I don't know if you go back an listen to this song ever, but if you haven't, I'd encourage you to back and listen to the fill right after the heavy bit with the kick drums. You were talking and reacting to that when Gavin played one of the tastiest fills in the whole performance, going counter-clockwise up the kit, starting on the little China and up the rack toms. Such a sweet fill.

As with all of Buddy's playing, this solo is great. But, I don't know why it was labeled "impossible", when so many other performances are available today online. What's most remarkable about this one is that it was extremely hot at the performance, and Buddy nearly had a (another) heart attack, by the time he got backstage... and yet he still gave it 110%, which was his trademark. I sat in front of this man and his band many nights from 1968 until his passing, and EVERY ONE was "impossible". Check out (on KZfaq) the "Buddy Rich live at the 1982 Montreal Jazz Festival", "Buddy Rich live at the Hague", and "Buddy Rich live in Cologne", for just a few examples. :)

Danny to me is actually a Lead Drummer if you know what I mean. He is the core of their music just like the one and only the late great Neil Peart of Rush. Neil was the lyrist in Rush.

Buddy is the best no question. But this guy was hard to listen to because he kept saying “drum set player”. It’s just drummer, dude. 🤦🏼♂️
@JoshCastilloАй бұрын
Like I’ve said in the past. In all the musical circles that I’ve been in (including actually pursuing a music education degree), “drummer” has always been derogatory.
@terrychristian9580Ай бұрын
@@JoshCastillo I guess we’ve traveled in different circles. Been listening to and playing rock for 50 years, and drummer is the term used 99.9% of the times. Curious then … if drummer is considered derogatory, what is the preferred term? And why is drummer considered derogatory?
@JoshCastilloАй бұрын
@@terrychristian9580 drum set was the first percussive instrument that I ever played, but I came up classically trained. I, and even people in this comment section, who came up playing in symphony orchestras, jazz bands and marching bands strived to be percussionists (a lot of my drum set playing is jazz based). So when someone referred to us as drummers (meaning we could only play one drum I.e. skill-less vs. the wide range of percussive instruments to include mallet playing) they were likely saying it in a derogatory way, because it meant you weren’t a percussionist.
@terrychristian9580Ай бұрын
@@JoshCastillo I get what you’re saying from your perspective and I understand why. Again, we’ve traveled in different circles. In the rock music of the 70s/80s/90s that I play, it’s not as complicated so drummer is the go-to term. But referring back to the original post, I would admit that Buddy Rich was so much more than just a drummer. But the OP of that video kept referring to him as a “drum set player”, and that is a term over never heard in my life, so it was kind of annoying to me. 🤣
@JoshCastilloАй бұрын
@@terrychristian9580 I am the OP lol, that’s why I was explaining it. That’s just how we refer to different players playing different instruments, i.e. Bass player, mallet player, snare player etc. But I appreciate your candor nonetheless and agree that not everyone will come from the same circles. This one just happens to be mine.

Great analysis! Those volume swells Alex is doing with his feet is a lot harder than many people realize. It takes precise timing. If you dont do it right, it sounds terrible. He does this in many songs and as an axe man I'll tell you they are harder than they look.

I come back to your reaction every few months to appreciate your succinct ear on the percussion of Neil, especially at the opening. No other reactor points out the different sounds that Neil uses. Unfortunately, toward the latter tours Neil did use sequencers to emulate many of the wonderful sounds that he formerly brought about manually. So thank you.
