Today I have a supercut of 3 tutorials from our premium Pro Mix Academy courses.
The first one features Matt Weiss of the Pro Audio Files and drummer Matt Starr. Matt walks you through several different overhead mic placement techniques and Matt Starr demonstrates what they sound like. For many genres the overheads capture a complete picture of the kit, and so mastery of this placement can be what makes your drums sound the best that they can.
Second, L.A. Session drummer, Blair Sinta, walks you through the mic setup he uses in his studio. Blair tracks a lot of sessions for many different artists from his home studio- I wanted you to see this clip as it directly applies to the situation many of you will find yourself in recording at home.
Lastly, Bob Horn and Erik Reichers walk us through their complete drum recording setup. They give us detailed insight into the microphones they are using and their full signal flow. What is great about this tutorial is that their entire kit is mic'd up with many affordable mics and the result sounds great! Additionally, they walk through all of the EQ and processing that they apply during the recording phase. I think committing to sounds on the way in is incredibly important, and Bob and Erik detail it in this video on recording drums.

HI Friends, I get asked so much about Drum recording! Here we have three different perspectives and three completely differing rooms! Blair Sinta has a tiny room and gets great results, very akin to a home studio. Erik Reichers and Bob Horn have their own purpose built world class studio and Matt Weiss has a great room he shares with Andrew Dawson. I learned a lot from all of these videos!! I hope you do too! Have a marvellous time recording drums! Many thanks Warren

Thanks mate, I’m actually moving into a new studio, and I just finished painting it, almost the exact same red that you have there. Although I did make a conscious choice, and studied mood, inspiration, etc. color charts, I went to Home Depot and found the “reject pile” where you can get 10 gallons of paint for about $15 as opposed to $80 or $120 depending on the quality. This was super nice paint and it looks as you might say marvelous. I built my own sound panels, and today’s project will be to build two diffusers. “ it’s fun having fun” my most famous quote that I tell my students Cheers 🥂

Nice 2-in-1 kick mic that you have.... condenser and dynamic in one unit. I just bought one that is kinda like that but a bit different. It is made just like any normal mic, but it has two condenser diaphragms which face away from each other. These do not split into 2 separate signals but blend and come out as one. One (main side) is stronger So their pickup patterns combined actually creates a type of “Figure 8” pickup pattern, which Simulates the pickup of a Ribbon mic. It’s why the refer to it as a “Ribbon Simulator.” The company is KAM Audio and the name of the mic is a *KAM 2-Face* (Ribbon Sim)

Some great tips in this video, just a couple of questions on the last section. Being a cardioid doesn't the back (180°) of a 57 being a cardioid actually pick up high frequencies (>3k) to a much greater degree than say 135°? Also wouldn't arbitrarily flipping polarity when micing from underneath (in this case a ride), only work if the microphones are the same distance apart? If we assume that the ride fundamental ≈ 300hz, and the OH's are 3ft further away than the bottom microphone, the fundamental will infant in out of phase. However, if the OH's are 1.5ft or 4.5ft further away than the bottom microphone the fundamental would infant be in phase. I don't mean this to sound like I am arguing against these techniques, simply if I am incorrect I am obviously misunderstanding something which I would appreciate if someone explain to me.

Copycat!.. ;) Or even cheaper / better, the DIY route. Didn't the Yamaha Subkick retail for a good few hundred, 2-300$ or so? I can't imagine spare NS10 woofers can be cheap nowadays either (and it's not like they have some uber-magical-pixie-mojo, when used in this manner)...

Ryan over at CreativeSoundLab did some experiments with a 12" guitar speaker, on its own *AND* mounted within a(n open-back) cab. I've been using this ancient sealed-box Hitachi two-way speaker, that was literally found in a dumpster :D Disconnected the crossover / tweeter, wired a male XLR straight to the woofer terminals, and job done. And as an added bonus, it can easily serve as a support for carpets to shield the kick mic from cymbal bleed.

Any reason for the 414 capsules being placed towards the walls and not the kit?
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Adam, which ones do you mean? The 414's in the video are on the overheads in Matt Weiss' studio and they pointed down to the snare. There are some Lewitt mics that are being used as room mics, maybe you mean those? Have a marvellous time recording drums! Many thanks Warren

I realize now that in the first example Matt was using a "front of kit" technique, for which the microphones were off axis to the snare! Didn't catch that before the demonstration. Makes sense!

Ummm could you explain what flipping the polarity does, and why you'd want to do it? I missed it, all 30 times ya went over it. After about the 4th time I was wishing I could flip the phase and get some noise cancellation on this video. haha Wait... what? cause their opposite? ohhhh shit I got it on the 31st explaination. lol

Those two crash cymbals sound way too much alike. As a drummer, I always find crashes that compliment each other because you can build more combos with each unique sound. 3 crashes gets you 3 solo sounds and then 3 additional combo sounds.

Absolutely! I agree, sometimes drummers have incredibly different sounding cymbals and it can really help, especially in genres where the drummer have a lot of room to breath! Have a marvellous time recording drums! Many thanks Warren

Agree 100% I typically like an 18” med crash (for riding during a chorus, or just a nice big crash sound), a 14” thin crash for tight grabs, texture, etc and of course a sweet 10” or 8” splash (or both) for those “special” moments. On a different subject, I really enjoy three rack toms and one floor tom, even though a lot of engineers try to talk me into using a 4 pc kit. I tune my 10“ drum to sound like a Timbale, the 12“ is kind of normal tom sound, the 13“ is a nice medium thud, and the floor Tom basically sounds like my bass drum, dead and explosive. I play/record/perform a wide variety of music and I find that this setup covers just about everything. Great video !!!! Thanks all 😎

Some drummers are not going to let you spin the snare, and you are going to have to mic it as is.

Sorry again, but i dont understand this collage. The first part is basically useless because we don't get to hear any sound. The second part is actually useful but I thought it was connected to the first and it's not. But what a weird way to start showing how to place overhead mics? Basically if a total amateur with little patience watches this, he's gonna end up having two room mics instead of overheads :) Third part is in principle good but the drums sound honestly very bad, I mean it. And icing on the cake is the great Matt Starr's angry face for doing the garzone part.
