I must add though, that Quincy Jones had nothing to do with the actual production of this. He's just the manager of Dirty Loops, and they produce everything themselves, together with Simon Petrén (and in this case also Cory Wong, obviously). They've even said , in interviews, that they don't send Quincy Jones anything, not even demos, until they're all finished, video and all. They're just that ridiculously competent (and Jonah actually has a university degree in music production, iirc:). Jonah is also the one mostly responsible for the spicy chord progressions in this group. :)

the solo pattern at the end is always so wild. Displaced by a eighth rest, 3 groups triplet 16th to a group of 5 triplet 16ths, group of 6, group of 5 then round it out with 9 again and end with a quarter note or something dumb like that LOL

Coming from more of a metalhead perspective who was also a "band geek" what stands out to me is the horns always being perfectly in sync, and the mix of the crispness of the stacatto and the feel of the bass, guitar and drums with that funky almost jazz feel. It mixes so well in contrast to each other.

I’ve been drumming/percussion for 15 years and playing professionally for almost a decade…most people just don’t…no I shouldn’t say don’t. They just simply can’t appreciate the talent inside that room and what’s taking place for that 5 minutes or however long it is lol.

Ive watched this video many times and never realized what a good time the drummer was having. He was smiling and having the time of his life in the second half of the song. Awesome reactions as always. Pay no mind to those who say to stop rewinding.

The bass effect is a 2 octave up pitch shift. Very reminiscent of Justin Chancellor on Lateralus (just higher on the bass). In my opinion one of the most under utilized bass effects. Great reaction as always Tony!

Re the effect on the bass solo: Eventide H9 in "whammy pedal" mode, with a generic expression pedal plugged into it to control the whammy.

Great reaction. Again. :) I don't know the order they recorded in during this collab, but Dirty Loops normally record a rough keyboard sketch first, then drums, then the rest of the keyboards and last the bass. Not sure where the vocals come into that though, whether they put that on with the keys or if it's the last thing they add. And the only one who actually goes into a proper studio to record sound is the drummer. Henrik and Jonah do all their recordings from home or the rehearsal space.

1.) Henrik is always running some sort of auto wah/envelope sweeping effect on his bass rig (a Bassballs or something of that ilk) but the wicked high overtones on the bass solo I am fairly certain were provided by a Whammy Pedal. 2.) Cory Wong has the best damn right hand in the business and I will be walking into my studio to practice when I'm done typing this. 3.) How in the actual f do they all climb so deep into that pocket after that intro? Cheers from down the street on a (finally) beautiful ass day in Seattle. And as always Go Hawks!

Dane, 🤣 Yeah, Henrik talks a fair bit about his bass setups on various YT interviews and chats. I’m not a bass player, but still find it super interesting, and I guess if I were, even more so… then there also is the Wong Notes podcast with Cory interviewing Henrik and them talking about, -amongst many other things-, specifically about the making of this album. And yes, Cory is such a badass rhythm guitarist… 🔥

Dude, 100% agree, if only Dirty Loops was on Top 40. they have the mainstream sound to catch ears but also they blow the musicianship out of the water. Killer technical insight in your reaction video as always, you catch so much other stuff that most reaction videos don't, always appreciate that. Also, the flow of your videos is very easy to watch, you have a knack for pausing at the right moments, rewinding and describing in a concise and economical way without slowing down the video too much. Always gonna throw another suggestion out there just in case you're in the market for more stuff -- Luke Holland is another insane metal drummer (up there with Matt Garstka) who has a heavy background in drum core/drum line. 'Tendinitis' or the new track 'Upside Down' are great examples! Cheers!

The peddle is for the bass guitar to interchangeable to a blend lead guitar. I’m an old musician. We use to use that in concerts. It takes the music always to the next level. It’s like having to instrument in one. God luck & continue to encourage & enjoy..

The pedal that Hendrik was using to get that effect on his bass solo is a pitch shifting whah pedal. It both performs a whah function while also bending the pitch up to 2 octaves above the actual note being played. Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani also uses one of these pedals on some of his instrumental tunes.

At 8:17! 🤣 Dirty Loops just do that to you, and this collab with Cory Wong is so dope! First they hit you with one thing, then straight after with another… And the idea that all of this was created via zoom, emails and FaceTime, makes it even doper in my eyes. There is an interesting podcast on Wong Notes, with Cory interviewing Henrik Linder-. Grace Kelly’s stank face -yes, absolutely! ;) check her out on YT as well, she’s a great musician! Really loved the detail of your analysis and the level of your appreciation, Tony. The track “Turbo” from the same collaboration could be a great next reaction! 👍

Add on: an educated guess at the last two bars of Henrik’s solo: he’s playing 16th sextuplets while Aron is accentuating every third quaver. (Oh god, I could be so wrong but hey….) 😉

yeah, my favorite track also. I see you pick up on a little thing I love in this song: Henrik with the triplets and the slap, but the contrast of the end of phrase where he just plays legato notes (still fast, but even volume envelope, no attack etc....on cello would be all in one bow) is a nice bit of nourishment for me.

Hearing a room full of virtuoso musicians like this is the very definition of a gestalt……i.e, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Tony, I believe you may be the only one to notice or comment on the fact that Jonah's keyboard work was nearly note for note what the other band members were playing. This is even more apparent in Turbo.

Hey thinkman, yeah exactly what Jonah was saying too in one of his interviews, that the nice thing about playing music together is that it can become so much more than the sum of its parts -and mind you, those parts in themselves aren’t shabby, either :) And re that doubling of other parts on synth: true. Simon Petrén who mixes and masters Dirty Loops’ tracks, said a few interesting things about that in two YT interviews I saw-. 👍

Cory Wong spoke on how they did at least some of the songs. He said he sent Dirty Loops a demo of some of the songs and they built the rhythm section on to the songs and sent them back to him and he and his band did the rest. But as far as who records what when in Dirty Loops, the way they used to do it may not be the way they do it now. From what I understand, Henrik records his bass parts last on their own music because it's easier for him to figure out how to fit in his parts in the empty spaces or whatever.

Yeah, that's how I've understood how they did the four songs that Cory Wong came up with (Turbo, Ring of Saturn, Zap, and Hardtop). Follow the Light, Thriller, and Hästråtta, which were the ones DL contributed with, were- as far as I understand - songs that DLhad already written the most of already before the collab came up, but don't quote me on that, as i can't for the life of me remember in which interview/podcast I heard that. :)

@@JamilaGomez82 Häst means horse, and råtta means rat, so Horserat. Which isn't actually a word in Swedish. They're being silly again, hahaha. I (and probably a few others) suggested to Jeff Castanon (Stratele Studios) that he ask Jonah, and he did, but Jonah didn't have an answer either (I have a vague memory of a comment about that - I'll check). They are such goofs. :D

This is what Jeff wrote: "Hi gang…was just chatting with Jonah about the meaning of “Hästråtta” and he said it simply means Horse-Rat with no deeper meaning. Henrik came up with the name! I think I read somewhere that Henrik is the last to record his part. The synth parts (with mock bass and drums) and vocals come first, then Aaron records the drum part, then Henrik records the bass part to lock in everything. But after rehearsals, it’s sounds exactly like the recording when they play live.

Welcome to the DL rabbit hole 😀 . Next level musicians that play what they like and want... their level of expression has awaken my own hunger for musical growth.. One can be so bored, with all mainstream music nowdays... I've been a musician for forty some years and way to lazy with practicing for the last 20.. but after hearing them for the first time, about 10 years ago, the practice pad has been taking some serious punishment again 😀. May I suggest you listen to "Breakdown" or an older one, called "Hit me"! Would be nice to see your musical reaction to these masterpieces.

I love the Loops and I love this song. Your reaction, comments and your obvious enjoyment just added another veneer of joy to what was already a sensational reaction. Good stuff. I'm just one fan and I'll probably tick off a few people by saying this but I assume the other song you're referring too is "Rings of Saturn"? If so it's -to me at least- a much more meditative energy level. If you're looking for another rocker from this session I'd recommend "Turbo". Everybody is flying high though no vocals. r

Good afternoon DrumRollTony. Your reaction to Dirty Loops and Cory was soooo funny, yes i know, they do that often to you 😁 Lol. The thing now days in music " not all music " is. It is entertainers, they are performing the music. Taking away the shine from the musicians and not musician becoming entertainers. If you know what i mean. Side note..... Lot of times Aron ( drummer ) and jonah ( vocals and keyboards) writes, arange, compose the music togehter, from horn section to background vocals.

All three of them write their music. On the Phoenix album the majority of the stuff is written by Aron and Henrik, but they write together in pairs, in all constellations, and often one song have different parts written by different pairs, so to speak.

I saw them live a week ago and they were amazing!! I think you need to check out “turbo” since you listen a lot to the horn section and you can’t miss out on “coffee break is over”! You’ll just have to listen all of their songs…

For me, there's nothing not to like about this track. The insane arrangement, the tight ensemble playing, sprinkle in the various embellishments, the whole damn thing is great. I've love to have the multi-track and be able to solo various parts, especially the horns. It's a great track indeed.

The effect on the first part of the bass solo is the whammy pedal. Can't figure out the time signature, but the duration is over 2 measures of 4/4. There are 3 measures of groups of 9, like a 9/32 time signature (the snare hits on every 5th beat), but then there is a 4th measure tag of 12 beats, like a 4th measure of 12/32. If they are 32nd notes, that math does not add up to 64 32nd notes in two measures of 4/4, that's 3 too many beats. So I don't know...(!)

IF I don't pay strict attention to everything that's going on here, and just listen to the overall feel and sound -- it's a dance-able pop song. But once you zero in on the details -- in all the instruments and arrangement sections -- it's a progressive jazz song masquerading as a pop song. It's simply incredible.

No green screen, as far as I've understood it. They filmed it individually, with Dirty Loops in Stockholm, Sweden, and Cory and the horns in Minneapolis, US. Aron, the drummer of Dirty Loops, edited the films together. Cory talks a bit about it in his podcast (Wongnotes), in the episode where he has Henrik Linder as his guest. :)

I've listened to that episode a few times to see what I'm missing. The making of the videos isn't mentioned at all in that episode. Only the recording of the songs.

@@concurrentvulgaire9764 He talks about how he and Aron worked out all the details of the cameras and gear just at the beginning, before Henrik Linder comes on mostly, Can't remember if he talks about it after Henrik comes on though. I have to admit that I might have heard something about it in some of the Swedish interviews/podcasts as well, but I can't remember where. If you look carefully you can see, in the shots where you see the whole band, how Henrik's shadow is cut off where the rugs meet, where the films are put together. Also, in Thriller you can actually see parts of the studio behind Dirty Loops at times, so there's definitely no green screen behind them, but yeah, I guess that doesn't say anything about what's behind Cory and the Horns, and if they have a green screen behind all those lights. I have little to no knowledge about actual film editing, so I can only repeat what I've heard them say themselves, and as far as I've understood it, it's actually separate films stitched together (as you can see, I don't even have the terminology for this duscussion, hahaha) down the middle, in the few shots where all of them are shown simultaneously. :)
