Huge difference between sampling and doing a cover. None of Zep's covers sound remotely like the originals, and Zeppelin plays all the instruments. Page makes them all his own, as Hendrix did with Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. In terms of the instruments here, the first solo is JPJ on the organ, the second is Plant on harmonica, and the third is Page on his Telecaster through a small Supro amp. Something to keep in mind here. At the time of this recording, Robert Plant and John Bonham were only nineteen freaking years old. Plant was already that good on harmonica, and that ballsy and developed as a singer, at only nineteen. Bonham was already the most influential monster in the history of rock drumming. Unreal.

Just wait until you get to “Since I’ve Been Loving You” live at MSG. Initially a blues based rock band, they’ve got their share of blues but they evolved from blues covers to various genres of international influences you will not be able to pinpoint.

It goes from John Paul Jones playing the organ to Robert Plant playing the harmonica to Jimmy Page playing guitar. After Robert Plants says "All Right' at the end of the harmonica part, the next sound is Jimmy Page coming in on guitar. I don't know how you can't tell the difference between the sounds.

I want to flag something you said because it hit me right between the eyes you said that young people today really don’t care about instruments, or instrumental solos. What that says to me is that young people don’t appreciate the talent or skills of musicians any longer. That also rings true in the sense that people think today that music should be free. You get what you pay for. Record companies will no longer pay to develop the talents of new artists. They just pay tens of millions for older artists catalogues. This makes me incredibly sad. One of the first things that humans did, and it is a uniquely human thing, was to create instruments to make sound. It is part of our human DNA. Live music has been with us for thousands of years, and now, we have a generation who doesn’t care about about all the beautiful sounds that skilled and dedicated musicians can create. Music was a touchstone of my generation. If was an important part of the tapestry of our youth, woven all through the youth culture. To have it discarded and dismissed as not being of value just depresses the hell out of me.

The play between Plant’s voice and Page’s guitar is amazing and done perfectly in my favorite Dazed and Confused. I’ve been listening to Zepp my entire life and you make me look at something different each time.

This was Led Zeppelin introducing themselves to the world as 4 musicians. Bonham keeping the beat Page with his incredible playing and innovative riffs, Jones, playing multiple instruments, bass, organ and others, and Plant using his voice as an instrument to match along with playing the harmonica. Listen to it again they blended the Organ into the Harmonica and then into Jimmy’s guitar seamlessly

Love when Plant's voice and Page's guitar sing a duo together.

The lyrics about birds is from a very old song Corrina Corrina which was popular in the 50's but probably much older. "I've got a bird that whistles I've got a bird that sings but I ain't got Corrina life don't mean a thing" They may take from old songs but what they make from them is always on an EPIC level!!

That A note that Jimmy hits at the end of the call and response might be the heaviest note every played lol. I'm talking black hole density heavy!

It was a harmonica but they very subtly transitioned to guitar. Just amazing. I have to say that I think Robert Plant still manages to use his voice really really well considering his post 70 age. His recent performances with Allison Krauss demonstrate that. Certainly over time he lost some range but he found other ways to make up for it. He was the only Zepplin member to be very successful as a solo artist and he keeps creating really interesting music, using his voice skillfully. And he still sounds sexy, which is amazing.

IMO, perhaps you seemed to come into Rock reactions “swinging” with the sample tracks statement? It’s one thing to put together a cool thing with LEGO’S, it’s a whole other thing to invent them. 😉 Great reaction and song choice!

I read somewhere that drummers normally follow bass players but in LZ Bonham was instructed by Page to follow him. Bonham may have been reluctant to do that at first as their manager Peter Grant told him to do what Page said or get out of the band (though he said it in ruder terms). This must have been early days. Page and Bonham seemed to get on well after that. Led Zeppelin liked to get creative in their music which is one reason why they weren't keen to make singles records.

Robert is great on the Harmonica, then Jimmy comes in with the guitar solo, after of course, JP jones rips the keys first. All 3 took turns soloing.

I noticed you edited your opening. During the middle, they transitioned from organ, to harmonica, to guitar with a bit of drum thunder at the end. Each had a part to play and the ability to mesh their individual talents with each other regardless of instrument is the alchemy that Led Zeppelin was about. Their musicality, feel, rhythm, groove, timing, etc. were second to none.

Plant plays the harmomica, apparently. I googled it and that's what came up. I thought maybe they'd brought Paul Butterfield of the Butterfield Blues Band. You must listen to them. They did an incredible 11 minute jam entitled "East-West" in 1966, from the album of the same name. Legendary, and seminal.

I bought this album in early 1970 and took it into my grammar school's 6th form common room - we played it for weeks on end along with all the other good shit that was around at that time (Cream, Hendrix, Santana, etc.) kids today don't know what they're missing.

I was born in the 60s West Coast Bay Area and YOU, my friend, are TAPPING into that Vibe. Magical Time !

Another really fun reaction to an incredible song. And yeah that was a harp with an echo and then it kind of got overlapped and transitioned into a guitar with an echo. And did you notice that just about all of the solo work mimicked not only each other, but also a bird both whistling and then sometimes singing? Amazing. But I've heard you say this in at least four different reactions now, just keep in mind there are a lot of us out there, and believe me I'm an adequate singer but I've been able to record with incredibly gifted singers both in the studio and live and from my viewpoint, his voice and singing ability just got better and better every year. Of course it all ended too soon but you have to consider that his voice may have been changing just slightly like he may have lost like a half of a step or maybe a whole step Max over several years from the top of his range and that's it. What was changing more importantly was what he was choosing to do. It just got better and better and better. Check out the character that it has that's a bit more mature and a lot richer and in my view much better, even though I did not think so and I was young, but now I've felt this way for years, that last album, in through the outdoor, I kind of downplayed it when I was really young, cuz I thought it was just not quite as hard rocking. But now that I've had a long time and a lot more experience, it is a total masterpiece. Every level it's a masterpiece. But he's singing is definitely a part of that for sure.

Many interviews from the band say that John Paul Jones and John Bonham play off each other more than the others. You will also see Page and plant play off each other. You will see this clearly when you watch live performances. Do yourself a huge favor and watch the entire 1973 MSG concert then later watch the entire O2 Arena concert from 2017. Also, keep in mind that in 20q7 concert, they had not played together for about 30 years.

That sound was Jimmy's Gibson with a slide strapped on it ,.the tuning & sound Jimmy could produce from his gats is serious art in itself he was best hands down .

There’s synchronicity between Page & Plant you’re overlooking, that’s how blues should be sung, with depth & palpable emotion! That’s why they’re called the blues, but today maybe micro aggressions 😂 that’s my story & I’m sticking to it!

The blues were made for Zeppelin, and Zeppelin for the blues.

That was not a harmonica during the guitar solo. That was Jimmy Page belting out one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded in the studio. Also I wanted to recommend the entire 26 minutes of Dazed and Confused from the Madison Square Garden concert. Must be viewed in it's entirety to catch the explosive guitar soloing towards the end. Prepare to be mind blown ! Hope you review it.

There was a harmonica solo, but then a double tracked Page solo on a Tele with tons of echo and a wah pedal cocked in treble position to make that really sharp tone. Page uses the wah pedal a lot - not just to make a “wah wah” sound - but also to affect the tone

You should check out My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. It is a studio album by Brian Eno and David Byrne, released in February 1981. One of the first examples of sampling.

Plus Page and Plant playing together with each other.

Really psychedelic and heavy take on the blues - a little bit Hendrix like. Compare this version to Jeff Beck’s version on Truth. Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart are awesome, but they play it straight. Zep’s version is drenched in echo and the heavy drums and Plant’s voice create the uniquely Zep vibe. Also, check out the live version on April 27 at Fillmore West on KZfaq. The only word to describe it is “filthy”. Thanks!
