Dry Pack mortar or Deck Mud, as it is called in California, is an important step in the construction of a tile shower pan. For professionals it looks easy, but only because they have been doing it for so long. Often times beginners or DIY's struggle with low spots, crumbling, or uneven slope. That is why I have created this video that shows how to do it. By using these simple instructions there is almost no way to mess it up.
This video shows how to mix dry pack mortar, and create a ledger to screed off of to ensure proper slope and a solid smooth surface to waterproof and install tile on top of.
If you need more help on your tile project, go to tilecoach.com to find out how you can get 1 on 1 tile coaching for your project. www.tilecoach.com/book-online

Scares me how many "tile guys" are yelling "DON'T SCREW INTO THE SHOWER PAN!" As an installer we should know that there are different methods available now and should be able to recognize that he's using a top sealed method with no pre-slope or pan liner. I understand the average diyer not being up to date with our practices (Isaac is doing his best) but come on installers, we need to do more to educate ourselves within our trade.

Just a homeowner and diyer here, just commented under someone else's comment who was doing just that, I felt the need to make sure other homeowners understood this, scares me that I would see that and a "professional" wouldn't😂

So is this a method without using vinyl sheets over the walls and floors? How do you seal everything? Is there a website describing this method? We are trying to fix our shower and contractors are scarce. The ones who are answering are super expensive, as there is apparently a lot of demand in Florida. This training wheels method is the best we have found for getting the proper slope on the floor and we would like to try it. Do we do this over the vinyl sheets or do the vinyl sheets go over this? Lots of questions.

@@isaacholzwarth Thank you. Wandering around the TileCoach vids, I found where he sealed the deck mud with Hydro Ban to make it waterproof. Now I'm looking for an answer about how to put cement board on the walls will a concrete floor. Apparently, that is a bad idea, but no one says what to do where the cement board and concrete floor meet.
@isaacholzwarth
@isaacholzwarth 2 жыл бұрын
@@steveaustin2686 hmmm. I'm not certain about that, I haven't heard that. I do know that depending on code in your area you can use drywall behind kerdi (and I believe the others like hydroban as well) although I've never loved the idea. That's why I'm going to use go board instead, it's already waterproofed so I don't have to use kerdi, and it's really light. Good luck with your project!

I have changed my technique over the years changing with the new methods. Every time I watch one of your videos and see yet another way to do it, I think “maybe I should do it that way?” Nice to learn something new/different. Never seen anyone mix deck mud that way.

I really appreciate all the information you put out there I’m a general contractor north of you in Oregon Washington. I am not a tile guy, but I have been doing tile for quite some time. I have learned a lot from your videos. In fact, I went down to Eureka California did a shower for a friend of mine. He was actually my roommate in college and I think I may go back and pull the bench out. They haven’t had a problem but I don’t want them to have a problem in the future and I think I may have done something wrong so I may just go pull it out make sure and re-tile it I don’t want them to have a failure. The pan liner was done right I know that because I watched your videos and make sure it was done correctly so I appreciate all the information to bring love to learn new things. I really don’t wanna do tile it’s not what I do but it’s another skill to put in the toolbox big jobs I sub out to my tile guy. We only do the small jobs. Appreciate you

I have used that technique years ago before I get my skills sharpened it will work way smoother is you make the notch against the wall 1/8 shorter that will make your screed action way faster also I would recommend the beginners start packing the drain and the ledger first then poor the cement that will avoid cracks along the walls and around the drain and the last tip I can share is to finish the floor nice and smooth the easer way is sprinkle some of the dry mix you use and a wood float I have different sizes but you can always cut the wood float is nice to have different sizes so works easier depending on the sloop you are building and after you can use a 6 inches metal thrower to finish off and clean the edges

As a DIY'er, I sid a couple showers with a quick pitch style method with the weep style drain. The problems I had with the screening off the old plastic stick method was irregular shapes of wide spacing. I would create dips or humps and of course not being straight horizontally at the wall when tiling. This time I upgraded to this flofx drain and this method for making a pan.. I feel much better with the results even with a now larger shower and irregular shapes. It was cheaper, easier and allowed me to have a lower curb. I'm happy I bought my drain and tile leveling tools from your store.

Thank you Isaac. I like to think I'm a pretty good DIY'er. I have flipped several houses but installing a mud bed shower pan felt a little out of my league. I watched around 100 of your videos which are the best on KZfaq. This one in particular caught my attention. Installing a new bath at my house, I used my laser level to scribe a level line at the top of the curb and followed the directions in the video. In my case, the FlowFX drain ended up being 1-inch above the floor and the perimeter line was at 1.75-inches. I was extremely nervous being my first time and as I was by myself and didn't know how much time I had to work the mud. I also didn't know if I had enough deck mud. I mixed 4-50 lb bags and hoped for the best. I had made 2 screeds, 1 short for the sides and one long one for the corners. At first I was freaking out because it is definitely not as easy as I thought it would be. I took a few breaths and went to work. The first thing I realized I wasn't very good with the wood float. It just seemed to make a mess when I tried to make circles. But the closer I got to correct level, I started to get the feel for it. I worked at it for a while using the screeds. Flattened with the wood float, and then final finish with the steel trowel. As it turned out, I used the full 4-50lb bags. There was less than a handful left at the end. The final outcome was fantastic and I look forward to installing the waterproofing and tile. My only recommendation is to make sure you have enough mud. Way better to have too much then find out you need more. Thanks again for your fantastic videos.

Very cool. I am going to do my shower in the next day or two. It is a 3’x6’ shower. I like the training wheels.
