Lars has never been the best drummer ever, but did write some of the most iconic drum parts. It's not always about playing the fastest, or most technical. A lot of the time it's playing FOR the song, and Lars was and still is great at that.

The biggest issue, is he hasn't stayed consistent. He hasn't gained skill over the years, or even just plateaued. He plays all the time,he isn't out of practice. But he often plays like a guy who hasn't been on the kit in 23 years but played for decades, so still kinda has it, but is rusty. Ppl pay for the shows. Yea his drumming is iconic, and if you ever saw the making of hardwired, you'd see he really has such an elementary understanding of time,counting.stuff that isn't "music theory" but you will pick up after 40 years of playing, and he's still kinda back in 4th grade in that regard. If you see how the albums are made, he really just plays such short little pieces, and than they piece meal it all together.

The audio is his raw audio mixed with the stadium audio. It's going to be imperfect-sounding. The live audio from other vids of the performance sounds fine. That should've been the first thing you noted.

Hes in time man , youre watching a live time view of the drum kit the audio from the mics is pushed through the PA systtem, not this dudes phone.

Exactly this! The drums are direct because they're right in front of the phone but the guitar is being heard thru the PA. There's a slight delay between the live sound and the speakers

@Stanton Lewis not excuses, if you've ever been to a live concert in a stadium and paid attention to the sound you're hearing and the musicians playing, you'd hear/ see the delay. And you can hate on Lars all you want for other mistakes he's made, but this isn't one of them. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Yes, the clip there is really not good for drawing any conclusions about Lars because this tour is NOTORIOUS for these audio delay issues. From the desk you'd probably get the best result, but with the crowd, especially like this, it's a clusterfuck. The sound engineering for these shows is abysmal at best.

Dude there is the delay of the guitar live and the « in your face » drum… so yeah i think you’re kind of wrong. Im not a Met Fan boy but at least try a live recorded version 🤷🏼‍♂️

The biggest problem with Lars' drumming is that by his own admission he doesn't practice enough (I don't think he ever goes near a drum kit unless they're recording or on tour). He usually gets much better as tours progress though.

Lars have also some sequels from doing tours like 3h shows for 3 years straight, and had knee arthrisis since mid 2000's. Some shoulders stuff since 90's.

He said somewhere he sits with his iPod at his drumkit jamming on a variety of things, but not practicing per se. Although I gotta say, Lars came out from the Covid Lockdown as a whole different drummer. I dropped my jaw when I realised how on spot he was after that. He clearly took some time to reflect on his playing. Don't get me wrong, he still sounds signaturely Lars.

I stopped at 3:22 to mention that, this tour is NOTORIOUS for sound delay issues. Trust me, it's not the band, it's the PA setup. Which makes it really hard to discern how well they gel together from this audio: That aside, they've started to fix their Live Metallica recordings which actually sucks because it's really no longer live.

Looks like he is playing the song just fine. I think the reason he sounds off is because the recording is picking up both the raw drum sounds. And the drum sounds coming thru the stadium audio

I mean... He is (was) a legend but what is true and seems nobody accepted (in the mainstream) is that from the black album behind, Metallica was Metallica and then, man... that´s no Metallica... they´re just using that name.

Lol not really out of time, there's major lag between the instruments and what you're hearing. It's like when you go to a concert and you see the drummer hit the drum but you don't hear the sound until a little later. It takes longer for sound to travel.

Lars isn't terrible, but he's by far the worst of the Big 4. Benante & Lombardo are WAAY better. Hell Nick Menza was better

Doesn't matter which live performance you watch, he is rather terrible in all of them. I'm still a fan, especially the old days but Lars was always and still is the weakest link, sadly.

Truly awful recording. But I've seen Metallica once a decade since they formed...and you know im a drum nerd... Lars just isn't as good a musician as the rest of the band, imo.
