Hello Andrew. I was wondering if you did a review of Never say die the album.I have been a Sabbath fan since1983, when i first heard the Master of reality AlbummFor about 40 years i didnt like this Album at all.I realized recently that it was only because all the negative review i heard from people who could not understand that Sabbath was in heavy progressive rock phase. After the release of Pink Floyd dark side of the moon and its huge succes, many differerent group started to incorporate various musical elements in their songs.Creativity was on the rise but unfortunatly many so called Sabbath fans, it was way too much for them.They couldnt handle it.These people were stuck in 1970 and wanted to hear Iron man and paranoid over and over again.But his was the late 70's and Iommi said in an interview that progressive bands like Floyd, Genesis,Styx. yes and Supertramp were outselling Sabbath by miles.He was actually looking for a sound similar to Queen,Foreigner, the Who ,Boston or Journey. He was just taking a pause from the dark, sinister, doom sound that made them famous.This album has some excellent songs, killer riffs, clear drum sound but the whole thing has a jazzy approach.In a way i am glad i hated this album for so long because i can listenm to it today and enjoy it as if it was a new Sabbath album. This album is criminally underated. I wish you'd review Johnny Blade, shock wave, over to you and the jam session with Bill Ward on vocals Swinging the Chain ! Keep up the excellent work !

There's a clip floating around these premises with Tony Martin and Sebastien from 2014, where they do a decent version of this classic. Aside from no longer being able to hit the high notes (but that's what backing vocals are for!), Tony holds his own very well.

Headless Cross is an AWESOME song. Reminiscent of Heaven and Hell in some ways, with a more glossy production. That big gated reverb snare sounds killer to me, even though it unmistakably dates it to the ‘80s. The Tony Martin era has some very underrated material. I’m glad that Tony Iommi has taken the time to go through the archives and release special editions of these lesser-known albums. It shows he takes pride in all his work. A lot of artists who’ve been around a while often neglect entire chunks of their career.

Headless Cross and TYR and two great albums. The Black Sabbath 7th Star was originally planed as Tony Iommi solo LP but was labeled Black Sabbath for sales. Your reaction to Born Again will be interesting the Sabbath Purple band Ian Gillian on vocals

Was not Geezer on bass. It was “Headless Cross” sessions Bassist Laurence Cottle playing on Album and video. The chant on the title Headless Cross was double harmonies with keyboardist Geoff Nichols (usually set off stage when the band played Live).

Headless Cross is the quintessential sound of Iommi and Black Sabbath to me. This was my first venture into the world of Black Sabbath as a teenager and this album (particularly) and the following albums with this lineup (Tyr - and even the somewhat underrated Cross Purposes upon return) defined Black Sabbath to me for a long time. Also being a huge Dio fan the era the Sabbath era with him is by definition awesome. I am probably in the Sabbath minority, but Ozzy's singing was always complete hit or miss for me. More often than not - mostly a miss. Having seen various Sabbath lineups (Including the 2000's "Heavy and Hell" version of Black Sabbath in this) with Iommi, Geezer, Cozy, Dio, Martin, (even Ozzy), Vinny Appice, Murray and Nicholls I feel blessed. oh - if you ever get near Iommi's solo stuff do check out the 2000 album "Iommi" or the stuff he did with Glenn Hughes - The DEP Sessions and Fused from 2004-2005.

Ahh, the unfairly underrated Tony Martin era. This whole album is spectacular. \m/ The thing with this video is that it takes out the spooky synth intro and middle sections, which I guess was typical of the MTV era. Try When Death Calls next. Btw the bassist, credited as an additional musician, was a dude called Lawrence Cottle. Neil Murray took over on Tyr, the next album. 🙃

The Martin Era of Sabbath was Iommi's most progressive and adventurous with his playing. Also Geezer was not on this, it was Lawrence Cottle on bass

And as a side note, Geezer would play bass on Headless Cross live during the 1994 Cross Purposes tour, and again during the Monsters of Rock tour in South America (first with Bobby Rondinelli on drums, and for the South American dates, with Bill Ward).

This is great song, Tony Martin great and underrated singer, Cozy nailing the drums, and of course Tony Iommis great guitar playing and great bass playing too. I don't remember who played the bass in this record, but it wasn't Geezer who was not in the band then, of course joined again a bit later.The whole Tony Martin era as singer was fantastic, different but awesome.

Never gave these iterations of Sabbath the time of day, but this tune is a banger all round. Edit: Tonys solo album Iommi is well worth a listen and purchase - features Dave Grohl, Ian Astbury, Serg Tankian, Rollins, Billy Corgan, Billy Idol, Phil Anselmo, Skin on vocs. Drummers- Dave Grohl, Matt Cameron, John Tempesta and of course Bill Ward. All bass Lawrence Cottle. All killer, no filler.

Headless Cross was released in April 1989 - Cozy joined Sabbath in 1988 and was in the band from then until 1991 when a horse fell on him and crushed his pelvis when he was recording Dehumanizer's demos with Ronnie James Dio and Geezer Butler back in the group. He would rejoin sometime late 1994 and leave during the northern summer months of 1995 partway through the Forbidden tour. The video was filmed in Battle Abbey. This was Tony Martin's second album, and the first one where he was heavily involved in the writing alongside Iommi and Powell, with some writing also contributed by keyboardist Geoff Nicholls. The bassist on album and in this video is Laurence Cottle. He would only do session work on the album and this video, and for the tour, Neil Murray would join the band. Laurence would later appear on Iommi's solo album "Iommi". Listen to the song "Nightwing" - Cozy goes off on this track, Iommi plays several solos, Martin is amazing vocally and Laurence plays fretless bass on it including a solo at the beginning.

Laurence Cottle on bass. Maybe do Cozy's drum solo from Munich 1977. Another great era of Sabbath greatly overlooked, Cozy was integral in keeping Sabbath going during this period and they smashed it live.

The whole album is a masterpiece. As, in my opinion, are the first three Tony Martin-era albums. My favorite Black Sabbath albums and I know, that I´m not the only one, despite the noise of the majority of Sabbath fans. Tony Martin in his prime was a wonderful singer !

He was offered the job but wanted to stay a session musician as he wasn't really a metal musician. The great Neil Murray took over for the tour and then the next album and tour.

Tony Martin era is forgotten by some people but personally it's my favorite as I listen to it even more lately. The sound on Headless cross album and Tyr and the songs, just awesome. Nothing to do with the original Sabbath but still kicks some serious ass for me. You may want to hear and react to "The Battle of Tyr, Odin's Court, Valhalla" from album Tyr. It is 3 parts but one song in the end.

Cozy Powell is a legend and has played in some major bands over the yrs...This gives me major Dio vibes..Yes Toni and Geezer were trading phrases and it just shows the song writing skills these guys have 🤘✌️🧐

@AndrewRooneyDrums black sabbath was the first music I loved when I achieved sentience and could understand what music is. They are a primordial memory and love from me and like most people it started with ozzy and the sound you are describing. But as a fan that is this deep into them, you have to understand that this still sounds like sabbath to me, because the idea that change, development and progress of the bands sound and production wasn't a big part of the narue of sabbath is wrong. For me Iomi IS sabbath and if your opinion is "because this doesn't sound like paranoid or master of reality it ain't sabbath" then that means that volume 4 isn't sabbath, sabbath bloody sabbath isn't sabbath and haven and hell/mob rules isn't sabbath because those don't sound like the classic albums. Sabbath's evolution was tied to Iomi's evolution which was partly influenced by trends but to me it's all the sabbath sound just not the ozzy, geezer, ward sound.

The bass player on the headless cross album was session bassist Lawrence cottle, geezer left the band in 84. In the video the person playing bass is unknown, nobody can remember who he was, perhaps a roadie or studio employee

That is Cottle in the video. The "unknown" bassist was in the video for "The Shining". They pulled the guy in off the street because he looked the part.

@@markcloer2274 oh yes that's right, I knew it was a Tony Martin era song. I can picture him now in the shining video with the long light brown hair. Poor Laurence doesn't get much attention in the video, I wonder if that's because he wasn't going to be a full time member.

@@robertfurneaux128 Yeah, he agreed to appear in the video so it would feature a full band, but had no desire to be in the spotlight since he was happy being a session guy. He was such a technical player that Neil Murray later said duplicating his intro to "When Death Calls" was a real challenge. Geezer didn't even try, they just used a prerecorded intro on the '94 tour.

What I love about Sabbath is that they had a distinctive sound with every singer they had. Like, DIO-Sabbath sounded very little like Ozzy-Sabbath, and Martin-Sabbath sounds unlike both of the others. For me personally, I love everything DIO did (saw him live twice, which makes me very happy still), but the Tony Martin era of Sabbath is my favorite. Always has been. TYR and Headless Cross are both extremely good albums with several bangers each (you should check out "Valhalla" from TYR). Another thing I need to say, because I always do when I comment your videos: Check out Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg's drumming on the song "The Chosen Legacy" by Dimmu Borgir (studio version). Favorite song with Tony Martin on vocals. He actually did more albums with them than Dio. Lots of underrated stuff in his era. The album Forbidden is sometimes called their worst, but I really like The Illusion Of Power from it.

It’s funny, even after Dio left, they still kind of sound more like Rainbow than Sabbath with the synth, the total absence of blues or jazz in the feel of the song. Still not a bad song, but so different from the Ozzy/Bill Ward era. I love Cozy Powell. His work with Rainbow, ELP and on Robert Plant’s early solo albums, was really outstanding. Died far too young.

Ah, sober stoner metal lol I agree … each iteration of Black Sabbath was different. Dio era was quite different from Ozzy era, but it still felt like Sabbath. Hughes, Ray Gillen, Martin and even Ian Gillan-era, just felt different. Between all the different drummers and singers, they just felt like more of a Sabbath-influenced band, and I think maybe thats why those albums, as good as they were, just didnt go over as well, with the public.

Great reaction, Andrew! Headless Cross (1989) is a masterful album! I like all the songs, but I highlight exactly the title track and another exceptional one: "When Death Calls". Keep reacting to songs by Black Sabbath: the biggest and most influential band in Heavy Metal and perhaps the best and most influential of all time! And Tony Iommi is a very advanced extraterrestrial who was sent to Earth to give us a lot of pleasure with his riffs, songs, musical genius, etc...Greetings from Brazil!!!

Tony Martin doesn't get the respect he deserves, As a vocalist only Ozzy was on more Sabbath albums. I think Martin could sing Dio era Sabbath but only Ozzy can sing Ozz era Sabbath. Martin didn't have the stage presents of Ozzy or Dio but wgat a grest singer. The Bassist was a gy named Lawrence Cottle (a session player), Geezer had left only to return later.

Tony Martin did some great songs with Sabbath (yes, in the eighties) - such as The Shinning on The Eternal Idol; but Sabbath had been swamped by younger, faster bands - and the LA hair scene. Shame, because some the ablums from this era are solid.

That really is a great song, heard it a couple of times before. The sound engineering is spot on. There is a reason it doesn't sound like Black Sabbath though... it isn't. To me Sabbath died years earlier after the release of Never Say Die, ironically enough. The super group we just listened to performing Headless Cross should be called The Tony Iommi Quartet. I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I mean that with all respect and admiration for Tony and the musicians with whom he works, they really are awesome.

I may be an exception but as much as i love the first and original line up, the last years i'm listening way more to the Martin era which i really dig. It's like you said 2 different bands. I can't and don't want to think which is better i just state that i listen to Martin era albums at least every 10 days. Witnessing all the stuff they created and played on 1970's is outstanding, the true pioneers of heavy metal and then they evolved in the next decade's phase heavy metal genre. They were at the top consistently, like Judas Priest for example..they grow and progressed. Awesome, awesome..i'm waiting for more Martin era reactions!

So good. Sounds like Sabbath to me, but I see Sabbath as 5 bands. This was their 80's sound, obviously closer to Dio era sound than Ozzy and even closer to the sound of the previous album (originally slated as an Iommi solo album) Seventh Star. 🤟🧙‍♂️🤟

Great reaction, Andrew! This song illustrates a couple of important points, I think. One is that Black Sabbath was whatever and whoever Tony Iommi said it was. Luckily for us, he had great taste. (Although I'm sure Iommi always wanted Geezer as his first choice, Geezer temporarily left at this point due to what I understand was a dispute over the selection of the band's manager, who Geezer correctly didn't trust; and Geezer returned after that issue played itself out.) Another is that Tony Martin and Cozy Powell were both phenomenal and incredibly underrated. Ozzy, Dio, Martin and Gillan were all incredible, as were Bill Ward and Cozy Powell. As to the best singer, I think it's all a matter of personal taste. Martin is actually probably my favorite, although it's a close call.

You want more Tony Martin era stuff, I really recommend The Hand that Rocks the Cradle from Cross Purposes. Different drummer (Bobby Rondinelli), but that song is so damn good. Geezer had come back by then as well.

This is one of my favorite riffs from Tony Iommi's career. I used to have a Korg Guitar Processor on loan from a friend, and was able to get this sound down to the reverb used, and I had a setting that even made it heavier. But tracks on this album ("Headless Cross") were SUPER fun to play along with. I'm a HUGE Rainbow fan and collector, so Cozy Powell's passing was very sad for me. But this was a great join for him because he fit right in with the music. He always had a HUGE sound to his drums. And "Tony Martin" was an outstanding vocalist out of nowhere, he was a bit of "Ronnie James Dio" but having his own inflections and delivery. And I have to admit, on most of the Ozzy tracks, was personally, BETTER (than Dio) adding his own style to the older songs on the Live video "Cross Purposes" (sadly, Cozy isn't in that tour). Btw - Graham Bonnet (the 2nd vocalist in the Rainbow line-up, and founder of the band "Alcatrazz") visited the site of where a plaque was dedicated to Cozy in his home town: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fbRnhs6Lzb3OpYk.html (notice that "Mark Zonder" of Fates Warning & A-Z was in Graham's band at that time). - Glad you are discovering Cozy, and another great era of Black Sabbath & Rainbow!
