Around Diwali (festival of lights) and Dashehra times ,public performances of Ram leela (depiction of the entire life of Lord Ram) are hosted on stage everywhere. Especially in North India. While it's a performance on stage that public watches as a seated audience, in this song the filmmakers have taken artistic liberties and made it larger than life ...As if it's a big performance happening where the village itself is the stage and it's a life size show which people are watching as they move along. Alia is also one of the audiences. Zafar is too. So you see them crossing each other but they meet only towards the end. Madhuri ia singing and teaching her students and since it's a day of Ram leela she is also singing a song that s depicting the homecoming of Lord Ram. It automatically adda content to the whole setting. Alia hears her voice at one point and leaves the performance happening on the street, takes the boat and walks towards the brothel. She manages to convince madhuri to teach her how to sing. Madhuri is already impressed by her voice . On her return, she sees zafar climbing the steps and gets attracted to him. But she s a married woman already. The effigy burning at the end is part of the still on going ram leela where at the end the effigy of Ravan is burnt to indicate the end of the war that happened between Ram (lord of truth) and Ravan (lord of evil) and ram kills ravan. The festival is celebrated to pronounce the idea that the truth is always supreme. The rest of the movie is set in the pre partition era where you won't see these mythological characters. The guy in blue is Lord Ram who is considered as one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu.

Lol at your comment regarding Madhuri. Don’t get it either. She’s so lovely and elegant in these so I don’t why they always give her that role.

Do react to other songs from Kalank. Especially Madhuri's dance number Tabah ho gaye which also explores the mother-son dynamic between her and Varun.

If you haven't already, I recommend the song Jagaave Saari Raina from the movie Dedh Ishqiya. Compared to this song, it's very simple and low-key, but also very charming with a more classical feel.

'KALANK' was and is a disaster. I watched the film, but I was confused by the plot, and by the end of the film, I couldn't care which era they were in. The words 'GHAR MORE PARDESIYA' = 'Come Home Stranger/Lover', but in the context of this scenario, the same wording could also mean 'COME HOME ESTRANGED LOVER', and this probably encapsulates the storyline between Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt's characters, as they had a 'love child', and then they became strangers, so there's a deeper meaning being conveyed through the song. And often Madhuri is seen pining for her 'estranged lover' (Sanjay Dutt), so there are some unresolved feelings between those characters, and unfortunately this plot line never thickened, or simmered, it just withered away into the background. I didn't enjoy Alia Bhatt's performance in 'KALANK' - it was style over substance, as was the entire film. Hence the film failed at the box office. Many criticised the director saying he was trying hard to be the next 'Sanjay Leela Bhansali', and I have to say I agree with this verdict. The screen just looked too busy, and I didn't know where to focus, or who to focus on - too many characters, and some were unnecessary. As for the grandeur of the film, it completely killed any appetite I had left for grandeur! Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan have been overly hyped by the media and the industry alike, and that's not always a great position to be in, because then the stakes are raised, and the pressure mounts, and your film choices not only become limited, but they become subjective. They heavily promoted this film together, and it completely backfired on them. The audience was outraged by the fact that Madhuri Dixit was given such little screen presence in the film, even though she had a bolstering storyline, but that was never fully explored. People felt cheated. And the scenes she did appear in, as you can imagine, she was just pure magic. Her eyes, her expressions, and dialogue beautifully conveyed the heartache she felt and lived with for all those years pining away for her estranged lover. She is and will always be ethereal. Okay 'KALANK' rant over :)

@@AvaniVee OTT production allows the showcasing of fine craftsmanship, art and aspirations of producing big numbers. But I think screenplay should not have suffered. We have great artists but the producers and directors are MEDIOCRE!

@@bobinpune Yeah, I don't think it's always necessary to go over board with production values, because you can tell the same story with a simple aesthetic too. In the case of 'KALANK', the intention was to produce something grand, but as we've both pointed out that doing so means you have to compromise somewhere, and so for that reason, I do think you need to find a balance between storytelling and production values 😀
@bobinpune
@bobinpune 2 жыл бұрын
@@AvaniVee I don't think any compromise was necessary. Just get rid of some garbage overacting and trim the bloated screenplay and you have a winner!
