TROUT OASIS - From the ROAD this stream DID NOT look impressive - IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE!

In this video, I'm exploring a tiny stream that didn't look super impressive from the road. However it turned out to be an oasis and packed with wild brown trout. It's the classic tiny stream that I've heard others comment, they'd walk past searching for bigger water! How you approach these gems is also super important...I stay off the ridges...keep low, often crouching...avoid the common casting areas. For example in one situation, I duck under a lay down rather than cross the ridge which would have spooked any fish in the pool! That technique has helped me regardless of the stream size or size of the fish that live in it! It seems like a lot of work but the reward of knowing it paid off can't be fully appreciated, until you've done it!

That duck under the fallen tree is a textbook approach for a small Driftless Area stream like this one. Avoid walking on the high banks and keep low. Trout can sense a large dark moving shadows from a surprising distance so always strive to keep your shadow off the water. I recognize that stream, it's not far from where I grew up. Those exposed limestone bluffs are key to prime Trout water in the Driftless. The limestone provides the proper PH level for reproduction and growth. When you see that aqua green tint in the water, it's usually good Trout water. Well done Drew!

I've had the orvis bugout system for most of the year. The front chest part that you saw is super handy when I wear waders and a waist pack. It allows me to carry tippet, floatant and several fly boxes in a easy to reach spot. The coolest part is it attaches to a backpack which I used during my 2 month road trip this summer. Just curious is the creek bottom soft an silty? Is it easy wading?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 жыл бұрын
It is soft and silted in some spots for sure. I generally try to stay out of the stream or on the edges, which isn't bad wading. I do prefer wet wading season, just b/c hiking and wading is easier. Try to avoid waders as much as possible!

What is the average distance between your indicator and your nymph?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 жыл бұрын
Really don't have an average...I guess or look at where the fish are and adjust as necessary. 1.5xdepth is a good place to start. I'm hesitant to say, 3ft b/c...unweighted flies fished with a sz 6 spit shot might only be a foot under the surface. Where a bh nymph and sz 4 split shot might be 2.5ft under water. The best advice I can give is fish a foot deeper than u think the depth is and add weight until you snag bottom...then remove some.

Will the fish always remain about that size in streams like this? o they need bigger water to grow larger?
@LooknFishy
@LooknFishy 3 жыл бұрын
Ime, has more to do with food, not stream size. A small stream with abundant, high quality and available bugs will produce big fish! This section of stream appeared to have some silting issues, which limits bug habitat. Another section a few miles away had some great quality! A good example, is my backpacking Wimineche CO video...small but had amazing quality fish!

@@leetreado3801 not sure the state, but this looks to be the drift less (or similar geography. I grew up in NE Iowa. We have some good fish, because we have some good food sources. Lots of limestone spring creeks. The key is to find areas not frequented or C&R. Caught my personal best Brown (21”) from a creek in NE IA. Didn’t even see/feel the strike, just saw the smaller fish explode from around where my bugger was and set. Miss the area, can’t wait to visit my parents and take my dad fishing.
