John's wife was pregnant and went into labor while they were recording the studio version, thus the title and baby sound effect at the beginning.

Old comment but the others also recorded the bulk of the song while John was at the hospital, and then he joined afterwards to record the guitar tracks.

I think Magna Carta Records approached both Mike Portnoy and Terry Bozzio, both drummers of some renown, to form musical supergroups in 1997. Portnoy formed Liquid Tension Experiment, and Bozzio formed Black Light Syndrome; both of which have Tony Levin in the lineup.

This song has it all in terms of guitar, shredding, super bends, heavy complicated riffs, fast unison passages, everything! Just recorded this in videos on my channel, and now I'm playing it as a daily routine to practice all of those techniques, sort of as a warm-up exercise, love it!

This is one of the more expanded LTE tracks. I lean towards "Paradigm Shift" and "Acid Rain" as the cooler tracks. I have not heard any specific reasoning as to the formation of LTE but sometimes it's just fun to play without a singer when the players are a s skilled as they are. I know it's certainly amazing to listen to.

Portnoy was looking for specific musicians for a new side project outside DT, they included Ruddess, Levin, and a guitarist I can't recall now. The guitarist had a tour with other guys at the time so he ended up just calling Petrucci to join. It was during the time recording LTE that he and Petrucci realized how much composition chemistry they had with Ruddess, so they fired Derek Sherinian and Ruddess became DT's new keyboardist and still is to this day.

PS: Paradigm Shift, Kindred Spirits, Freedom of Speech, Universal Mind, Acid Rain, Biaxident, Another Dimension and When The Water Breaks are all great and I can't decide which ones I prefer over one another. Great stuff.
@DiegoDeschain5 жыл бұрын
Another fun fact regarding this song in particular is that its name and the baby sounds in the beggining are because Petrucci received a call saying his wife's water had just broke when they were in studio recording, hence the name of the song.
@samjerbs5 жыл бұрын
I think the original guitarist Portnoy wanted was Dimebag, actually! That would've been interesting for sure, but im glad it didnt work out as Petrucci is the perfect fit for this music imo

I was fortunate enough to see these guys during their first tour. LTE is amazing and there are a few others like them such as Bozzio Levin Stevens, Levin Minnemann Rudess, Levin Torn White. LTE came from the label Magna Carta which wound up Inside Out Music. Too much talent for vocals. Another great choice.

My favorite LTE track is Universal Mind (Live in NYC version) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbaplJth1JPcqXU.htmlh, with Acid rain as a close second, and paradigm shift probably third. When the water breaks is fantastic too, although maybe too long of a song for a intro to the band. For an intro to LTE I usually go with Acid Rain or Universal Mind.

Hey Jim, You'll findout eventually that Mike Portnoy is a "workaholic", but LTE has been on hiatus for a few years because he is not in Dream Theater anymore (for 3 albums), and it was a HUGE deal for us fans (still is for many). I do enjoy the 3 albums with their Drummer Mike Mangini (who has played with Steve Vai among many others, and is friends with Portnoy), but Portnoy was a force to be reckoned with, not only as a drummer, but as a driving force for the band, kept in close contact with their fans, made sure there were Live vidz for each tour, providing "rare" tracks and doing "Cover" songs, and involved in their merchandise. But these days, I see his many side-projects/bands as more to enjoy, with great talents as well in each of them. Eventually you'll get to; Transatlantic, Mike Portnoy's Amazing Journey, Yellow Matter Custard, Cygnus and the Sea Monsters, Neal Morse/Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors, Adrenaline Mob, Winery Dogs, Metal Allegiance, and current band, Sons of Apollo. Also here are the "auditions" Dream Theater had when Portnoy took a hiatus, or fired, or split (a few vids out there with Portnoy's side and DT's version, but I digress): kzfaq.info/sun/PL2DU3TBNutEfMeG1MuXyZk4MHVIlfrDx6 Don't forget to checkout "District 97 - Snow Country" for a reaction video :). Even though, I may be the only one to know about them in your audience (well . . . maybe 2?) :p. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/isqlpKSa3NacaXk.html Fun reaction video for LTE, its been awhile since I've watched that DVD.

Who would've thought if you get a bunch of A+ musicians together they write some utterly unmemorable. No one "serves the song" here. It's like mixing to many colours it just comes out black. No! Just no! Stop misinforming people. LTE was idealized by the people at Magna Carta Records, who wanted Mike Portnoy to assemble a supergroup of musicians, in the same vein they had done with the Bozzio Levin Stevens project. Portnoy came up with a list of names, ended up without a guitarist for the first time they tried to make it happen, then ended up choosing his own bandmate Petrucci for the second time. These four guys got together and the rest is history.

Toni Levin - respect! But... Technical skills of these four musicians are beyond comprihension, but not a surprise to anyone anymore. For me this represents Dream Theater way of approach to music: Everyone plays everything they can in every song which make the songs lose all creativity, unpredictability and most of all the essence, soul. I thought this kind of music to be best possible music in the world, when I was 15. Sorry, can't like this.
