Fun fact: I attended a Judy Collins book signing event in back 2005. We spent 4 hours listening to her share life stories from her book. Someone asked her about Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. "Why did Stephen penn "Will you come see me, Thursdays and Saturdays?" What was the significance of those two days?" Judy replied "he chose those two days because i would see my therapist on Wednesdays and Fridays, so he figured Thursday and Saturday were the best times to talk with me. He played the song for me right after he wrote it, and it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard. But i told him, I'm still not getting back together with you!" What's great is they managed to maintain a lifelong friendship, and in 2015, she and Stephen spent a year touring together ❤️

He has no kids of his own, just us 3 and treats us like a proper dad, kind, caring, loving; a dad we had no experience of as our own was a violent drunk who was a *astard. When I say dad, I mean my stepdad, he's my real father; he worked like a dog for us, something our bio parent would never do. We love and adore him. I had just moved into my dorm room my first year in college. I heard this magical music coming from down the hall. I followed it and stopped at the open door and said to the girl inside “who or what is that?” She invited me in and shared the whole album with me. We became fast friends and I became a lifelong fan of CSN, CSNY and all their solo stuff. I still get teary-eyed because this song is so good and holds such great memories.

I am in my 50s. I had heard this song when I was young and honestly never paid it much attention. (Youthful idea of soft old music not being worth my time.) I "discovered" it again about 5 years ago. I must have listened to it 100s of times in the next months. I truly think this is one of the best songs ever written, of any genre. I could never get tired of hearing it. It is supremely good. Beyond my words to express.

CSNY were the main attraction but the preceding acts were Jesse Colin Young (Youngbloods), Santana, and The Band. I was at Woodstock when they premiered this song and just before they started, Steven told us that they “were scared sh**less” and then they performed it and it was magnificent and all 500,000 of us, collectively, couldn’t believe what we had just experienced. Lee, I am 64, and I still remember my first love, and the way he made me feel. I don't know if he felt the same way, but something in his voice one time when we spoke years later, made me think that he did. It was so overwhelming for me that I was afraid to say the words "I love you".. I wish I had, even though I think he knew I was crazy about him. Needless to say, when you are 15, you aren't emotionally equipped to handle such feelings (he was 18). Great reaction to a great song. These guys were magic together. You need to listen to them at Woodstock, where the late, great David Crosby says "hey man, this is our second gig", and they were scared "shitless" If you have not watched the movie/documentary about Woodstock, it's definitely worth the watch. Take care everybody!

Interesting story about the cover of their debut album shown here. Shot by famous rock photographer Henry Diltz who started out as a folky in the early ‘60’s and took up photography as a hobby and turned it into a profession. For the debut CSN cover photo, they found an abandoned house in West Hollywood for the photo shoot. They hadn’t thought of the name of the group yet. Once they came up with “Crosby Stills and Nash” they realized the order in the picture shot was Nash, Stills and Crosby. So they went back a few days later to reshoot it with them sitting in the right order but the house had been demolished already. So the original is what is the cover. Diltz had a really cool gallery called Morrison Hotel on the first floor of the restaurant called Fleetwoods owned by Mick Fleetwood on Front Street in the Lahaina Store in Lahaina in Hawaii. Back in 2017 I bought a copy of Diltz’s fabulous photography book in the gallery and had the pleasure of seeing Mick Fleetwood do a talk there about The Rolling Stones (it was a Rolling Stones theme night at the gallery) and later perform in his restaurant. Sadly it all burned down in the fire last year.

Stills and Young both played lead guitar, first in Buffalo Springfield and later in CSN&Y. In the studio, Stills played basically ALL of the instruments on the tracks. When it came time to tour, he felt that they needed a second lead to handle all of it, so he called his old friend Neil (even though the two of them fought a lot). It freed Stills up to play other instruments live and it gave them the signature dueling lead guitars like in Buffalo Springfield. Stills also did some amazing work on his solo albums.

The distinctive guitar sound you were talking about is produced by fingerpicking. Stephen Stills was one of the best guitar players of his generation guitar players looked up to him. His acoustic work is outstanding, and basically all the intricate guitar you hear on the album is him.

I cannot remember if you've done " helplessly hoping" ... but the harmonies on that one are out of this world

Recently, 3 progresive rock artists decided to jump into the 3-part harmony singer/songwriter arena under the name D'Virgilio, Morse & Jennings. They have 2 albums that sound pretty good and I'm pretty sure they play most, if not all, the instruments. They are Nick D'Virgilio (Spock's Beard, Big Big Train, etc), Neal Morse (Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, The Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors, etc) and Ross Jennings (Haken). CSN will always be the cream of the crop for these types of harmonies, but DMJ does harmonize very well together. Check out the albums Troika and Sophomore, if you're interested.

Stephen Stills brings the salsa to all of CSN&Y. You'll really dig his "Go Back Home" on the Stephen Stills album. Fabulous music and great guitar duet with Eric Clapton.

This is one of those songs where you think it can’t get any better. And then it does.

I fell in love with CSN during my college days in the late 70s, early 80s. I had the Deja Vu album and listened to it a lot. But this was also the time I started getting into Yes and Led Zeppelin so my listening time was split between them. Good stuff that is timeless!

Harmony was great and with no auto tune. I saw CSN their second time at Woodstock (Bethel Woods) and they still sounded great as old as they were at the time.
