you shave off the layer thats dirty with a razor, never get them wet

Can I use that on upholstery? My livingroom ceiling collapsed in my apartment and my landlord did not bother with cleaning my furniture.

Good question. It will depend on the specific fabric and will require some experimentation. We use it with good success on bookcloth which has an even, more uniform weave. It might be worth a try to see if it works.
