Fishing with Rod

9 жыл бұрын

Soft plastic baits are typically used for largemouth and smallmouth bass fishing, but they can also be used to catch big trout. In this video tutorial, we use a curly tail grub on a drop shot rig, targeting bull trout at lakes in British Columbia Canada.

Great video and technique. I am just about to start fishing again after many years, so back to being a beginner I suppose and I find your technique and style very helpful. I used to fish a little as a teenager with my uncle, but now I am starting again to accompany my son (14 years old). I am just in the process of choosing a rod and reel to get me started, that in it's own is a learning curve.

I’ve used this method for years now. This also works for rainbows and browns. I use 2” plastics flukes or minnows. With size 8 or 10 owner mosquito hooks. Mice tails work well also for this type of fishing. Sometimes I twitch and pause and I’ll get a strike when I do the pause. Great video…

First time across your channel. I've taught lots of trout fishing by " bottom drift fishing " same rig as drop shot but tag the worm on about 3 ft of 2-3lb leader, go up wind and cast out towards shore and let the wind drift you out across a small lake. You can tell when you're not dragging bottom when you get no tip action. Let out a bit more line till you do. The lots of fun with lots of line out! Nice channel Rod!

Hey Rod, Been doing this for years except not moving the bait; just still fishing. Also consider to use Matzou circle hooks. When they take it, 98% of the time (in my experience) the fish hooks itself and makes release so much less harmful. Fish On!

Awesome! On a side note is there anywhere good to catch bull trout from shore around either Hope or Kamloops? I am taking a trip to go sturgeon fishing in august on the fraser river around hope and was hoping to do some fishing on the trip back. Thanks
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 7 жыл бұрын
Skagit River and Ross Lake which is featured in this video are good bets for bull trout in August. Everywhere else is kind of the wrong season for it. Thompson River will have good rainbow trout fishing. Kamloops Lake has both bull trout and rainbow trout, but the fishing is usually better later on in the fall.

Colours and sizes should match the preys of course, but they are more often to attract fishermen than fish. Trout are generally aggressive opportunists, which would attack anything that is actively moving.

hello fishing with rod. i hope that you can answer my question but for dropshotting for trout what weight would you recommend? i usually fish from the shore and want to cast as far as i can to cover as much water as possible for trout
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 5 жыл бұрын
If you are fishing from shore, I'd say you are better of fishing with a spoon or spinner, or float fishing with bait rather than dropshot. Dropshotting works better from a boat where you have direct access to deeper water right away.

It seems like drop shorting is mostly done on a boat. Can drop shot be effective on shore as well? Or does the presentation of the rig lose its attraction due to the shoreline getting shallower during the retrieve?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 4 жыл бұрын
That's correct. Dropshotting is typically done from a boat where you have direct access to deeper water, but if you find fish in shallower water where it is snag-free, it would work well too.

Hi Rod I've been fishing for trout at my local pond recently and I've had troubles with setting my drag properly for these little fish. I can set the drag to where they will pull line when they take my lure but when I go to set to the hook my reel doesn't stay in one spot to properly to give that pull. My reel just gives out line instead of this. The only thing I could think of is setting that drag just tight enough to make a firm hook set then let off on the drag when the fish is on. Could you help me please?

nice catch rod! do you prefer the dropshot rig or the three-way-swivel rig? does tying the hook directly onto the leader weaken the setup? seems like fish can bite the the jig together with the leader, causing potential miss, what do you think? and what size sinker do you use, and does it spook the timid trout if sinker size is too big? thats a lot of questions, sry and tks :))
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
+jingqk With the technique being used in this video, the drop shot rig is definitely preferred. I'm not too concerned about the fish biting the line, because that can happen with any other rig really. The weight size is perhaps half an ounce, so it is quite small and makes very little disturbance on the bottom when it is being dragged.

@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Roseanne, I'm sure it could work but there are definitely better ways to catch chinook and coho salmon. For coho salmon, casting and retrieving a spoon or spinner, twitching a jig work really well. For both species, float fishing with bait like salmon roe works very well too.

Nice video Rod. Im going to try drop shotting for trout. What kind of hook do you use and size? I seen a couple other youtube channels and the guys use some hook called a 2x fine wire hook and i was wondering if you use the same hook? Or a different type of hook? Thank you for the video.
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 жыл бұрын
The hook size and type really depends on the species you are targeting as well as their size. Bull trout, the ones being targeted in this video have a much larger mouth compared to other trout species (rainbow and cutthroat trout), so I tend to be more comfortable with using a bigger hook for these. I use a Owner SSW hook, which is a pretty standard hook used for salmonids but not necessarily for dropshotting. I use a 1/0 for these bull trout, but for rainbow and cutthroat trout I'd go smaller.

if I use ultralight rod, do I need net in case I caught big fish??

Yes absolutely. :) A catch and release net would reduce the amount of fighting time significantly and help you land the fish more easily. If you need to release the fish, it'd improve its survival rate.

HI Rod, what are the best colors to use for big trout in a big river? Tia! Jennifer
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer, it really depends on what species of trout you are catching, what the fish are commonly feeding on in that river, and environmental factors like water clarity etc. If you are using a spoon or spinner, silver, copper, nickel, with colours like orange, green, blue, all work. Natural colours like olive, dark brown, green, etc which imitate leeches and other aquatic invertebrates when using soft plastics work well. Again, there aren't best colours that will always product well, but I'd adjust based on the factors mentioned above. Good luck!

No extra fast is too stiff for salmon and trout. Slow to moderate is generally what you want to look for.

Would this method be good for lafarge lake? I'm a beginner fisher and was thinking of the cast and retrieve method. To me, cast and retrieve and drop shot seem very similar, just the difference in where the positioning of the weight is..?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
+munchnompaku The fish in Lafarge Lake are stocked catchable rainbow trout which are usually 10 to 12 inches long, so if you downsize your presentation (smaller grub, size 4 hook), then you should be able to catch them with this setup too.

If I'm fishing in an estuary for Sea trout and Salmon would this work? and if it's weedy and rocky on the bottom should I us something else like a float instead of a weight and if so would this technique work?:) Thank you ^.^
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
+Conal Cassidy By rigging the curly tail grub on a drop shot rig when fishing in a lake, it resembles a leech or sculpin that's struggling to swim near the bottom. This is what trout look for in a lake. Salmon in the estuary, are usually feeding heavily on baitfish before rushing into the river and carrying out spawning, you are better off using a spoon or something that imitates these baitfish and retrieve it at a pretty fast pace for them to chase it down. Sea trout in the estuary also feed in similar patterns.

Hey Rod! great videos. - drop shot vs carolina rig for trout? your thoughts?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Oscar, it really depends on what youa re using. A carolina rig is what we often used for trout when using natural bait (dew worms, shrimp etc), or an artificial fly. It however isn't fished the way we'd fish for bass. Usually it's just cast out from shore and left stationary, or dropped vertically straight down from a boat.

Great video, do you have any links to recommended cheap setups for rod and reel for trout?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
+jasonkeem For trout rod and reel setup, I usually like to go with a rod that's rated 2 to 6lb and can cast lures up to 1/4oz. If I am spincasting lures, then I like my rod length to be around 6ft long. If I am float fishing, then I like it to be at least 9ft long. For reels, a Shimano size 1000 spinning reel is best. The one used in this video, Stradic CI4+ 1000FA is more of a higher end model, but a Shimano Sahara 1000 is also very nice and retails around 80 to 100 dollars.

I have a 6"6 ultralight Shakespeare catch more fish rod trout with a Abu Garcia Cardinal sx and I have 6 pound line on it. The biggest trout iv caught was a 2 pound bull trout. Do you think my rod could handle a 4-6 pound trout? Thanks
@slowmoproify

The rod is rated 1-4 pounds
@al.trzy_blu.e
@al.trzy_blu.e 8 жыл бұрын
if you play the fish, loosen the drag and let it swim and get tired, you can catch 10lbers on it... no problem, just gotta be patient... the 1-4lb rating is for line test, so 4lb line is the max test line, if you go above that line rating and you hook a monster you will break the tip off your rod, 4lb is the max line strength to get full bend on the rod without it breaking...

Notice that both the fish caught in this video were while you stopped to talk. Fish hit those soft plastics on the fall! That's an important thing to note with those kinds of baits.

when fishing for trout how important is the test strength of the line
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
+ccb80 The line you use should be appropriate for the size of the fish you are targeting of course. I generally stick to 4 or 6lb test. Most of the trout I'm fishing for are no bigger than that size range.
@ccb80
@ccb80 9 жыл бұрын
I'm not positive on the size fish but I have 14lbs test on my rod wondering if I have to change or if I can sneak by with that
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 9 жыл бұрын
+ccb80 14lb test is quite heavy, I don't even use it for salmon fishing. If you are casting and retrieving like what is being done in this video, you'll find it difficult to cast with a heavy thick line. Again, unless you're catching fish bigger than 10lb, I'd suggest you go with something much lighter.
@ccb80
@ccb80 9 жыл бұрын
what does the weight effect exactly?
@herkusr01
@herkusr01 8 жыл бұрын
The weight of the line makes it harder to cast lighter lures, and fish can "see" it better, and you will get less bites with heavy line as opposed to 2-6 pound test
@truehardshuffle
@truehardshuffle 7 жыл бұрын

Fishing with Rod thank you so much, could I bother you with 1 more question? what size and kind of hook are you using? and was that a 3 inch grub? or 2?
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 7 жыл бұрын
That's two more questions! You can bother me as many as you'd like lol. ;) I use a size 1/0 hook in this video as the bull trout we are targeting are 3lb or larger. The grub was 2 inch I believe.
@truehardshuffle
@truehardshuffle 7 жыл бұрын
Dang, a 1/0 for trout, never hear of that before, the biggest I've ever used was a size 2 and even then I thought it was big. Was it a plain shank or offset? And 2 inch sounds good, I'll stick to that
@FishingwithRod
@FishingwithRod 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, 1/0 because the target species is bull trout, which are much bigger than rainbow trout and have bigger mouths. If you are targeting rainbows etc, then smaller hooks are recommended. I just use Owner SSW all purpose bait hooks.
