I love Portnoys drumming. I saw Dream Theater with Mangini on drums. Mangini is a killer player, but Mike Portnoy has soul. MP's sense of groove and soul is irreplaceable. Dream Theater has been missing it since he's been gone.

I'm thrilled that he's returned. Was some of the best news this year. His influence to the sound and energy in DT was never more evident than his absence in their music without him. I haven't been excited for a new DT album since their first release without him (A Dramatic Turn of Events). Meanwhile, it was present in his various other projects - especially Sons of Apollo. He has such a fun and musical energy. He's also one of the most relaxed Prog drummers I know of.

I hope Portnoy will never try to reproduce what Mangini did for 13 years. Two different worlds, and in my opinion, Portnoy is nowhere close to Mangini. Dreamtheater took a walk down Nostalgic road and fired Mangini for this? What a shame.

Really? I understand you like Mangini and he is an amazing drummer but come on. Portnoy and Mangini are both elite drummers.

not the “best” but like Neil Peart, he makes great drumming relatable…like an average drummer could do it but then realizes it is much harder and more technical than you think. Managini is the drummer we know we can’t be, Portnoy is the drummer we aspire to be. As a long time DT fan I absolutely love all eras, but I am super happy to see him back. Huge thanks to Mangini for providing some great envelope pushing performances! And welcome home Portnoy🎉

That's a great explanation. Compared to most other prog drummers, Portnoy's parts have always been relatively easy for me to play and it's because his drum parts are frankly not that complex. The frequent time signature changes give the illusion that it's complicated, but anyone who understands drumming will be able to quickly see that what he's doing is pretty elementary. But that's ok, because he's so good at creating drum parts that fit the music and his groove is also outstanding. That's what matters most for a drummer.

Portnoy DT and Mangini DT are 2 different animals. I don't see Portnoy ever doing Mangini era. It's more of a respect for each other to not do it.

He’s up there top-tier probably top-five but as of right now all time EL Estapario is just another level and doing stuff I haven’t seen yet. Portnoy is a monster though also, taking nothing away from him.

Was hoping they'd fire Labrie, didn't really think Mangini needed to be kicked out. He sounded great on the last two albums. I thought Portnoy didn't like how bad James was live and he isn't any better now than he was back in 2009 so this move is weird. Portnoy has been doing his same signature fills for 20+ years now and you can even hear that in Petrucci's solo album so when Mangini stepped in it was refreshing for me.

I love Mangini’s technical skills and he’s a good live band BUT Portnoy amps up the crowd more than Mangini. Both are magnificent drummers!!!! Dream Theater has a new album in the works with Portnoy!!!! Honestly can’t wait!!!!!

How differently people perceive music (from some comments down below).....now i can hope in some good music by dream theater again, because the last 13 years they have been🙉....... that's the damage caused by extreme technicality.....people tends to forget about melodies and musicality......DT lost their soul and hopefully there is still something to save

The funny thing is - while the Mangini-era DT is clearly inferior to MP era, I would argue they have been less technical in the MM era. The Astonishing was their least technical and most melodic album. Distance Over Time was their most concise album, with a lot of songs in the 4-6 minute range. A Dramatic Turn of Events had its technical moments but also had a ton of memorable melodies.

@@CompleteProducer84 difficult to say, because MP mixes his technicality with the way he serves the song, so I agree that often the listeners get less of the complexity and more of the musicality. But for me above all, is how the band created the song. I just loved how MP (I watched all of their documentaries) helped forming the songs (maybe he wasn't writing so much music, but he just put together the different parts in a great way, very organic and with a great flow). And this is what I loved of DT in the past. The perfect mix of different elements. That was for me the secret.
