I wold put thermal past on the apu then add on the copper shim then thermal past on that then put the block on, you need the thermal past directly on the apu to fill in air gaps and temps will be better.
@WinDeckTech
@WinDeckTech Жыл бұрын
I have since repasted it with ptm and layering proper shims I got. Honestly... temps were not different much if at all from this video. I have been waiting to make another thermal video. However a new company with a steam deck thermal mod has reached out today actually. They will be sending over their kit for me to play with :) looks pretty promising, albeit a little "backyard shed" looking. But I'm all for it haha. Edit: when repasting I layered .1mm copper shim, ptm,shim etc. I believe the total thickness including ptm was .6mm It is making the best possible contact it can, I'm certain of it. However I bought my wife a used steam deck, so I can at least have a new "baseline" to compare it to. I know it "should" be the same model/device with all testing however for the sake of time alone I believe it will be better to have a complete "control unit" The only thing we've done to hers is put the RGB jsaux backplate on. But I will switch back to stock for all testing.

I really want to see more content on this, hoping the wave 2 will be good. I also pre-ordered it, so we'll see what this new bracket is about for making that even pressure. They were talking about the design some on discord.
@WinDeckTech
@WinDeckTech 11 ай бұрын
I saw the new design redesign. I have the wave 2 on order. There will be an upcoming video with three steam decks. My modded deck with the monoblock and without. Then using a new cooler called Cooler deck. It is a copper plate with proper mounts thought out, then an attachable fan. It is ridiculous but I love it Basically steam deck 1 will be bone stock (to never be modded) Steam deck 2 (my wife's) Temps will be recorded from her currently stock one. Then changing her paste to PTM. Seeing as my modded deck is in a different case and has had its thermal paste changed multiple times it's "default state" is compromised. At the end of it we should know which option is best, in conjunction with changing to ptm from stock the other factors would be the RGB Backplate from JSAUX, the old style with exposed heatsink (with and without the magnetic fan) monoblock and cooler deck. It should make for a fun video As well I have perfected the mount (to the best that I can) on my monoblock since this video.

Interesting vid. Congrats on the 3k :). For the screw, you could try super glue or a tiny blob of epoxy attached to the bit (one you don't need as it may weld it to the bit) then leave it in the stripped screw head to dry. then it should screw out.

Thanks! I did try super glue, however it just did not want to bond to the metal. I will try a bit of epoxy without hopefully messing anything up too bad. I don't think the Deck actually needs more cooling. The only extra cooling I do is having the dock sit on a "cooling pad" aka a monitor riser I installed 2 180mm AC Infinity usb powered fans so that it has cooler air to pull in and the hot air gets pushed away from the area.
@matthewhaworth5935

Not getting a proper mount totally defeats the purpose of this product. I have a pre-order in for wave 2, hopefully they have it figured out for that batch. If it comes in and requires shims or any nonsense like that I'm immediately sending it back for refund, because like I said, if the block doesn't get a proper mount and proper pressure, it doesn't matter how good it is at moving heat because you still have a massive bottleneck at your transfer point. With a proper mount, there is no way it wouldn't perform better than the stock solution. It's simple physics.
@WinDeckTech
@WinDeckTech Жыл бұрын
I have since repasted it with proper .1mm shims, layering ptm,shim,ptm etc for a total of .7mm thickness on-top of the APU. This would ensure the BEST possible fit. Temperatures were no different than the video shown here. I will be revisiting it with the jsaux RGB back plate, comparing my monoblock to a stock deck then jsaux old backplate and jsaux new backplate.
@matthewhaworth5935
@matthewhaworth5935 Жыл бұрын
@@WinDeckTech the best possible fit would be with no shims at all and the block should be machined properly to fit. The least efficient part of a thermal solution like this are the transfer points, paste etc. Adding a shim and multiple layers of TIM for what should be a single contact point immediately is going to drop performance. I hope it's correct for wave 2.
@WinDeckTech
@WinDeckTech Жыл бұрын

@@WinDeckTech also I'm not saying you did anything wrong, you tested the product as you have it. Like why build a high performance thermal solution and then need to stack shims and TIM to make it fit right? It makes no sense.
@WinDeckTech
@WinDeckTech Жыл бұрын
@@matthewhaworth5935 I didn't take it that way, no worries! And yeah, like you said it shouldn't be this way. Especially for a paid for product (if it was an early sample I'd understand) TMK this unit was used for internal testing as they had posted it up for sale long after the wave 1 sales has closed. You'd think that would mean this is a high performer, unfortunately that is not the case. If you're curious take a look at the deck cooler by nupp engineering nupp.eu/collections/all They reached out a couple days ago and will be sending me a unit for testing. 30w OC potential, allegedly. The one reason I tend to shy away from mods like this (and tbh don't feel particularly positive about doing up the thermal grease either) is because the whole thing is cooled by that ONE fan. Valve inginerded the crap out of this thing, to the point where messing with their thermal design at all starts to put other components at risk. VRMs, memory, hell, even the charge controller... they ALL rely on secondary flows from that fan. Reduce those - everything else runs hot. Not worth it. If you do this, do it properly and make sure you're cooling all the other bits too.

I just refitted it with proper shims and ptm 7950. Pretty much the same temps. Stacked .4mm worth of copper layered with ptm Don't think I could have any better contact than I do. Even with the jsaux metal plate back on its really not that worth it. It does take a lot longer to get heat soaked, so in the instances of lighter games or in bursty loading or streaming moments the fan speed will be lower. The thermal capacity also allows for more room with overclocking. I'll be making more videos on it :) I still have my v2 ordered in the hopes that they will improve it. I have a steam deck I got about a week ago. is it okay to game in 80c range for couple of hours? ark survival evolved hits 80c most of the time which kind of scares me lol my other games like 7 days to die only hits about 70c so I am not so afraid of that. obviously ark is not very well optimized at all for thermals. I tried to lower tdp and gpu and a mixture of settings and doesn't really help at all for certain games. so is 80c okay for steam deck?
@WinDeckTech

80 degrees is not bad and within spec. If you wanted to try undervolting with the new BIOS or turning on the older more aggressive fan profile. That could potentially help as well. But, you can run it at 80 degrees all day every day and it shouldn't ever run into an issue, theoretically.

Using multiple layers of copper with thermal paste in between each is a terrible idea. Thermal past doesn't actually transfer heat well, it's just alot better than the voids of air that would be present between the cooler base and the CPU heat spreader. If the height of the cooler plate was wrong it's trash, it's not even worth doing a review cuz the product may otherwise be good if fixed, it will never be good like this.

No and that was the point if this video. It "can" work but it was fubar from the beginning by design. Apparently V2 is better although I've not gotten around to testing it yet. Still sitting in it's box. The one thing that I will say is a "plus" of the monblock is that it does indeed cause the fans to not as high of an RPM howver the flip side of that is the monoblock itself gets quite warm from the heat spread. I'm going to be working on an all backplate test for the ally then revisit the steam deck with the v2 to see if there were any improvements or, if even possible, more regressions haha. Thank you for your input and insight. I'm also going to be getting some thermal putty just to see if there is a major difference one way pr the other with that.
