DRY FLY FISHING the Driftless - Finally get a dry fly bite (day 4)

It's day 4 and FINALLY, I'm DRY FLY FISHING the Driftless! The day starts at a pretty public area which I figured wouldn't be too busy since it was mid-week. However, I didn't realize the stocking truck was also visiting this stream. Not wanting to fish behind the recently stocked trout, I decided to try another new stream. It was way beyond my expectations. The day was simply incredible. Lots of fish taken on nymphs but after a one eats my indicator two times I tie on a never sink style caddis and find multiple fish willing to eat dries. Definitely was a great day of fishing that I'll never forget. See more from this series below and more destinations, NM, CO, WY on my channel!
Gear: Orvis Superfine Carbon 7.5' 3wt
Orvis Battenkill II reel
Orvis Pro Textured fly line
Dorsey yarn indicator Nymph -BH nymph shown in my community tab
Dry - Never sink style caddis

Nice! I was going to put a 6 hour drive in front of me tomorrow at 3am to head to Erie, PA for Steelhead...it could be a bust due to low water in the tributaries. Instead, after watching this, going to cut trip in half and fish the Yough River with dry flies.

There are some epic dry fly hatches here in Montana. You have the Trico hatch on the beaverhead and the salmon fly hatch on the yellow Stone. On the southfork of the flathead near my house the Caddis hatches in late August as well as the hoppers catch 20 inch cutthroat especially the closer you get or the deeper you get in to the Bob.

Awesome, love it. Wondering, were you using a single nymph? If you ever drift 2 nymphs, do you use a triple surgeons knot or do you tie directly to the bend of the hook. Thanks!
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 жыл бұрын
Started with 2, but they were locked on the top so I cut the other. I have a few ways of dropping a 2nd fly. If I'm using same size tippet I use a palomar and drop with the tag end (got a vid on this in my tips playlist). I try to go thru the eye to keep the 2nd fly from pulling the top and foul hooking fish...but when I do go off the bend, improved clinch.

The gopro has some stabilization built in. I don't do anything but cut the clips, maybe add some brightness to the talking head parts bc they are usually early or late and the lighting isn't great. Pretty much use the gopro as a grab and go camera...been really impressed with it.

Great video like always. I am super lucky that where I live, upstream dry fly is the standard. What is the challenge around catching fish off the surface? Do they just not rise readily or is there just an absence of insect life that hatches on the surface? Second question, In stocked streams like this, what is the ration of wild to stocked fish?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! So they take dries way more when they're more bugs hatching...it can be crazy in spring and summer. But it was late in the season and while some will rise, definitely have more success nymphing. To give you an idea, completely unscientific, I caught maybe 10 browns and probably 30ish bows. But each stream is different, the next Day 5...I caught nearly as many browns! Alot of these streams are in their infancy of development (easements with property owners). And the local TU has done a ton of work to establish fisheries and improve habitat! Its been really cool to watch the streams grow from mostly stocked fish to holding some wild fish.

Do you fish with barbless hooks on the fly? Recently fished some small ponds in South Dakota. It was sometimes difficult to remove the fly and a couple of fish could not be revived no matter how hard I tried. Any advice. New to fly fishing and always release the trout.
