Learn the real history behind three legendary films: “Dog Day Afternoon,” “A League of Their Own” and “Citizen Kane.”
About Drunk History:
Based on the popular web series, Drunk History is the liquored-up narration of our nation's history. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer. Booze helps bring out the truth. It's just that sometimes the truth is a little incoherent.

The part that sucks is that Citizen Kane was so much based off of Hearst that people assumed the untalented Susan Alexander was based off of Marian Davies. The truth was, Davies was really good on her own. If you see her comedies, she's hilarious. Welles had to defend Davies's reputation and that Alexander and Davies didn't resemble each other.

I'm not about government regulation, but it seems like we have a problem with single people or companies owning a large number of media companies.. That makes those companies/people way too influential. It feels like media companies should be in the hands of as many people as possible. I guess any regulation on that would be pretty intrusive but jeez.. Seems like they could use existing anti-trust/monopoly laws for that maybe... I mean, I have a political stance, but I am whole-heartedly against my beliefs being the only ones voiced and vice-versa. There's only one "truth" but an unlimited number of ways to spin it. Just thinking about that because of the Hearst guy owning so many newspapers...

@@anenemystand5582 not really a issue with capitalism government is what allows monopolies to form
@anenemystand5582
@anenemystand5582 4 жыл бұрын
@@amanrahmani2632 actually government is what stops monopolies. Monopolies are the end result of capitalism. They have appeared everytime regulation has weakened. It is, without exaggeration, capitalism working as intended
@amanrahmani2632
@amanrahmani2632 4 жыл бұрын
@@anenemystand5582 while monoplies can certainly form in capitalism its typically government how you get ineffective monopolies such as Microsoft in the early 2000s. due to things patents and copywrite . on its own monopies arent inhernitly bad as when one falters in a free market a replacement comes in and there's competion. its ineffective monopolies which are bad
@lilaredden
@lilaredden 4 жыл бұрын
@@amanrahmani2632 To help with the logic of @An enemy stand: The natural process of capitalism is that many Capitalists compete for market by providing a better product or a better price. In a 100% free market ultimately there is a "winner" who either has the best product, the best price, or the best leverage in the market. "Winning" for one company results in a decrease in market share of the loser and increase of the winner (admittedly a lining up of the means and the ends). However, as this market share grows, so too does maket influence and the relative cost necessary for any competitor seeking to compete with the new market leader. Over time this cycle repeats until there are no more competitors. In this state there is no longer any incentive for said market leader to innovate or offer good value as they can use their relationships with suppliers and vendors to shut out any competition. The only "sensible" solution is to join said company or be unable to find work in your field as well so even workforce for possible competition is restricted. While this can, in theory, be broken up by other market forces, the sort required are on the scale of paradigm shifts such as industrial revolution or the rise of computing technology. The great irony of both those being that government research and investment brought about both. Capitalism itself cannot exist without government force of law requiring a common currency and value or respect of contracts. Its why "free markets' are fantasy at best. If you could have them you wouldn't want them anyway. However, if you need some government for it to work, market participants will always to seek to manipulate every lever at their disposal to "win". As such, government becomes such a lever and competitors will seek to use government power to benefit them. If the government lacks said power they will endeavor to give it those powers. Ultimately the levers of power in government regardless of type, are wielded by someone. In Capitalism, Capitalists know that if it is not them it will be either an Autocrat, the Military, the Church (stand-in for any given religion), or the People. Autocrats can be assassinated or undermined, Military can be bargained with, the Church can be tailored to, the People though they can only try to mollify. While certainly some people may have lax ethics, most Capitalists do or would do these things, not because they're evil but because they're the logical courses of action left to them given a Capitalist structure. A very wasteful structure at that. TLDR: Monopoly is the natural end state of Capitalism with or without government.

I actually met, I can’t remember if it was Helen or Marge from ‘A League Of Their Own’ (after being introduced once I wasn’t going to ask a second time) in a freaking dive (total dive) cigar bar shortly after the film came out! She actually came in regularly, never lighting up stogie herself (she said she just liked to sit in the smoke, go figure, and talk to the boys!) She had amazingly detailed stories from the era! You could easily see why her story simply had to be a film! She was one of the sweetest, smartest, most gracious, people I’ve ever met!

I've seen this guy that looks just like Mel Brooks in a lot of these episodes. It CAN'T be him, Mel is like 80 something by now. Does anyone know who this guy is?
