Drop Sets vs Normal Sets for Muscle Growth

When it comes to the quest of maximizing muscle growth, a variety of different training methods are often employed. One popular training method, drop sets, are a perfect example. First off, what are drop sets? Drop sets simply involve performing one or more sets with a lighter weight immediately after you finish your heavy set. You can do drop sets for arms, chest, back, and so on - you could even do a whole drop set workout if you wanted to. They’re typically used to accumulate volume in a shorter amount of time, achieve a greater muscle pump, and elicit more metabolic stress than you would with standard straight sets. Which would theoretically mean that drop sets can lead to better muscle growth and mass gain. However, given that recent research has revealed that metabolic stress may not be as important for muscle growth as we once thought, it begs the question as to whether drop sets are worth incorporating at all, or whether sticking to normal straight sets would instead be best. That’s exactly what I’ll cover in my video, where you’ll learn the benefits of drop sets, whether you should do drop sets or not, and if drop sets can build muscle faster than normal sets.

For example I benched 4 sets (4-6 reps) for strenth and after that did 2 drop sets on a chest machine. started with 80 kg or 175 lbs and couldnt even do a push up after that. But muscle growth and strenth were tremendous, even tho it takes longer to recover.

I‘ve been doing drop sets since a couple months, on all muscle groups. And i need to tell they are incredible, your feeling the pump, your feeling the power. Everything good until it is…… leg day. If your in a quad-mashine performing drop sets. It will hurt so much, it hurt me so much i was 1 step away to change to chest day. You need to only go through leg day with drop sets, but i can tell that you‘re muscles will be extremely sore after a day by training this legendary guide of workout

Thats what i do. Set I: half weight double the reps Set II: Full weight and reps Set III: Full weight and reps Set IV: Drop set Set I is a warm up, sets II and III are the strength building sets and set IV is for endurance building. Going only heavy weight all the time will build a ton of strength you just wont be able to use it because you will have no endurance.

I was thinking more doing 3 sets of drop sets to failure. Lift 70% of yourself 1RM till fatigue, then dropping weight and continuing to fatigue, and so on until you’ve got nothing left, have a rest and then repeat doing that 3 times overall.

There’s evidence to suggest that the pump is actually pretty significant too in building muscle which Jeremy didn’t mention in this video. I would do 2 normal sets (10RM) and then if on my 3rd I get like 7-8 reps I drop set and burn out/get a pump. Feels pretty good to me :)

I like drop sets, but by the time I gather and put all the dumbbells back, the time advantage dwindles. So I've been going to a rest-pause modality: 1) Choose a weight that you can push 10-12 times until failure. 2) Rest for 15 seconds (To avoid two numbers colliding in my head, I say the ABC's in-time to the gym music). 3) Then go again until failure, counting. Remember your count. 3) Rest for 15 seconds. 4) Go again, counting from your prior count total. Remember this new total number. 5) Repeat until you hit 20 reps. Example. Begin with the first failing set of 12 15-second rest You crush out 6 reps. Count = 6 15-second rest. You rip off just 5 reps, but start counting at 7. Count = 11 Etc... until the count is AT LEAST 20.

I am using dropsets to: wrist curls/extensions, calf raises, lateral raises and reverse flye. It's hard to gain strength on those since adding like 2,5lbs on each side of both dumbbells is such a jump for such small muscle groups considering they are recovering relatively faster than major ones either.

Do 7 reps on left side, 7 reps on right side, 6 reps on left side, 6 reps on right side... descend by 1 rep each time. Once I have reached 0 I lower the weight and start the process again. I do it with very very strict form and have seen great results in both growth, but most importantly the mind muscle connection.

So I start off with 44 Ibs for around 15 reps, then I go to 55 Ibs for 12-15 reps then finally I go to 66 Ibs doing 8-12 reps, is this better than Drop and Normal sets for muscle growth and muscle strength?

Thanks for this very informative video. Earlier this year, I experienced muscle atrophy accompanied by a serious loss of strength in my left tricep due to nerve damage caused by a bulging cervical disc. Although the disc issue has largely healed and I'm cleared for hitting the gym, I've been struggling to figure out how to bring the left tricep's size and strength in line with the right without just reducing the overall workload. I'm thinking that trying a dropset just for the left tricep may help. Anyway, your science-based no B.S. approach is much in need. I hope your channel continues to grow.

Can we try to explain Steve Reeves? The man still has arguably the best physique we’ve seen in the sport- ever. In any era. He rested 45 secs or less between sets, and regularly used drop sets on the bench press. Modern wisdom states none of these techniques should produce good results. Thoughts?

Metabolic stress really helped me get bigger biceps but i would routine between doing 12 weeks of really high reps (200 - 400) and then atleast 24 weeks of doing normal sets and reps

Well the muscle growth i get from drop sets is on another level compared to normal sets. I split upper/lower and exercise 4 times per week. The first time i do my upper and lower respectively, i do drop sets. Next time i do them in the week i do regular sets. Best of both worlds.

I do pyramid sets for each exercise - going up in weight and down in reps for five sets. The last set is 6 reps at max weight. Then I throw in two drop sets at the end to finish off.

I have been doing drop setting exclusively lately with cardio (jumping rope, quick treadmill run) in between each exercise. I do a circuit of it and I am wasted by the end. I have never seen results and have tried pretty much every method of weightlifting. I have large muscle groups for my size so adding volume in a short period has always been challenging. I don't care much about strength but I am satisfyingly getting stronger. Last note: Although he covers metabolic stress... but the big gain often not talked about is drop setting maintains pretty much a cardio level burn. That is why my 'rest' is more cardio. So on strength training days I am getting a full hour of cardio. And on my run days pretty much the same.

First I want to thank you for this great channel. I have started doing drop sets. Maybe every second week I put in an drop set pass. I like it a lot. Love the feeling after. The muscles are just dead. I think you are right, that the recovery take longer, but if you take it on Friday and then take the week end off.

I’m not saying I would go against the science, but I’ve been using dropsets alternating between upper and lower body for two weeks. I like them because Im pushing my 4 rep max for every upper body exercise and then start dropping weight (usually twice per set) then move to lower body doing the same. I’ve been burning more calories per workout (about 100-150 more per hour). The pace feels definitely busier but doable. I was used to doing full body workouts alternating between upper and lower body previously.

This video confirms I've been doing exactly right -- I use dropsets at the end (last excersice) of my triceps, biceps, or calves workout, to completely finish them off, then I go to core and then I'm done. I already did the larger muscle groups/compound excersices first (chest, back. hams/quads).

If you have equal volume that means you have more reps at lighter weight with drop sets versus normal sets so we would expect it to train endurance more and strength less. It's not true that drop sets have to be to failure, you could, for example go to RPE8 then a drop set to RPE8.

I combine both logics. I'll usually do about 5 sets per exercise. 4 Standard high weight 10-12RPM sets and end on one drop set.

I classify a drop set with a heavy/medium/light transition as a single set, whereas the study counts it as three sets. I bet doing three drop sets (like what I described) would give better results than the single drop set described. The study would say that's like 9 sets, as opposed to three.

Not sure where the emotional idea you have to exercise to exhaustion for muscle growth started, but I use drop sets for bench press on how far I can safely go, and builds stamina. Failure literally means you pulled a muscle and won't be back in the gym for a couple days.
