Context of the mv:The girl goes to a place where she should not go .She wants to learn music from the lady in that palace who is singing in the 1st part.She goes and asks for how much (value)will the lady teach her to sing like that.But the lady responds saying that music does not have any written value and asks her to come tomorrow again,then the lady will decide to teach her or not.Thr lady resides in the secluded part of the city where people like the girl are not allowed tk go.But she goes there anyways.The boy at the end is the singing lady's son who is so mesmerized by the girl's voice that he followed her all the way to the palace.The girl leaves because the boy is a mere stranger and she is married(they do end up together in the end though).Also many mythological references in the song.

The whole theatrical act in the song is basically a depiction of Ramayana, one of the greatest epics from India. It is based on the story of lord ram and thus, has not only cultural but also religious significance. The most fascinating scene for me in this song was that of Jatayu, the bird who tries to save lord Ram's wife, Sita ji from being abducted by Ravana, who cuts his wings and puts him to sleep forever. You should check out a summary of the story for better context of the act and honestly, it's a very intriguing story with many layers to it. In context of the movie in which this song was, the woman in white marries a man due to some circumstances but wants to learn singing and goes out to the forbidden area where the other lady(teacher/guru) resides to request her to accept her as a student.

The older woman who is singing (legendary actress madhuri dixit known for her amazing dancing and acting) teaches song and the other girl has come to learn. The people on the older womans side are muslim, her and her son at the end. And the girl and her family are hindu. The women who are dancing and stuff are basically courtesans. So, the woman at first is like "theres a little less salt and in raag you need to live a seasoned life". And the girl is like "and if theres too much salt, life becomes bitter. I want to learn song. I am ready to pay any price". The older woman then says "our music is so grand that you can't put a price on it. You're married? We have a saying. That once the burning fire is out the fire from within is out forever". So the girl answers "I've come to reignite that blown out fire. Please don't let me go back hopeless". then the woman who works for the family shes married into says "its getting late we should head back", the older woman is like "you work for Chaudhry right?" (she basically had an affair with him years ago and they had a illegitimate son, the guy at the end). Then she asks the girl "does your household know that you're here?" And shes like "yes they know". So the older woman says "come tomorrow i will hear your voice again and if I like it again i will teach you. Khuda hafiz" (it means may god be with you. Basically bye. muslims say that) So yeah thats what they're saying lol. The guy at the end is like I've heard courtesans singing for years but i've never heard a voice like yours. more than pain i hear love in your voice. Bla bla. And hes like I'm zafar. And she just walks off like okay weirdo. So if you watch that bit back you'll know what they're talking about

Lol I am late today maybe you won't read the comment but as always enjoyed a lot. Now I couldn't help as always and here with some few background informations 1. The conversation is between them is about the girl wants to learn Music from the older lady. But the place is a Brothel. In India brothel ladies are extremely trained in Music and Dancing at that era, the era shown here is before 1950s. But the girl was already a married lady of a prestigious family which made the older lady quite unwanting to teach her. Also the background theatre story is on Ramayana, which is a scripture of Hinduism/Sanatana Dharma. It is a whole story, if you like Anime from Japan there's an anime movie on Ramayana you can check it out. You will know the whole story. They are celebrating Dussehra, this is celebrated by burning statue of Ravana(the villain of Ramayana) I won't give spoilers. So do check out the movie you wanna know. 2. Now one of the singers in this song is SHREYA GHOSHAL, she is a Legend for us. But she is known Globally, in Ohio people celebrates SHREYA GHOSHAL DAY every year. 3. The beat you were enjoying is made with an Indian instrument called Tabla. Hence the beats of the rhythm can't be achieved by drums. Its an interesting instrument. 4.
