The way that you sit changes your emotions! This is such a helpful way that this science can improve the life of a musician, everyone should be aware and experiment with the concept.

wow, thanks drumeo and John Lamb. I've been playing drums for over 5yrs in church. Had to stop due to multiple surgeries to my lumbar spine. To anyone and everyone, please pay attention to this video. I would slouch all the time. This is definitely gonna change the way I see drumming and the way I teach drumming. Thank you soo much!!

"the seat the feet and the hands." Drummer ergonomics are rarely spoken of in any detail. Nice that Mr. Lamb touched on this. Being 6'5" tall I'm always interested in sitting behind my instrument with the most comfort and ease of movement. Well placed information.

My wife and I recently moved from Asheville NC to Orlando FL and we are staying with her aunt. He aunt lost her twenty year old son to cancer in November of 2015. He was a drummer and was in a band. I have always wanted to learn to play drums but I have never had the means to start. My wife's aunt said she would be honored if I learned to play on her son's drums. I am always watching drumming tutorials preparing for when I get to start learning. My favorite part of this video was learning how to sit properly. I am 6'3" and my wife always gets on to me about my posture. I know this will save me a lot of trouble and fatigue as I am learning. Thank you so much for your videos and keep up the great work.

It's such a terrific (and too often overlooked) subject to touch on. I've read some in depth articles on posture in the past and John really breaks this down nicely. It's amazing how many of us slouch, even if just a little, without noticing it. Great job.

I'm now in my late 50's and have been drumming for about 40 years. By body doesn't move as easily as it used to for many reasons. But if I had been taught this from the beginning I'm sure it would have made a difference. Anatomy of the body, pertaining to any instrument, should be taught to some degree from the very beginning, even a trumpet player can learn from this! Thank you John and thank you DRUMEO for this. I'm definitely checking out the book. Oh, and I like the idea of practicing taking up your space for the mental reasons. That's great!

I'm following up on my own comment: At a show we did last Saturday night I tried adjusting my posture and being mindful of how my limbs, hands and feet reacted. The difference was subtle but very powerful. My muscles stayed loose, and executing figures was easier. These tips really work! Thank you John and Drumeo for a great lesson.

I had terrible back and neck problems and all the time it was the throne. I got one that didn't make me feel like I was slipping forward, and that caused the problem. So now I get ones that do make me feel like I'm slipping forward and they make me sit up straight and face forward. And no more problems.

Definitely. There are a lot of terrible seats out there ... starting with all those molded plastic seats you find in schools. Some thrones, like the fancier Tama thrones are designed to tip you slightly forward... bad in general but is a band-aid for a slouching posture. I had one for a long time and was happy with it until I started studying movement. I'm super happy with the Roc n Soc motorcycle seat thrones now.

John really opened my eyes as to how my sitting position matters more than just "being comfortable" on the chair. and especially the heel down technique. For years it bugged me that I wasn't able to play heel down comfortably, and now it all makes sense! I loved the explanation about the amigdalas, it's fascinating just how quickly instincts, thoughts and such can pass through our minds and we don't even recognise or identify them before they have slipped away. The mind and body are an amazing combination... Thank you Drumeo and thank you John for an amazing and insightful lesson!

great lesson !! I totally love this kind of stuff. Once i was told by my music teacher at school that as a drummer "you have to be able to play even with a bad posture". He was referring to as we play using someone else's kit. Of course the height of the drum throne is different, the angle of the snare, toms and etc are different from our own kit. And until today I never 100% believe in what my teacher said. I do believe we can play with a weird posture/sitting position, but I believe there's a limit for it. Once again, great lesson. Thanks to Drumeo team and John Lamb for this lesson :) Cheers from Indonesia

Really cool approach to drumming! Something like two or three years ago I decided to work on ambidextrous exercises for the drumset. Two reasons for this; 1 I avoid crossing my arms because crossing my arms makes me feel like my shoulders and spine roll forward, 2 I remember learning about the Corpus Callusum in my senior year of highschool psychology. The Corpus Callosum is the part of the brain that allows the L/R hemispheres to communicate. I thought that teaching my hands and feet to cross communicate would strengthen my creativity and coordination. Will Kennedy from The Yellow Jackets, Simon Phillips from The Who, Mike Smith from Suffocation.

Learning about how your posture affects your playing was a great thing to learn about especially at a youngish age. Sometimes I see people who have terrible posture and how it affects their lifestyle the same way it will affect your playing. And even just raising your seat height a few centimetres can greatly affect your playing or play style

I appreciated the need for listening to your body and incorporating the various techniques to your drum playing. Sometimes French grip, sometimes German grip; Moeller grip applications very important for the groove aspects and ease of drum transitions were very helpful. Never looked at it from an ergonomic perspective. My favorite takeaway was the use of gravity using your feet. This has always been a question in my head for obtaining quick, and powerful strokes without choking the head. Thanks for a very informative lesson. looking forward to the next ones on this topic.
