In this video, "Play These Two Important Rhythms Well and Your Band Will Love You," I break down two essential rhythms that every jazz musician should master for a stronger sense of groove and swing. While the focus is on applying these rhythms to the drums, these rhythms are crucial for all band members to understand and execute effectively. Whether you're a drummer looking to enhance your skills or a jazz musician seeking to improve your overall musicality, "Play These Two Important Rhythms Well and Your Band Will Love You," will help you improve your groove and swing. Promise!

"Hi hats make the pocket strong"....Yes!!!!!! Hi hats are so underestimated and overlooked. Just when I think you can't offer any more wonderful advise, you come back even stronger. People underestimate the simple stuff. Quarter notes on the ride and strong "2 and 4" on the hi hats. Finding the "sweet spot" on the ride without wandering all over the place is so important! Thank you again!

I’ve had the Eddie Davis/Johnny Griffin Live at Minton’s album on repeat since last Friday. I am amazed by the way Ben Riley’s quarter note ride and left foot 2&4 feel. The “skip” note is in there but it’s all about the quarter note, and his quarter notes are swinging hard! This video hit at the right time for me. Thanks brother! FP

Great lesson, yet again. My number one struggle is to transition from simple time to double time or halftime and vice versa. I understand that the quarter note remains the same. But the transition moment is where the struggle happens. Do you happen by any chance to have a video on this topic? Or maybe a good idea for a future video 😊. I subscribe to the channel but didn’t find a video on the topic. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!

I like nylon tips for feel and sound. Although I don’t think they sound as good on this cymbal as they do on my normally darker cymbal. A lot of my favorite jazz drummers play with nylon tips: Kenny Washington, Kendrick Scott, Rodney Green, Louis Hayes, etc.
