It's a double bell euphonium :) I also didn't know that exists before I watched the OG video a few months ago

Not all of us paying attention to this are musicians or have a musicians' ear. I found Dirty Loops maybe six months ago, and they transformed the way I listen. I know jack squat about music. But even my ignorant ears hear complexity and beauty. First listen was Follow the Light and I listened a dozen times without moving. By the next day I thought I could hear what was happening, but of course I still couldn't. And all of these months of listening later, having listened to everything Dirty Loops has out there more times than I can count, I still don't hear it all until someone like you points and I get that flash of hearing the connection and WHY it sparks pleasure. So please, don't think that just because we're listening, we know. Not all of us do. Keep talking, it's deeply appreciated.

The rhythmic and key changes they made to this classic while maintaining the original sound is pure genius... not to mention their incredible fills, solos and breakdowns.

LOL I can imagine the impish grins on the DL guys' faces when one of them pipes up with "let's take one of the most iconic pop songs ever.... & swing it in 12(mostly!), with a huge synphonic movie soundtrack interlude towards the end" Cue much giggling & nodding. *So* much talent to be able to pull off something this intricate & music-for-musicians-ish.... & yet still have it be satisfying to a wide audience. How killer are Cory & his horn section tho?! Anyhoo, I'll let other folks pile on more DL requests, & instead I'll ask you take a look at Scary Pockets doing their funkify thing to a Daft Punk cover, in this case alongside one of Europe's finest big bands, & the always excellent Steve Swatkins doing his thing thru a talkbox. The three of them are long time friends and attend Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden. It is the Juilliard of the USA. Outstanding musicianship and an obsession with perfection. Then you couple them with Quincy Jones who put Michael on the map with the album "Off the Wall." I said it before, the best thing that happened was that David Foster sold their contract to Quincy Jones. He knows what he has and he does not have to perform with them. He can set them free. You are gonna hear some amazing things from these guys. They are a real blessing to us.

If you're interested in that beautiful horn section ("The Hornheads", former horn section for prince), I'd recommend checking out more of Cory Wong's stuff. for some horn-heavy older stuff I'd recommend: "Cory Wong // Work It Out (feat. Antwaun Stanley)" and "Cory Wong // "Click Bait" (feat. The Hornheads) " and for some newer stuff (no less horn-heavy): "Cory Wong // "Direct Flyte" (feat. Victor Wooten) " and "Cory Wong // "Concrete" (feat. Mark Lettieri) " Cory Wong is probably my most listened-to artist in the past 2 years. He's also part of the INCREDIBLE minimalist-funk band Vulfpeck. He (and Vulfpeck) have also collaborated with some absolute legends such as David T. Walker, Bernard Purdie, James Gadson, Nate Smith, Victor Wooten, etc.

You’re so good man seemingly not ever running out of analytical superlatives. I typically do halfway through any of Dirty Loops’ tunes. They are totally unique. And not just unique for its own sake which can often get boring; their songs are incredibly approachable and melodic (catchy) for the masses. I’m actually a bit disappointed with Quincy’s team because these guys need more global exposure.

The double bell euphonium is a duplex instrument based on the euphonium. The larger bell produces the mellow tone of a standard euphonium; the second smaller bell has a brighter tone, similar to a baritone horn or valve trombone. The instrument is sometimes dismissed as a novelty, but has had a small number of enthusiastic adherents, although few professional musicians use it as their sole or primary instrument. The smaller bell can give more appropriate tone in the higher range of the instrument. The two bells can also be used for special effects, such as echoes, and using the distinctly different tone of the two bells for a single musician to give the effect of call and response

Brilliant reaction. Thanks! I really like that you're stopping and going into details like that, because no matter how many times I listen to this song, there always seem to be some new little detail that I've missed. That horn section is just so ridiculously tight and Michael B. Nelson with a double-bell euphonium is just too cool for words. As far as I can figure it out, that interlude is some kind of 3/2 on top of the 12/8. There's definitely some kind of 3 to 4 thing going on, but if you want to know exactly what bass and drums are doing, I think you will have to get the bass and drum books that Henrik and Aron released (I think the link for that is in the description of the original video) for the Turbo album. :) There are three more songs, from that album, with videos (Follow the Light on DL's channel, and Turbo and Ring of Saturn on Cory Wong's channel), but I'd recommend at least listening to the other tracks as well. They did the whole album collab over skype, and at the time of the album release (and as far as I know still to this day) they've never even met in person. Cory and Aron geeked out over filming equipment and setup, to make sure that they had films that Aron could put together to make it seem like they were in the same room. Cory talks a bit about it on his podcast (WongNotes) in the episode where he has Henrik as his guest. Henrik also said, in a Swedish podcast, that they had Aron's girlfriend posing as Cory, so they'd know where to look when filming. :D

I'm a decent bass player, but these guys, wtf. I've loved their shit for a long time now, and many other killer composers and players. For me, the the #1 aspect of this was the arrangement. Of course, you have to have players that can play that arrangement, and they do, in spades. I don't know who arranged this but I suspect that the core members were heavily involved in it. That horn section was on point, they were killing. I saw Maynard Ferguson big band years ago in concert in Jacksonville Florida, they were killing it too. This was just like that. A superb horn section and excelled in ensemble playing. I've heard other great horn sections as well, probably my favorite from Tower of Power. I don't know to fawn over the bass drums and vocals, because we already know they stick the landing, every freaking time. Great track. Love your reaction to it. It was kind of like my own when I first heard it. WTF.

Hi Tony, that was one dope reaction, - and shout out to Big Pookey! ☺️👍 As others were saying, Cory Wong’s interview of Henrik on his podcast Wong Notes sheds a lot of light onto the collaboration and the making of this album, and this track in particular. Some musical geniuses at work, for sure ;) The writing and arrangement of it was done by Dirty Loops, Cory Wong and Michael Nelson (leader, composer, arranger and the trombonist of the Hornheads). It’s just so good! I’m glad you pointed out the background vocals, all by Jonah. They’re stunning, as is everything else… (Incidentally, you’ve both times missed him putting on his ‘Stevie’ sunnies during that bridge section 😉 before channeling some more of Stevie’s vocals -hilarious!) What does so much for me on this track is the amount of ‘little things’ going on underneath in the bass, guitar and horn riffs, whilst most of the time Aron is laying down this relentless 4/4 beat… it’s super busy, often syncopated -, and you can still groove on with it. And at 6:29! 🤣😂🤣 I love how Dirty Loops first blow your mind, then blow it some more…. then just drop you back down into the funkiest groove as if nothing had happened ;) To listen to this with you, for me is just super fun and super instructional, and adds so much to my understanding of this music. Again, thanks so much, Tony 🙏 Their tracks “Follow the Light”, “Turbo” and “Ring of Saturn” from the same album, all with visuals, are also highly worth checking out and reacting to (as are all the others, albeit without videos). Yeah, a couple of folks have already gotten to the first part of that unusual horn -- the double-bell euphonium. My understanding (and I don't play brass) is that the horn transitions from one bell to the other depending upon the pitch -- lower notes from the big bell, higher notes from the smaller bell. I think the harmony you heard was from one of the other horns.

8:45 sounds like a shuffle half timed to make it sound like 6/8.

My brother introduced me to fusion in late 80' ( he's a drummer) so after learning about guys like Coliutta, chambers, Gadd, weckl, etc. and my favorite guitarist of the genre, Allan Holdsworth, I can really appreciate what's going on here! They're making very complex music very palatable for the masses...BEAUTIFUL STUFF! Also, don't ever apologize for rewinding, your reactions are perfect!

This is absolutely amazing! EVERYTHING is so tight and synched up. I know there is post production, but the engineers have to have excellence to START with for it to come out like this. Back in the day (70s) I was a semi-pro trumpet player. At my very BEST, I wouldn't belong in the same room with these guys! Spectacular re-imagination of a classic! MJ meets EWF meets Steely Dan meets Jacko, meets who knows else!! WOW!! Great reaction!

I’ve watched interviews with both Jonah and Henrik and they are so humble.

Fun fact, They weren't in the same room while this was filmed or even produced, same goes for their whole album. Corey and the horns were in the US while Dirty Loops were in Sweden, They just found the same kind of background and filmed separately.

when I'm enjoying/experiencing re-arrangements like this ... I honestly LOVE watching people react to a familiar song that is is "reinvented" or expanded. especially Live. as a drummer and also writer, its fascinating to see "common folk" and "civilians" in complete confusion. They know its changed up, but have no clue why they love it more. THAT friends is when musicians have done their job. Giving honor, credit, and dignity to the original, and expanding it. Too often people say the reinterpretation was a "remake" NO! Artists, TRUE musicians never seek to "improve" a performance. They simply "reimagine" and hope to touch the essence of the original. ~R.

That there is a double belled euphonium. One side sounds more warm, the other side sounds more bright and brassy. They were used in the early 20th century but kind of fell out of style just before mid century. Surprise the hell out of me to see it in this video, but the guy sounds damn good on it.

So many little things to discover. Eg, a sample drops on the snare throughout the song. Every 8th snare in chorus, and every 2 and then every 4 elseware. This sort of stuff just keeps their tracks so re-listenable.

I am a retired touring sound engineer after 43 years and 25 million miles. I would come out of retirement to mix these guys.

Sooo...12/8 in the break, but half-time. If you count 1-and-a two-and-a '3' is the snare hit and the downbeat of that feel will catch up with you when the trumpets come back in the last 8 bars. Bass is resting the downbeat and playing the and-a. The symmetry and precision of Aron's right-hand doubles actually make me think of how a DCI drumline vet would play them. Great reaction. There is something very weird going on with this shuffle, in how Jonah sub-divides his vocals in the choruses. He seems to divide stuff that realistically cannot be divided. Or something. I usually figure stuff out sooner rather than later, but this still puzzles me to no end. One day… :D

Hey dude, nice video! in the middle instrumental section, there is a sense of metric modulation marking 4 on the ride cymbal while keeping a 12/8 half time feel shuffle which makes it tasty and very interesting , keep it up brpther.

Hey Tony, enjoyed your "reaction" and commentary on this. Often not the case with these types of videos. Nice to share this with an intelligent musical mind that gets just how extraordinary this s**t is. This is a masterpiece of a cover and the arranger of it is legendary, whoever that is. Someone like Jacob Collier comes to mind. Anyway, I just revisit this and other posts of Dirty Loops to get the max hit of technical execution and precision, incredible arrangements and absolutely blow mind production. Doesn't get any better than this...how could it!

Two things the horn you're referring to is a Double bell euphonium and these guys were so tight and at the time of this recording the musicians on Corey's side had never met Dirty Loops in person. This was recorded independently in Minneapolis-Corey and crew and Stockholm, Sweden-Dirty Loops. How is that for just sick skills?

As far as I know the horn arrangement is written by the trombone player. Vocal arrangements is written by the singer. Most of the horns (not Grace Kelly) are Princes old horn section ..

You gotta hear him live. The video's good, but he is classically trained and don't put him behind a piano and let him sing. They were so good live, I almost crapped my pants. Live they have one additional keyboardist that is badder than all of them. The best concert I have ever seen and I got to meet them in Dallas, TX. I am so glad they got away from David Foster. He had no ide what to do with them. Quincy had them now and he is letting them fly. That's what you get when Quincy gets a hold of them.

Jonah Nilson, lead singer and he studied theory at the Swedish Conservatory of Performing Arts so changes are, he is the aranger, with Quicy overseeing the whole shabang now. They are the youngsters gleening from the master so everything is amped. That is Jonah all the way. It's like taking off in a spaceship.

I strongly suggest you to check Tool band. Great drum feels, very noticeable bass lines, tempo changes, polyrhythmics.. you can find there everything. Start with 'The Pot', 'Schism' or 'Pneuma' (last one is live with camera set on a drummer, Danny Carey )

He is one bad brother and I can say, he is the nicest young man. He stopped and had a converstion with my daughter when she was 7 years old. This is a certain flavor of reaction and a valuable one. You do well in highlighting the true genius of these mad lads. To take on perhaps the most hallowed pop song of all time, make it distinctly yours and create something additive without drastically altering the pop tone… it’s not something very many, if any, musicians can pull off. They did, and honored Stevie Wonder in the process. Also I wonder whether they wanted to nod to ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’ when framing the cover in the shuffle feel. Another commenter is correct, it's a double bell euph. They're cool looking but outside of extremely specific unaccompanied solo pieces it's kinda pointless because the difference in timbre between the bells is so minor it would be drowned out by the ensemble. Seems more like a flex on the players part because that horn is probably 80+ years old and crazy expensive.
