Snarky Puppy is my favorite band. For this session, their usual drummer couldn’t make it, so they reached out to Larnell. He learned the drum parts ON THE FLIGHT OVER. Genius!

Snarky Puppy are so good, the bassist Michael League (who also wrote this tune) is the bandleader. Larnell was a last minute addition to this recording session and learned the songs on the plane ride over.

@@JasonSayersDrums He arrived two hours before the first recording session. There is a 38 minute documentary on the making of this album and the 12 consutive date European tour attached to it that is a must see. If you like the band now, watch that. The entire album was written in maybe two weeks with Michael writing immediately upon arrival at the studio. Their usual drummer Sput (check him out) had a last minute either passport or family issue and couldn't make it. They then played two sets a day for four days, choosing the best take for the album. There are additional solos by Larnell and others included on the CD/DVD combo. All 8 final takes have videos on KZfaq and each is worth watching. The band members are in red headphones and audience in silver. The str8ng section plays on a couple songs bringing the band up to around 18 members or so. The final track, Lingus, is possibly one of the greatest pieces of music I have heard. A keyboardist reactor included it in a video of three solos that made him consider quitting the instrument. AKA, Corey Henry is a beast.

If you dug this one, you should check out the entire "We Like It Here," session, which is filmed/recorded at the same performance/recording. Lingus is by far THE track from that session, but every song from the session is insanely good. Welcome to the Snarky Puppy rabbit hole.

Love your responses. If you haven't seen it, Larnell has a video on Drumeo in which he goes through his process of quickly learning a song (The song is called "Chic's Pain")...pretty fascinating stuff. And he talks about learning all the pieces for this set with Snarky Puppy on a trans-Atlantic flight. Brilliant.

You HAVE to check out Larnell Lewis’ City of Lights. Brilliant drum solo on a Moby Dick level. His musical IQ is off the charts. And Lingus by Snarky Puppy from this same project. Larnell is THAT DUDE!!!

Something that I caught this time through - when the kit drummer is going off, someone else needs to be the time foundation, keeping it moving and locked in for everyone else. On this track that's (unusually!) Shaun Martin on the Moog bass. The way he and Larnell trade off the role is just _impeccable._

I just happened onto your video.. If you haven't listen to Snarky Puppy's Lingus you need to do that immediately. I saw an interview video with Larnell where he said he learned that entire album on the flight over to record it with them. He wasn't playing with them and that's what he flew into......Cory Henry's keyboard solo is freak of Nature material and well worth the listen of Lingus just for that. Larnell's kit work on that is other worldly.....He's a BEAST

I'm sure someone else will have mentioned but - this was his first concert with them, he learnt all of the drum parts for the whole concert on the plane over to Amsterdam, their original drummer I was refused a visa (he's Venezuelan I believe whereas Lewis is American) so they had to draft him in at short notice. And this is just one number from the whole concert he learnt the entire set on that flight. Some of the pieces are in 5 some of them are in 7 and 11, he learned them all. Incredible stuff.

I wasn’t sure about this band, but this song is what sold me on Snarky Puppy. It’s a whole new kind of jazz at least one I’ve never heard before. But I can’t say enough good things about Larnell. He’s a nice dude, and I’ve only had one conversation with him on KZfaq, but it made me feel special. And not only that, but he is in my opinion the best drummer you’re going to find outside of metal.
