That’s why there’s a cap in the back that you take off where you put the screwdriver in and adjust it with the drum on to tighten it to where you want it, because you won’t be able to put the drum back on if you get it where you want it , I’ve never seen anybody pull the drum off to adjust it that way to make it right

These cars have problems with self adjustment as you reverse. So they end up relying on the front disc which then wear to fast.

You can adjust them next time without taking the wheel off. There's a black rubber grommet behind the plate . You can remove it and get to the adjustment wheel.

Good maintenance procedure. I didn't see you lubricate the contact points where the shoes contact the backing plate. Use high temperature grease.

Question; I have the same Toyota Matrix with the same brake setup, and I too have very new brakes with a pulsating feel to them, its actually happened multiple times on different pair of drums. Did just adjusting them fix the issue for you?

Not really, I drove a few of them and that is how they are sometimes.
