Whenever you think of Bonham, you think big Ludwig drum kit with 14x6.5 snare, 26" bass drum and 14-16-18 toms. On this debut album he actually plays a conventional set - 14x5.25 snare, 22" bass drum, 13-16 toms. He sounds the same because it's his playing and not the equipment.

I love how the Zeppelin engineers left in all the little studio sounds in many of their songs. Really adds to the mood and ambiance of their songs.

The late sixties were a boom for the rebirth of blues, so many British musicians were influenced by the blues that so many bands played blues to begin with, Status Quo, Rory Gallagher, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Ten Years After, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Foghat and of course LZ and many more. The interesting thing is the added their own twist on songs written by the likes of Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, and so many more. Later they just added a bit more and it became hard rock and metal, but it is still blues as a base.

I remember reading something by John Paul Jones basically saying that it takes great chemistry with your band mates to play something great, slow. They definitely had that chemistry. Expect the unexpected from Zeppelin. Now prepare to be dazed and confused!

They had a chemistry that was unequaled , there were better guitar players there were better bass players individually but collectively they will never be surpassed. Rock on .

Such an incredible debut album from the band if you look at it in context of the music scene of the time. They certainly had their critics back then in the music industry but I guess history proved them wrong.

The main reason that an element of the press disliked LZ was because the band relied upon word of mouth and their music to spread their name, it wasn't until later in the evolution of the band that they became more press friendly. The band and their manager, Peter Grant, not only knew this but played on it, effectively they said "We made it without you, do your worst" and some of the music press tried really hard to pan, discredit and generally dis them - it didn't work, as history has shown. There's nothing the UK and US press love more than having an act that they can promote to the heavens, just to tear them down when they feel they've outgrown their breeches, LZ never gave the press that leverage.

@@Young_Jim You're welcome, it was common currency for the music press to cheerlead their favourites and pan the bands they disliked or had no part in the success of. Check out Rolling Stone magazine's piece about Bruce Springsteen & The E Street band, from around 1970, "I've seen the future of rock and roll . . . " then check out the relationship that the author had to that band (not mentioned anywhere in the magazine). It was a messy, vindictive and highly partisan world back then - mind you, I'm completely out of touch with current music and its press coverage (read,: "I'm ancient") and have no idea if it's any better now. Peace my friend.

One of my favorite memories in my whole life involves this song. In Fall 2014 I worked as a field guide at a nature reserve in southeastern Brazil, about 2 hours north of Rio de Janeiro. One day I was invited to join a pair of Brazilian professional photographers as they went around getting great nature shots of the landscapes in the area, with me "guiding" them but mostly just tagging along. They were very friendly and fun guys. In the afternoon when we were done I sat in the back seat of their car as we drove to a nearby town to get something to eat at a restaurant. During the drive they put on the CD for Led Zeppelin I, which I hadn't heard in many years, but was so great to hear and not at all what I was expecting or accustomed to hearing in Brazil. As we started looking for a particular restaurant, You Shook Me came on, and the guys really cranked up the volume. I was so loving it. There I was, thousands of miles from home having the time of my life in Brazil, chilling in the back seat looking at the neighborhoods and people on the streets, hanging out with two really cool photographer dudes, and of all things jamming to Led Zeppelin's You Shook Me at full volume. The moment was definitely not lost on me, for its complete and utter preciousness. Ever since, this song has had this new meaning for me, and I've come to love every single thing about this cut. Not the least of which, of course, is Bonham's just ripping drumming in the middle after laying down that filthy slow groove for several minutes. The harmonica, the coupled vocals and guitar, the bluesy keyboards, and just the wide open space that you feel within the song. So rare in the rock world!

Bonzo has an uncanny ability to land each stroke exactly where it will deliver maximum heaviosity. Plant is awesome on the harp. The Plant-Page call and response is legendary. This album has been waiting nearly 55 years for you to catch up with it. Not sure what took you so long, but better late than never. Don’t be surprised to hear blues here. Hard Rock wasn’t a thing yet. The Stones wee strictly a Blues cover band in the beginning. The hardest music (with the exception of Sabbath) was Blues Boogie. Listen to the Woodstock soundtrack for a representative sample of the era.

JB said he started at 14 six years of playing awesome. I’m guitar player but I love watching your reactions . The engineer Johns said this is probably is the best album . I agree . Your right they left in the artifacts , the mistakes , because Page was going for a feel . On side two I can’t quit you babe Page hits a wrong note in the solo but kept it in because he liked the sound of that take . Keep up the good work . Now you know how it feels to heat Zeppelin for the first time .

I first heard this album when I was 16. An older kid played it at a party on a state-of-the-art stereo with monstrous speakers. I sat motionless , speechless , mesmerized , by the glorious sonic assault of drums , vocals , and guitar. I had never heard anything so powerful. After the final song , How Many More Times , I asked if we could listen to it again....and we did. That was 45 years ago , and it still gives me chills up my spine. 🤘🎸🔥

I love the raw/real sound of this and other older records. For me, the mistakes, changes in tempo, etc all just make it better and actually help you feel it more than the “perfection” of today.

Hi Andrew. Great job editing this track. Looks to me like you nailed it! Still hard to believe these young lads found each other and recorded this masterpiece within a couple months of meeting. And as you stated, Bonham and Plant were only 20, and I believe JPJ was around 22 and Page 24. Kids! Four kids made history with this debut. Simply amazing! Looking forward to tomorrows reaction. True. Very true. Although I go past Kenley airfield in Surrey often and see the memorials to killed Spitfire and Hurricane pilots in the Battle of Britain. I read 18, 19 years of age etc. I guess people grew up fast back then. 👍

Good morning from New England..When I was first learning how to play I practiced my fills just as Andrew was explaining..It took many many attempts and huge frustration levels before I learned what fills are appropriate when playing this slow...It also drilled into my head without the use of a metronome how to play a blues shuffle this slow....Thx Andrew...🤘✌️

You're comment about playing slow can be just as difficult as playing fast is spot on. Jason Bonham was once asked which LZ song he feared playing most and his response was When The Levee Breaks because of its slow, repetitive groove.

Am probably the only girl with a crush on Bonzo, not sure whether it's because he made drumming sound so sexy or whether his drumming made *him* sexier. Hey Andrew -- non drummer here, but music lover absolutely, and enjoy your analyses. I'm an old white guy who was there. And you were correct with your comment about being there when the album first came out. I had my prized Bang & Olufsen stereo in my dorm room. Room mate and I had the whole floor of the dorm packed in and laid waste with this freshly bought album (And LZ II, Dark Side of the Moon, etc.). Because there were no breaks until you flipped the record over, everyone just sat on everything in the room and just chilled. Four times through!!! Great memory, great band (GOAT), and great reaction. Thanks for going there!! (And with the other songs, too!)

If memory serves me correctly, Bonzo was playing a Slingerland kit with a 22" kick and 13" and 16" toms both on this album and their earliest tour(s). So he hadn't even gotten "the big drums" yet....but he sure got that big sound right away!

Hard to believe they were only together about 2 months here, & recorded mixed & edited this whole album, in about 36 hours. This song shows how great each of them are, & together how mind blowing.cover or not, they made this song & others amazing. Jimmy Page did the Producing mixing & editing, he loved leaving in the imperfections, it made them sound real. He is a master at creating the sounds he wants, they had complete control over their music, that was a must with their contract with Atlantic Records.

Yes it was Robert on the harmonica.... What a lot of people forget is that the blues singers of that era all played the harmonica... and of course Robert was no exception. but he played it like he sang... wich of course is sublime. And the call and response thing became a thing with that group... And yes, that little plectrum click became a thing when you heard the album and the track for ever more.. You are so right about the ethos being very different back then, The take was flawless apart from that so fine let's leave it in. And because Jimmy Page was such an acomplished session muscian, like John Paul Jones was, Jimmy never did anyhting that wasn't intentional. It's why he has a producer credit on all the albums.. Keep on rocking and letting me re-live my youth

If you want to listen to all the members even before LZ I you should check out the album “Three Week Hero “by PJ. Proby. That was recorded in August and September ‘68 with all four filling in as a studio band for him. Nowadays it’s actually only famous for featuring Led Zeppelin. 😅 Robert’s on backing vocals and harnonica, Jimmy’s on guitars, Bonzo plays percussion and drums, and John Paul Jones arranged it and played keyboards and bass guitar. Another early (demo) recording - and the reason for Jimmy Page to recruit Robert Plant - is “Hey Joe” (recorded late 1967 - early 1968) by the Band Of Joy with Bonham on the drums. The earliest live recording, alas quite poor quality, is from 30 Dec 1968 @ Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA, USA. That’s worth a check out. They mostly played Yardbirds songs with blues songs.

I am 66 and guess what I did in 1969 . This album still sounds so fresh , powerful and original. Joe Bonamasa says that he is sure Page left " mistakes " in recordings just to make it harder for him to copy the master 💚

The British Invasion was entirely about bands wearing their influences on their sleeves. Not sure how you could be hearing this for the first time. This may be the most famous (if not the best) debut album of that time period! Credit Jimmy Page for the sound on this record. As a session veteran, he knew a thing or two about mic placement (more than the sound engineers did, as a matter of fact).

It's kind of funny you did this one. When I first started playing drums I had a teacher and he pulled this one out after a year or so of playing. A lot of fun to play and a real lesson in `holding down the fort` while also adding some nice little dynamics and fills along the way. 9:34 wasn't scored though. It just said "improv." 😊

Great comment about it being ART Andrew... like leaving some of the jagged brushstrokes in and not smoothing them out, it creates tension and it then after a while becomes the thing you look forward to most in relistening to the song

I love Plant's harmonica playing and wish they had done more songs with him playing harp! But in talking with musicians who cover some Zeppelin songs it seems they don't cover the songs with harp in them, like say When The Levee Breaks, because they don't have a harp player in the band. It dawned on me that that might be why Plant and the band didn't create more songs with Plant playing harp, because they couldn't perform them live. Plant can't both sing and play harp at the same time in a live performance. I guess there's something to be said for cloning, you can be in two places at the same time.

The first LZ album did contain (if I remember correctly) two covers of great blues classics by "Wee Willy" Dixon - a veritable mountain of a man with a deep, deep voice who's a true blues legend. And the version of his that I have on CD (from the 1970 "I am the Blues" album) is indeed every bit as blues-y as what you heard on this album...

i have also paused just checked there 1969 this album come out listening to this i thought i wonder if theres been a bit of inspiration from the doors album la woman but i think that was released after Morrison died in 1971 so maybe the doors taken there inspiration from led zep if anyone likes a bit of blues then THE DOORS LA WOMAN album is a good shout

I had the wonderful opportunity to see them twice in my youth. Berkeley and LA. Brings back fond memories. Have all their albums.

I saw them at The Forum in LA...incredible. They came on at the stroke of 8 o'clock and they rocked hard for 3 hours if I remember correctly. Many times flowing right into the next song...with their rhythms it was almost as if the record needle had skipped into the next tune.

@Tom Haggard hey. Yes that's exactly what they would do. Nonstop. Incredible artistic abilities. When i first saw them at Berkeley it was Berkeley .Community Theater, Berkeley, CA - September 13th, 1971 maybe 3400 people if that. Up close and personal. I still listen to their stuff.

I love the tempo change on this. Modern rockers that have tried to cover this lose the tempo variations on it and it ruins the song. It should go from 40 up to 75.

Jimmy Page consciously left various ‘mistakes’ and ‘glitches’ in the albums (one song famously has an airplane passing over the studio) precisely because he waned the album to have the feel of a live performance. Similarly, most songs were recorded live in the studio, with many tracks being laid down in one or two takes. ‘Stairway’ was recorded in two takes. The first apparently was great, and band members thought that was it, but Jimmy wanted a bit more (energy?) out of Bonham. This, naturally, pissed John off. They went back and did a second take, with Bonham attacking the drums, giving us the legendary version we have now. [as best I can remember this story]
