I'm a Portnoy fan as well. Personally, When the Water Breaks from the same concert is, in my opinion, Portnoy's best performance ever.

That is called a Chapman stick. It usually has individually tuned strings. 10-12 strings usually.

Also the strings often mirror each other. It's like two 5 or 6 string basses stuck together at the highest notes. The one is video is obviously not tuned this way.

LaBrie's vocals are awesome in Image n Words and Awake. Apart from it, that's all I could force myself liking it. And I tried really hard.

I always find myself comparing him to Scott Stapp from Creed. I can listen to 1 or 2 songs but after a while it grates on you.

The Chapman Stick that Tony plays is a very unique instrument. The top half is a bass the bottom half is a guitar. You play it by tapping the strings. You can actually play bass and guitar simultaneously

John Myung also plays a chapman stick on a DT song or two... New Millennium I think is one

Well, not really. It does have bass strings, but its not half and half. Bass strings are in the middle, and on top and bottom there are guitar strings.

Hi Jason , i'm also a Portnoy's Lover since 1993 . I Had the chance to meet him Backstage with DT in Lyon , france 1997 . We had Fun together , He's so simple & crazy . And i also prefer instrumentals with him , just like " Instrumedley " by exemple . Cheers .

3* Members from DT btw. Only one isnt (the bassist). Im a drummer myself and Portnoy is probably my biggest influence aswell, but man if Petrucci didnt steal the show in this one.

Portnoy with DT and AFTER DT are two different drummers. I guess he's not been challenged enough 😉

Personally, I think Dream Theater was stuck. A Nightmare to Remember, was just basically a greatest hits of various DT riffs. He needed too leave. I saw him during the "A7X" Nightmare tour, and he was all smiles, looking like a kid coming down the stairs for Christmas morning.

Absolutely with you on JL’s vocals. Kind of the same way on JP’s guitar - granted, the man can play anything, but sometimes he just gets into these endless “watch how many notes I can play” modes and it gets monotonous.

Uncontroversial Opinion: Mike Portnoy was the best part of Dream Theater. Uncontroversial because Mike Portnoy is the best part of every band he's played in. And Dream Theater is objectively worse (but still incredible) with Mike Mangini. He's just not as, for lack of a better word, musical as Portnoy. Sounds like a drum machine playing Portnoy's bits.

Mike was definitely the sole of Dream Theatre, all the other members are a bit boring and have very little charisma
