I was convinced it was the V that did the damage but I stopped doing those when my oldest was 2 years old and my younger kids are completely v free. I will say ... their immune system is incredible... they rarely get sick, if ever and when they do it's always mild but the autism in my youngest and the severity of it, is making me question everything again... I honestly don't understand why this is happening to our kids today but it has to be a combination of things... I eliminated the v schedule and still my youngest daughter was affected and with a more severe regressive type of autism. It's so discouraging when you don't have a cause because you wonder if the inflammation is so damaging and for so long ... even in pregnancy and critical development stages ... is it possible to reverse so much damage??

I should add that I cleaned up our diet after 2008 so my last 2 children were born to a mostly organic and non processed diet. I stopped the 2 top things that I felt were a big component to their health. We eventually moved to a rural house as well to move away from the city and now we eat mostly organic and farm fresh foods. My youngest daughter (who is the more severe) is supposed to be the "cleanest" I just don't understand... My oldest was the one who had to suffer through my initial ignorance but he showed improvement almost immediately after we cleaned up our diet and stopped the Vs and OTC medicines... and he is thriving compared to my daughter who was born and raised with a clean diet and no shots. I'm completely at a loss.

Important to understand also, this scenario has become a cover story to explain away the incidence increase from 1/10,000 to 1/30 (Kerri Rivera monitors the data closely - that’s the current figure). It’s not possible this increase is due to diagnostic criteria, additionally supported by the fact Amish eat traditional food and do not vx. They do not have Autism in their communities.

You two talk about the canary in the coal mine, but what about the elephant in the room? The reduction of saturated fat in the American diet is by far the greatest contributor to autism and other mental/emotional/physical disorders than the change in wheat or the addition of glysophates. The structure of the brain and neural networks as well as every other cell in the body need saturated fat especially in the form of cholesterol - something that has been vilified for the past 60+ yrs. The removal of saturated fat out of the US food system (and others) pretty much corresponds with the increase of autism over this whole time period. PUFAs from seed oils have replaced saturated fat in many foods with disastrous effects on the human nervous system. No wonder there is an epidemic of mental health diseases in the Western world.

You said the magic word, Mark!!! - 'Systemic'....... I've always put the new high incidence of autism down to vaccination, for years, because it just doesn't make sense. Researching into it today here, I was looking for a familiar name, who would actually have some knowledge on the subject, and saw you here! - And omg - you make so much sense!!! When you said the children's brains were so inflamed, the gut biome, glyphosate....!!! - It's systemic! - That's what it does! That's how it kills the weeds..... Flour: bread, baked goods, sauces, etc have all been found to have traces of glyphosate in them. Ofcourse it will affect the gut. - But it's systemic.... So it goes through the whole human system! So it makes perfect sense to work on building up the gut biome first, then clear the body of heavy toxins. I'm only 8 minutes into the talk here, but I've been nodding away and agreeing with you the whole time. This is music to my ears, and hopefully people will start to be able to support these poor kids by getting their biomes in healthy working order, at the very least. Keep up this very important work. Hats off to you both.

There is a small subet of children who are more likely to get a reaction to the vax that may stimulate an over-active immune system. It is silly to say there are environmental factors yet dismiss vaccines altogether. Dr William Walsh has recommended that babies who are immune compromised should get tested to see if they have depleted levels of metallothionein (MT) as a preventative measure for autism.

I was born in 1945 on a farm. Both sets of grandparent were big direct farm produce users for food. No soft drinks or candy. But my memory’s are of only being happy when alone and not being able to to deal with people my age. Always being laughed at and abused by schoolmates. I got the blame for everything. Some teachers didn’t even know I was in the room. The high school guidance counselor told my father I was retarded. By 1970 I was a CO for Vietnam war and spent 2 years teaching autistic teenagers. 1 on 1 so very specific. Those kids I could get along with and understand, even those that basically could not speak. I later went to graduate school GSD and graduated with honors. I did that by keeping a very strict schedule. Last year I went to a neurological specialist because by my late 70s my stamina/ energy no longer could mask properly. At 78 diagnosed with ASD. It explains my whole life. I realize that my mother also was autistic as was her mother. Autism is genetic. People don’t complain well there was know knowledge at all about autism or asbergers when I was born. No one would notice except a few sensitive people who might realize you may need a little help here and there. No one thought about ‘autism’.

Food today is no longer a source of nutrition, the soil has had all the nutrients farmed out, how is it corrected? adding who knows what to the soil for a larger yield. It's all about money, I remember not so long ago when you bought a package of boneless skinless chicken breast, they were very small. Today the chicken breasts are huge. Chicken is fed steroids because bigger chickens have more meat, remember you eat what the chicken ate. The goal is to make the chickens grow faster and bigger, it means more $$$. I tell my wife, when you buy chicken look for smaller breasts, I've also noticed that boneless, skinless breasts used to be free of all the nasty stuff you see in breasts now. How can you get healthy when you think that you are eating right because you're eating the right foods, sadly most of the food no longer has any way of making you healthy, all it does is keep you alive. It's obvious that the FDA is looking the other way while being paid off to let bad things slip over into what we consume everyday. Where do you get these trace minerals ? iron, zinc, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, iodine, selenium, sulfur, chloride, boron, silicon, vanadium, nickel, arsenic, chromium most of these are mandatory for life. How many of these are in your food ? You won't see many of these in your average 1 a day vitamin.

We all think back to kids in our own childhoods who we now know were autistic but no one knew it then and many are dying now in old age and it is coming out that they were probably autistic (and their grandchidren ARE being diagnosed). Also how hard is it to get an autistic person to change their diet? Very!! My autistic son has never been to a doctor in his life for general issues, no allergies and has a surprising lack of dental issues too since he loves sweets. Nor does he have any gut issues. My two children prior to him took the SMA fine, and did really well. But, unfortunately, he couldn't. I'm still not sure what the cause was, because, he was fine until about age 3. He would say it hurt to do #2, had ashma and allergy issues, and GI issues. He is 33, now. He is getting a little better, but he will always have to live with me. I had a learning difficulty for much of school life. Now days I think I am on the Autism spectrum. However I found that when I was twelve I had had some damage to my retinas from some type of event which could not be determined at the time, but it was suggested (by my mom), that it occurred when I was a baby from a fall. At 22 (1983) I had a re-occurance of eye problems which was determined to be an inflammatory condition for which I was treated. No cause was given at the time although the doctor was sure I was doing heroine. Some years passed and I finally discovered a blood parastise called Toxo Plasmosis ghondii. This I was told, was the initial cause of my damaged retina as a baby (in utero), and later the reason for the re-emergence of the inflammatory condition of my eyes later in life (I owned a cat). The parasite generates an inflammatory response in small capillaries, but this is only evident in the small capillaries of the retina as these are in the field of view and a visual blank spot is noticed after the retinas a permanently damaged. After infection, the parasite becomes stuck in the small capillaries of the brain where it forms cysts which remain for the life of the host. A long preface I know, but it would interest me to know whether these cysts in the brain, set up an inflammatory immune response and whether this could be a constant thing. Perhaps if the cysts are dormant they do not illicit an immune response. As toxo plasmosis is associated with feline fecal matter and being scratched by them can cause infection, it would interest me to know if there was any causal correlation between cat ownership in mothers or their children leading to Autism. the rates of toxo plasmosis present in the US populations is around 34%. This is partly due to domestic cat ownership it seems, and the presence of native felines in the wild. Toxo plasmosis Ghondii is present in the wild environment also.

I know this is an old video but it would be great to find out what you guys think of using I.V. infusions. I just found a place that is semi- local to me and i went for one myself first. I kept myself from expecting much. The first night i got the infusion, i felt a sense of calm and well-being. I was having back and hip problems because I drive excessively every day and it bothers me after being rear-ended in a hit and run accident last year. With school and my kids other activities, i had had to squeeze in extra trips to my chiropractor to stay on top of the pain. On the way home from getting the infusion, my back was more relaxed, causing less pain. I had a chronic yeast infection clear up and i slept like a husband that first night. The mosquitoes even stopped coming after me as much. A basic Meyers infusion bag has B12, B complex, magnesium and vitamin C. I'm actually taking two of my kids to get infusions tomorrow. I'd love to know what you guys think of infusions and I'm excited to see what they can do for my kids.

There are so many therapies now that could improve life of your child, and also your life, Jasmine. As a grandma of two autistic boys, 11 and 7, I have been researching about autism for more than six years. Our two boys are now incomparably better than they were before. We applied the therapies these two doctors are talking about. And we did all this without any expert's help, just following the scientific literature (studies, articles) available on the internet. The problem I see with not very young person's with autism is that their brains are not as plastic as young brains, so it might take much longer to see if some therapy works. This can be discouraging. But there are therapies which are not expensive and don't require a lot of time, so I think there are worth trying, like like Transcranial Low Level Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation), or Vagus Nerve Stimulation. Also, if you can afford, the functional doctors can help you a lot.

My son is 22, he has improve a lot since he cut out diary and wheat. Taking cod liver oil and MCT oil especially which kills yeast and candida. He used to have poor communication and social skills, since on beef/eggs/sardine/low carb basmati rice/extra virgin oil/MCT oil, after 2 months, I can really see the change in him, he becomes more social, he talks to me and his sisters. It is amazing how diet can make a huge difference, I wish I have known this earlier. Do some research on MCT oil (coconut), it is a miracle oil

Autism is rapidly increasing and age of parents is also rapidly increasing. I believe the average age for mothers in 1970 was 21, today it’s 28, meaning lots of moms in late 30’s. Maybe just because the older the mother’s eggs the longer they’re exposed to environmental toxins, but the correlation between autism and maternal age seems like a big one to me…

Right! It seems nuanced. Sounds like he's saying "vaccines don't cause autism" and he's right, but what he said, almost said (?) is vaccines CAN cause autism, or, the adjuvants in vaccines (mercury, etc) set up the inflammation that manifests as autism. There is CERTAINLY a link and I'd guess he wouldn't deny it. Dr. Mark Hyman, comment?

is it just that the child reaches a point at which the brain swells (from inflammation / allergies / environmental toxins / etc) and it begins to suddenly cause brain damage? parents often report a sudden change in the toddlers behavior he was a normal toddler one day and then the child regressed. is that when? is it this simple? come up with a way to prevent the brain inflammation? could be a dozen different paths, but when it presents as brain inflammation - - we should follow brain inflammation markers in toddlers? Prevention is the best medical practice right?
@subatomicmystery
@subatomicmystery 3 жыл бұрын
I'd say the best prevention would be for the mother and father to be detoxifying for years prior to conception (quicksilver scientific has the best detox system imo), work with a functional doctor for years before conception, make sure there are no significant toxin loads nor vitamin or mineral deficiencies. These things will make sure toxins and damaged DNA aren't going to be passed down from mother and father to the child. Then after conception do everything possible to get the mothers body and mind as healthy and low stress as possible. Follow the advice of functional medicine doctors and other top experts in alternative medicine. Then make sure to have a natural birth because the vaginal flora are essential to the babies health, preferably with a skilled midwife and not at a hospital because they do all sorts of horrible things to newborns at most hospitals including injections on the first day of birth and separating the child from the mother and many other unnatural damaging things. Then make sure to get as few injections as possible as the child is growing up, as the more you get - the more chances of significant health damage. And then you just raise them right under the guidelines of alternative medicine experts i.e. proper pure organic diet, avoiding serious toxin exposures that are all too common in modern civilization, etc.
@caseykittel
@caseykittel 3 жыл бұрын
@@subatomicmystery makes sense, however things like lead, PFOAs, etc etc get locked in the mother’s bones, fat etc probably (Can not be shed from the body by detox diets etc). Maybe these toxins should be measured and a recommendation to not have children made if mother exceeds certain levels. I hope in the near future people will take regular toxin screenings. The government will have no interest in setting these limits because they are too sensitive to corporate desires. This way, over the course of your life you can track toxins as you are going through life. As soon as certain toxins begin to rise you can be alerted and change your diet, environment or behavior.
@subatomicmystery
@subatomicmystery 3 жыл бұрын
@@caseykittel Pretty sure Quicksilver Scientific's supplement protocols can get most types of toxins out of fat and removed from the body. Even lead out of the bones I'm pretty sure, although if I recall correctly, it takes several years of low dose liposomal edta to get it out, because it really does get pretty stuck. I don't like the idea of banning people from having a child,,, because the evil powers that run western civilization at the highest levels already want a massive reduction in population and that would play right into their hands. It's not that hard to detox a mother and father 1-2 years before they have a child. They just have to eat mostly pure food/water and follow a professional detox protocol. With some decent amount of intelligence, one could learn to do this themselves through online research, particularly straying in functional medicine territory because they are the most professional alternative practitioners in the US. I also recommend Dave Asprey and his company Bulletproof for health information as they put out incredibly scientific interviews and articles boiled down simply for the layperson to understand. It's not that hard to purify and detoxify your body, it only becomes complex if you have serious health issues such as diseases, disorders, and dysfunctions. In that case, it would be best to work with a functional medicine doctor.

I would not speak of Autistics as kids. We are now tens of thousands of autistic adults. I’m a highly successful autistic Nurse Practitioner who does not need fixing for the sake of neurotypical’s comfort. … I love my superpowers! Sleep and gut stuff = hard, but I’m grateful for things like Radical Acceptance, your nutrition KZfaqs…and vaccines. 😉💉 (I have to add that, as a Womens health NP, the speakers last names are not lost on me…😆 Is that on purpose for the autistics? we love puns!) ;) I think searching for the social, societal, and environmental toxins that neurotypicals generate and thrust upon autistics, would be a great way to approach a medical talk about how to alleviate symptoms. (LED lighting, speaking about Autists as if we’re deficient children or broken people, bullying, noise pollution, etc.)

Totally agree NurseK! Not only is the title of this video offensive; it is nauseating watching these NT 'docs' looking to fix something that isn't broken. I wonder if Mark Hyman has a video about the causes of homosexuality? Perhaps he could think of how we could reduce it within society... given the rising numbers. How ridiculous!! PS the intro deftly sweeps under the carpet the massive increases in our knowledge about autism over the last 5+ years! (therefore increased diagnosis and reporting - I am living example).
