Drowsy Maggie is a widely played Irish reel, particularly among beginners, but it has a tricky bow crossing section at the start. In this Irish fiddle lesson I show the basic melody, then examine four different bowing strategies for the bow-crossing section. I also look at some cuts, double cuts, trebles and rolls to ornament the tune. A free pdf of the sheet music for Drowsy Maggie is available to subscribers. There are plenty more Irish fiddle tunes on The Fiddle Channel.

Love the variations. I always thought figure of 8 was the 'only' way. Thanks for pointing out the alternative version.

Thank you so much Chris for sharing your knowledge. I am Italian, my English is not very good, but you explain very, very well your really very interesting video sessions. I love the Irish fiddle, I started playing three years ago and I never want to stop doing it.

Thanks so much . I love this lesson on “Drowsy Maggie “ . How do you get that background music to play along with . I’m a beginner and this may be the way to help me play with others in a group .

Hi Margaret. Glad you enjoyed this! I make my backing tracks on software called Band in a Box, and they're all available on my Patreon. A cheaper option is to use Strum Machine.

Love the channel and the video. Have you thought about covering Anne Lacey's? It has a lot of similar ornamentation

As far as I remember there wasn't any sheet music to go with the "Beginning Irish Fiddle" video. Or were you referring to Drowsy Maggie?

Looking for somebody to explain the bowing for the first couple of bars of this, I found you. I've had a violin since the 70s, but I can't play it ( obviously, ). I have a copy of the M Cranitch book, and he gives your version 4. I am trying to get my head around it, and i can't stand the way playing it by hand ( I mean in guitar position ) doesn't help for learning the bowing version ............... But playing it by hand, where I can get a great groove going without thinking about it, gave me an idea : - You say you like your version 3 because you want an accent on the B. If you are playing with a combo, that's all well and good. If you are playing the tune solo, you don't want the accent on the B, I think it's fair to say ............................... ? P.S. There is a recent upload of a Charlie McCoy harmonica tutor, in which he says a couple of times " OK, that's the correct way to do it, now here's the way I do it ! " If only you were on Desolation Row you'd be as cool as him !"£$%^&*()_++_)(*&^%$"!

Glad you found this interesting. As you've gathered, there's no "correct" way to bow a reel. Ideally you'll be alert to all the possibilities, and make your decisions phrase by phrase depending on how you're feeling, who you're playing to and who you're playing with.

@@TheFiddleChannel I still have feelings, but alas the days of the second and third on the list are well over. I fancy my violin CV sets me slightly apart from your average viewer : - In Jan '74 I already had a sitar, but I didn't know there was a tradition of violin playing in Indian classical music till I saw Mrs. Rudrani Balakrishnan in London. Soon after that I put a couple of postcards in shop windows " Violin wanted, any condition, must be cheap " . The first one was thirty bob, the second a quid ! So I've always had a violin, but would you believe not a particularly good one ? Now I find myself in possession of a violin with an acceptable sound, and the time has come - you never get nowhere if you're too hasty ..... P.S. If you want to see me ignoring the rules you could not do better than watch my vid of The Japanese Hornpipes, which includes out of tune samples, or my last two uploads, which are radio controlled cars playing gamelan music !
