Great video. Doubles have felt so off for me for ages, hopefully I can get them nice and smooth with this advice (: . Also the Japanese at 13:34 caught me off guard, is there any particular reason you said that? Currently studying abroad in Japan and got started on drums(as opposed to a practice pad) thanks to my uni lol haha

Joe is the reason I switched from rock to jazz in the 60's. He was and still is, my favorite drummer of all time. Over the years, I've learned that his personality and humility were wonderful.

Hi Quincy, I really enjoy your video's. I have a question about playing with brushes. Are you playing brushes with snares off or on and why?
@rokuken7 күн бұрын
I think I have a problem. I’m a righty, but all my life I use my left hand to play sounds as my hi-hat and the right to make the snare sound and I just noticed I was doing it wrong this whole time. It is difficult to program my brain and do the hi-hat with the right and the snare with the left. It just doesn’t feel right for me. Am I wrong to think this way or should I just do my best to change that?

At 3:20, the info on the bass drum so SOOOO important! Anyone who has transitioned from rock to jazz needs to understand this. The bass drum is an instrument and not a weapon. It is capable of so many different sounds. This is one of the many different aspects of experimenting that can be so fulfilling. Patience, a light touch, going for quality instead of quantity ("less is more" vs. getting in as many notes as possible). "Finesse" is a word I like to use. This is why I love jazz so much more than rock. I'm not down on rock but after transitioning to jazz in the late 60's, I discovered a whole new universe. Can you tell I'm smiling right now? Something that very few drummers mention is body posture. Harold Jones says this opened up a new world for him back in the '70's and he still uses it today. Watch the great drummers of the past, Papa Jo, Louis Bellson, Joe Morello and others. Facial expressions - smile, don't frown like you're in agony. Quincy, you have this down perfectly. You are such a joy to watch and listen to.

Quincy, that was pretty slick how you switched from sticks to brushes. I found a way myself, but I like the you did it better. Very cool .

Great tip!!! I have been switching between sticks and brushes for many years and really never thought about it too much. I pretty much do the same things with either the floor Tom or bass drum depending upon the song and tempo. I also utilize other things that may be sitting next to my floor tom, such as a drum case😊

On some Jimmy Cobb recordings he switches so perfectly I’m thinking it’s a punch in. lol just kidding of course. He was a master and one of my all time favorites. Also, Jack DeJohnette makes some incredible switches on Chris Potter’s Unspoken album. That album? Holy cow! Get it if you don’t have it. Switching from sticks to brushes also is nice for bass solos. Then I can keep the intensity with less volume. Great lesson! FP

Would you say that the majority of jazz drummers prefer playing brushes with the snares off?
@drumqtips7 күн бұрын
Not at all! I think most play with snares of factually. But many of my personal faves play with the snares off.

@@drumqtips - Thanks for the info, Quincy! By the way, if you ever play a gig out here in Honolulu, I’d be happy to provide drums for you. I’ve loaned out my Gretsch Round Badge bebop kit to many players including Brian Blade and Marcus Gilmore in the past. Aloha!
A fun little trick I like to use is to bend the loops at the end of the brushes to a 90 degree angle and hang them off the lugs of my floor tom!

Very cool little trick!
@MattMurphyMusicTeacher3 күн бұрын
That’s a really good idea
@Gretch608 күн бұрын
Great Q, I already experiment with the same tricks. But what if you set up the floor tom with a little bit of angle towards you? Then the brush moves a way. So you need to put your floor tom straight. Its tricky ;-)
@drumqtips7 күн бұрын
Yeah the angle that the floor tom leans does make a huge difference if this method could work or not.

Just here for the part were you go from the sticks back to the brushes, that‘s what i always think is much more difficult to manage
@drumqtips7 күн бұрын
Yeah that certainly is very tricky Dennis! Hope this helped.
@dennisblassnig91446 күн бұрын
@@drumqtips yes it certainly helped a lot, just to see you having a completely different approach to that thing. It‘s like, i don‘t even need to practice the way you‘re doing it, its more like, why the heck didn‘t i come up with that solution myself. So thank you and really appreciate your lessons, especially when they are about that stuff, that normal music college teachers tend to forget.
