Happy New Year! Is there a better way to start off the new year than with one some Neil Peart? I think not. Today we're going to be taking a look at one of the more requested videos on the channel and quite frankly, one that makes sense since there is a lot of Rush on the channel and I am a drummer. But yes, today we will be taking a look at Neil Peart's Frankfurt Drum Solo! Again, during editing and watching it through I was very disappointed in myself because there was so much that I didn’t mention but alas, we only have a limited amount of time so I only picked out the biggest points that jumped out at me during the reaction so I hope you enjoy! While I don't think that I've even seen this video even completely through, I have heard this solo, or rather a version of this solo before so I'm not going into it completely cold. None-the-less, I am very excited to bring this video to you in the reaction/analysis format!
For those of you that don't know, this video will be covering not just a reaction to what I'm watching but I'll be talking about the things that I really enjoy about what the featured artist is doing. This can range from how they have composed their music from player to player if it's a band, or the drummer himself; and what I think they're doing really well technically as well as musically! Of course, there's only so much that can be covered in a short KZfaq video so there are bound to be things that I've missed so bear with me! And now, time for the mandatory disclaimer!

This is going to be a reaction and analysis of the song meaning that I will be pausing the song a lot to give my thoughts, reactions and analysis so if you are here to just listen to the song with no meaningful feedback, this is not the video for you. Stay happy and healthy!

Not bad for a guy in his late 50's at the time. I saw Rush 3 times and his solos were always the highlight of the concert.

He was a drummer of drummers. A one man drum line. He combined a couple of different drumming. Different styles of music into one drum solo. How many drummers do the rest of us know who can do that. and pull it off with blending. RIP Neil.

I can't remember where I heard the interview, but I once heard Neil talk about his drum solos in terms of "narrative". He wanted to tell a musical story, which just completely blows my mind. What a genius. Maybe it speaks to his combination of percussionist and lyricist...and novelist, etc, etc, etc. Respect.

I really appreciate your review and your focus on how independently Neil was able to drive his legs one way and his hands another way...all in rhythm and all of that syncopated into an excellent drum solo.

@@JoshCastillo He's been criticized for NOT having limb independence, feel, or nuance. Those are all critics who haven't *really* listened to him and jumped to conclusions just due to his precision. I had never noticed the key on the Zylo triggering the one sound...which he is hitting when looking away...and he hits it consistently. AMAZING! The call and response in Rush compositions goes back *at least* as far back as LaVilla Strangiato

@@Mike80528 I really like that Rush employs a lot of musical techniques, it really helps keep everything fresh while keeping it Rush, if that makes any sense lol. I can't even begin to comprehend the critique of not having feel or nuance just because he's so precise. As a matter of fact, I really believe that his precision is something to be envied (in a good way of course).

Old drummer following a young drummer! Epic!! I used to do a lot of things, played trumpet through college, it paid for it, played drums in college, that was my bonus to stay in! Did head hunting work, did studio work, played live with some bigger groups back in the day. I appreciate your appreciation of a talented soul...RIP Neil

Neil's first musical introduction started out with piano lessons. But he found some "Chop" sticks and would drum on anything. His parents bought him a single tom/snare and said if he put his effort into it for his 14th Birthday they would buy him a "kit". He did, and they did. His hero/inspiration at the time was Buddy Rich. He played a number of "Buddy Rich" tribute shows and even put out 2 Buddy Rich Tribute albums.

It is ridiculous how fast his hands were at times during this solo...like mind blowing. If I had not seen him live in concert, I would have thought it was fake. But I saw him live. He was really that fast. We lost one of the best drummers in modern music when he died.

Actually, the drum solo at 14:46 in this video was more of a callback to one of his more iconic drum solos in the early-to-mid-'80s. Only difference is that, Peart is more refined at this concert vs the original drum solo he's referencing.

I remember reading that as well. I think it’s in Roadshow. My first thought after he passed was that he might be honored to have so many awesome reactions, but would probably have a different solo in his mind that he felt like he nailed. the hardest, most frustrating thing I've ever attempted is what you mentioned about Neil doing with his hi hat trigger during the fast syncopation once he turns to face his acoustic side. That tambo. sound that you hear on two and three was not a loop! For those who didnt realize. I've finally been able to master the approach 'in the pocket but listen how he manages to go far,FAR out of the pocket and maintain that 3/4 time...bass-hat-hat-bass.... Unbelievable!

Maybe straight line drumming isn’t the proper term, but Neil thought in 3 dimensions, and very well crafted his playing.

She is an 11 year old drummer from Japan just named to Drummer Worlds Top 500 drummers in the world - the youngest person ever to be so honored. She also did a cover of YYZ as an hommage to Mr. Peart. She covered Good Times Bad Times by Led Zeppelin at the age of 8 years old and Robert Plant said "Well I know where she can get a good job". I don't know but in my opinion he has way better solos than this one. Even some of his early solos from all the worlds a stage and exit stage left. When he was younger without the electronic drums. Don't get me wrong I love this but his early solos are awesome. Even the show of hands solo checkout some of them.

I hear you, This one is great mainly because of how it was captured visually, but he put the same amount of effort and talent into every solo he did. My personal favorite was the one during Vapor Trails

A couple of things: 1. Although the video said it was the 30th anniversary show, I'm pretty sure this is from the R40 tour, not the R30. Neil looked different in the R30 video and the solo was different. 2. The audio timing was slightly off of the video timing. You could hear the snare before you could see him hit it. 3. You cut off the ending before the big Gong hit.

The secret to sussing out which solo from which tour is by the drum set itself. You can also google it. The snare delay you may be hearing might be Neil triggering from a foot pedal or pad sample. As for the gong, Josh was just so overwhelmed and wanted to express the fact, that he just forgot it was there after the pause. And surely we need to acknowledge and give credit to the fact that he actually pronounced Neil's last name correctly. Oh, by the way, I was at both the R30 tour and the R40 tour. I was actually at that Frankfurt show. Small world, huh?

What I find is that nobody says anything about the fact that in all of his drumming solos he never hits the rims of any of the drums especially when he crosses over his hands at1520

That was his feet doing the boom chick chick , He mention in an interview on how he taught himself to play a different beats over top of that with his hands and in different beats per minutes over top of that

Yeah the “hands” are playing complex rhythms on their own. But he plays the 3/4 motive with his feet in an unrelated tempo -all at the same time. Together its insane but yet comes off as High Art.

@@squamishfish Yes, its very difficult to have your brain running two unrelated clocks at the same time. I remember reading that he was working on the next step in the process -where you separate one foot from the other. Probably having it run with the hands.

It's a quote from a jazz piece called "the Drum Also Waltzes" by Max Roach. Any time you can get that kind of independence, it's impressive. Another great example is "Never Going Back Again" by Fleetwood Mac, where Lindsey Buckingham's picking hand is playing 2/4 on the bass strings and 3/4 in the higher strings. I can do the simplest of polyrhythms on my two hands, but forget trying to do crazy stuff with my pedals, or within a single hand like the Buckingham example. My brain just can't handle it, at least not yet.

Josh, you cut off the video again before the end! I mentioned this on Xanadu as well. You miss out on the climatic endings and it’s actually disrespectful to the artists. Are you doing these reactions to show off your knowledge or in the spirit of celebrating the performances?!? I’m a RUSH fan since seeing them opening for KISS concerts and from the very first album. I’m not sure I watch another reaction like that again!!!

You are entitled to your opinion just as I am entitled to mine. For clarification. I said that I had heard a version of this solo before but not this exact solo. This is also not the first solo/performance of Neil's that I've ever seen. Obviously, I've seen others so if you're referring to the fact that I said that "I've seen this before," I was talking about how he switches drum sets. It's kind of a signature of his. Also, even if I had seen it before, I wasn't aware that there was a rule book that people who make 'reaction videos' had to follow. And if that book does exist, I wasn't aware that the rule was that in order to react, you have to have never seen or even heard about said video ever in your life. Either way, this is my style of reaction video which is pretty basic. Watch a video (often haven't seen or heard it before) and react to it with the intention to analyze. Obviously, this is not something which I do in everyday listening and watching so in essence, yes I am reacting to technical and musical ideas and decisions. But again, like I said before, you're entitled to your opinion and preferences as am I. I just wanted to clarify myself. Cheers to you and have a great day

Critique is a word you used, not me. I don’t consider my videos critiques, I consider them celebrations because I talk about all the great things that these musicians do and try to convey that to anyone interested.

Not trying to be an ass or anything, but, imo, Bonham was not as good as everybody hypes him up to be. Neil’s way better than him, imo. But, again this is just my opinion.
