Something you didn't elaborate much on, is just how completely "deaf" you actually are and how disorienting it is without monitors in a space that big. The PA will be set up as an array, so almost none of that sound will make it to you behind the drums. What you hear is a bunch of distant echos, each of which is trying to completely destroy your sense of time. You're hearing notes you and the band played like 1/3 of a second ago. If your phone has ever done that thing where it glitches out and echos your own voice back at you with a delay while you're trying to talk, it's sort of like that.

Yeah, makes me think of the speech-jamming gun! A device that plays back your voice with a 0.2 second delay while you speak. Apparently, it's impossible to keep talking normally. Yeah, sound can really get weird in different places. Even confusing your sense of pitch.

I know they can play their whole repertoire without click, but as said in other comments, they need it (backtracks). Play a decent size gig with no amp and no monitor, and you'll begin to feel the real problem. Then, drum in a huge festival in the same conditions and you'll get it for sure. Uneducated comments on the facebook metal injection posts are off the freaking charts.

For anyone confused on why he “needs” a click, its synced up to backing tracks (synths, auxiliary percussion, etc) and their light show. I have been in bands with a similar setup and you absolutely need a click to make sure the band, the tracks and the lights all function together. Also check out Clays performance of “YAS” by Polyphia

Yes Charlie. I tried to break it down a bit at the end. I probably didn't do a good job. If the gig requires click... IT REQUIRES CLICK. It's kind of as simple

i think It was not a headphone trouble, but radio-frequency issue, or in-ear monitor rack unit just died. Tech's in-ear monitor mix may be so completely different to Clays, have different cue's, so swap body packs apparently wasnt an option. Tech's mix always include click tracks in case of either band lost count of clicks or something happens to playback so tech can turn off click/playback and band can finish a song.

IEM are really helpful technology for musicians and backing tracks is totally fine for a live show, specially on this band with such a high level of execution, I mean they're doing math-rock, and if you don't have the right tools to be so precise and in sync when playing then you're screwed. When I see this i remember BabyMetal IEM audio in some of their songs like Rondo Of Nightmare, it gives a clear picture of how hard is this song to keep up without this helpful tool. Btw Polyphia guitarists, Tim Henson and Scott LePage, got a song collaboration with BabyMetal called "Brand New Day" so if you want to check that out for a reaction you're very much welcome back, there's a live compilation safe to react just in case.

Played an outdoor show one evening at a small scale festival & there were monitors there but I couldn't hear anything out of them; became a matter of establishing a tempo for each song and keeping it while straining to hear the rest of the band. Thought it was rubbish on the night but the bass player's dad videotaped the show and it sounded good after all. It goes to show sometimes, anything can happen & it's how one can push through such difficulties that can make or break. The situation here sounds a lot more difficult than my thing back in '96, at least I could just hear everyone else.

I might just be the bass player but as a fellow rythym section member this is why I hate playing to a metronome live. Kills your ability to feel time. Just stay in the drummers pocket and we're all good in the hood. On a side note I'm learning rudiments from you and Steven Taylor to solidfy my rythym and I think all musicians should dip their toes in learning some basic drums. Really fun and super helpful. Thanks for the content.

@@mr.b.malarky9219 i agree with you, as a bass player. there's time for rehearsals, when band learn, how everyone feels, so everyone know how to play, because...? drummer is your metronome onstage. or even conductor, as Andy said. i remember, when my fellow drummer, played intro for some piece in 4/4 in 31/32 :D no one even noticed it, before recording of EP :D after 4 years of playing this piece flawlessly, when i was writing it in Guitar Pro, then i was realized, that it was 31/32 :D who the hell can play 16 bars in this timing?! :D

So here's what I don't understand: Drummer is using inears because he's playing to a clicktrack/sequence. His drumtech receives (almost) the exact same mix in his own inears to focus his attention on the drum sound in case anything goes wrong. If he is able to tap the tempo on the drummer's leg, it is because he can hear the click in his own inears. So why not plug the drummers inears in his (the tech's) pack directly?

various possibilities for cues. like... ehh... IE is dead, but the laptop isnt. once you´ve seen it couple of times, you can tell the transients by looking. its precise as hell, even doubly so if there is a miditrack that serves as a referencepoint next to the audio cue.

My guess for the drummer not having in ears and the techy having it is the receiver pack or in ear monitors/ desk was the problem rather than the signal chain into the in ear monitors. Still mad to play with someone tapping your leg like that, especially when it's really technical music like Polyphia.

@AndrewRooneyDrums You talk about not having that "click" as you call it and say that without that "It doesn't matter how good your time is, you're not going to play a 30 minute show." John Bonham played 30 minute songs. I am sure he and so many others played shows for several hours without any sort of monitor back in the day and look how good they were

The Soundbrenner Metronome can also be applied to the leg, not only your wrist. Overall interesting add on in your Routine of Clickwork and at least worth a try. Especially of the different feel it can give, regarding the fact you do have more feel physically, rather than sound. Both important, you might even want to combine both.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums yea and their new song is GOLD! The two guitarists, Tim and Scott, used Nylon stringed electric Ibanez guitars for this amazingly chill acoustic/jazzy/Spanish sound and it’s unlike anything I’ve heard before. Mix that with the deep bass and tasty drums from the two Clays and man does it make for good music… I’d recommend watching the official video first and then the drum play through maybe in the same video or something like that. You will absolutely not be disappointed. Epic musicianship all around! 🎸 🥁 🔥

He may have had a different mix that what clay was used to, which could have messed him up or B, some people just won't use ear buds that have been in somebody elses ears (wax, etc) My guess it was probably both these issues- he probably wasn't sure how he'd feel with his ear bids, not sure if his specific mix would throw him off and the first thing he thought of was to be a human metronome

Very good question Susanne. I tried to get into that in my post game analysis. Modern bands almost always use click track now. With backing tracks etc synced to the click. It is for sure a very different way of playing to the Led Zep (or other classic rock) approach

@@susannebass5503 the comparison does not work once you realize that the main gist of Bonham was the everpresent "travel" in how he felt keeping the time. you cannot grid Bonham, it changes the feel completely because the main point was always how imperfect it was. while this guy? the grid IS the point. the stems are out there. have a go at yourself. grid it and see how off it is.
