Need to go back to 1967/8 when Cozy had his Ludwig kit set up in the 'billiard room' at my parent's house in Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham. Cozy lived with us (the Ball brothers) whilst we explored ways to break into the 'upmarket' areas of the music business. The Sorcerers, Young Blood, then Dave Ball, Cozy and me started messing around with heavy blues and rock. We even called our first trio "Ideal Milk" as a Cream substitute! We started the use of classical themes with the 1812 Overture. Then we formed the 'Ace Kefford Stand' followed by 'Big Bertha'. Cozy then got the gig with Jeff Beck before the Ball bros and Cozy were back as a band with vocalist Frank Aiello. This band was called 'Bedlam'. During our USA tour opening for Sabbath, Cozy's drum feature was a version of Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue, which Cozy and I combined on with bass and drums playing the main theme.

Cozy Powell probably had the best CV of any rock drummer in the 1970's and '80's. He brought his own big and distinctive personality to any band he played with. I think I recall him saying that his solo was not about demonstrating his technical virtuosity, but about putting on an exciting show for the fans. His drum solo from Rainbow, Live in Munich, 1977 gives a much clearer picture of what he could do. And there's this kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jL2JoLt6q6fWd2Q.html

Amazing drummer. Up there with Bonham, Paice and Palmer for me and not only for his great rock drumming but also his less is more philosophy which taught me a lot not just with regards drumming but how to play with other members in the band. Also Stargazer by Rainbow has one of the greatest intros of all time. He made double bass drums famous but unlike a lot of double bass drummers he knew his way around a snare too, and yes that’s an understatement Dance with the Devil etc. Also old enough to remember being woken with the terrible news of his death. Definitely a where were you when you heard moment and I know exactly where I was on that Sunday, where I was living and who I was with and I can’t say that about many events in life.

MorbidManMusic Formal Beach Wear. I was discussing rock drumming and trying to give an indication so non drummers get an idea. I wasn’t going to get into Dennis Chambers or Dave Weckl for examples of accomplished drummers but so many I could write a 3 hour paper.

Thanks. Saw Cozy do this 1812 solo with Rainbow on their first UK tour in 1976. Never forget it. Bombast central. Had little cannons going off at the end and I think his drums were on a riser ... Cozy Rising 🔥🌈 🔥. What a band. As we left the theatre I heard someone say they’d seen Queen there a few nights before and that it was “nothing compared to this”. Queen are/were fantastic, so such a shame that this line up only lasted a few years. Music was changing then. Punk was about to explode. Rainbow mutated into a heavy version of Foreigner and Journey. I loved those phases too (many core fans didn’t) but this line up were untouchable at the time. Echoing what others have said here, he’s the only drummer who would have fitted with Zeppelin after Bonzo’s death.

I actually believe if Cozy would have been Bonham's replacement, not only being able to play what Bonham did, but give a whole new outlet to Zeppelin's creativity. I understand why they hung it up, but the "What If" factor would have made it so good!! R.I.P John & Cozy...

Seeing Cozy play 'Dance with the Devil' inspired me to take up drums back in 1973. I saw him perform a number of times with Michael Schenker, Whitesnake and Brian May. Truly inspiring drummer who always bought his only style to whoever he played with.

slow & easy is my fave cozy track. whitesnake has had some good drummers. powell, dunbar, aldridge. i think its bogus that dunbar did the tracks for 87's whitesnake lp. but aldridge in all the videos. kinda partial to dunbar. whether it was journey, jefferson starship or snake and many others. He never really got the recognition he deserved. Alot like Powell.

I experienced Cozy Powell with Rainbow (Ritchie Blackmore, Ronnie James Dio, Jimmy Bain and Tony Carey) in 1976, Tivoli concert hall in Copenhagen. Mindblown for life ... I read somewhere that Lars Ulrich (Metallica) was at the same concert and even hung around the Plaza Hotel to meet Ritchie and the band. Not sure if that happened though.

Really enjoyed that commentary, Cozy being a real fave. Can anyone say what the Kill the King drum-pattern is called? Cozy was the pioneer, I believe. Ace of Spades, Gillan's Secret of the Dance / Unchain Your Brain, Spotlight Kid, Gary Moore's Blinder, and possibly Ian Paice's take on Take Me With You, seem in the same vein - fast, like Hot for Teacher, but not quite the same.
