A really easy step by step guide on how to clean and store your paper documents. Conservation for beginners.
Take a picture before and after you clean your document - see the difference and inspire others.
Materials needed:
Blotting Paper - pH neutral, highly absorbent thick paper
Wool felt - high density and smooth material. It's not essential, blotting paper is a good alternative
A soft brush - a natural bristle is best.
Pieces of Chemi-Sponge or Smoke sponge - made from vulcanized natural rubber
Bone Folder - a really useful multifunctional tool. Also available in vegan friendly material Teflon or PTFE
Weights - buy or make your own. Easier to use lots of smaller weights rather than one large weight.
Polyester Enclosure - Chemically inert and won't yellow with age. 75 microns is a good choice of weight for most documents.

Hi there, any tips on removing mold and mildew from handwritten documents like journals and diaries? I'm worried I'll clean it the wrong way and further damage it.

I'm surprised the archivist is not wearing any gloves because oils from their fingers are now on this paper....

Hi there, thank you for your comment. While gloves are recommended for handling certain types of materials (for example photographs or metal) or artefacts with hazardous materials present (such as mould or arsenic), oftentimes during conservation work, gloves can reduce tactile sensitivity, therefore making it more difficult for the conservator to accurately gauge the condition of the item and increasing the risk of further damage. Many professionals therefore prefer to work with dry, clean hands.

How convenient that the dirt marks on the paper can be brushed off - I'm sure nobody ever had a dried coffee, wine or food stain on a page of their book that they'd like to know how to remove. I don't think they can be brushed off can they?

Hi there, thank you for your comment. This video is meant to provide general guidance for community archives with a focus on light dry cleaning. The staining that you have mentioned may all require different cleaning materials and techniques, which will also be highly dependent on the type of paper that has been damaged. Our advice is that a professional conservator is always consulted, as many treatments require careful testing and knowledge of materials without which the object can be easily damaged.
