For all the joy Harry put out in this world he had a tragic childhood. Father left, he and his mother were so poor he often stole from shops as a child so they could eat. Finally was in a good place clean, sober and married to a wonderful lady and he up and dies. George Harrison led others in a rendition of You're Breakin My Heart at his funeral service, that's a surreal funeral.

@@L33ReactsWell, on the bright side Harry left a tonne of great music behind. And one exc film called The Point. It's put forth as a children's flick but it has a deeper meaning, how we should be kind and treat everyone equally. A good teaching tool even today, kids learn empathy without feeling like they're being preached at. The best version is narrated by Ringo.

He was everywhere in the 1970s. He wrote so many hits. His song Best Friend was used as the theme song for The Courtship of Eddie's Father TV series. He and John Lennon were close. He did a lot of work advocating for gun control after John's death. Just one of the best who really is just fading away now he's gone. It's a shame.

Harry Nilsson is THE most underrated genius in songwriting in music history - I say, "underrated" not because he's underrated by music lovers, critics and fellow songwriters, but just because SO few people these days under the age of 30 know his name. The man was BRILLIANT. I highly recommend just listening to his first three albums, at least. He's incredible. He ended up having a sad end to his life - and his alcoholism and drug use prevented, I think, a LOT more music that he could have made, but he's more influential than many people understand. And early on, there was NO better singer in pop music. His voice was remarkable.

A lot of what we call underrated artists are just artists that for whatever reason never really attained the fame or notoriety that their talent almost certainly deserves. This is one of the songs that I would always consider as a contender for best rock song ever.

Harry Nilson had a well-earned reputation as a wildman, and he was close friends with Keith Moon! (Also close with John Lennon in his wilder days). Back in 1971 (when I was 11 years old), my favorite "radio songs" were Nilson's "Can't Live", 3-Dog Night's "One", and McCartney's "Uncle Albert", and I didn't know who Nilson was back then. My favorite albums at the time were Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, and "Tommy". When I was 9 years old I thought "Tommy the Who" was the name of that album. It took me a while to learn that "The Who" was the band's name. Eventually the Who became my favorite band.

George Harrison got everyone to sing it at Nilsson's funeral) from the follow up album Son of Schmilsson. Jump into the Fire was an absolute hit in the early 1970s in the GDR, even behind the Iron Curtain. We couldn't buy the record, but everyone copied it from the radio onto tape. Only this long version, of course. Guitarist Chris Spedding is a fantastic musician who has played on countless albums with a wide variety of bands and singers. He also had a solo career with songs like "Motor Biking" and "Pogo Dancing" or "Guitar Jamboree" in which he imitated the styles of all the famous guitarists.

He had an amazing vocal range. I can't remember what it was, but very few singers could go as low and high as he could and still sing in key. And he could sing soft and belt it out. His biggest hit was 'Without You'. From the story I heard, he heard the song and thought it was the Beatles. He was friends with John Lennon (they had some crazy times together, a whole other story) and when he saw Lennon soon after hearing that song he asked him if he would mind if he covered the song. He found out it was a Badfinger song (I LOVE their original version).
