It's unfortunate there isn't more of an in-depth interview with Marc Alaimo in the doc itself. He was such an integral part of the show that it would have been bland and colorless without him. Behr didn't seem to give him the credit he deserved, even in this documentary. Perhaps someday, people beyond his small, but loyal fanbase will recognize his greatness and give him the credit he truly deserves.

Behr wanted a straight Nazi allegory. He HATED how popular Dukat was with the fanbase. Poor Marc bore the brunt of that. It's similar to Whedon jumping all over Marsters when the Buffy fans fell in love with Spike. I'll say it again: if you want a two dimensional villain, don't hire a great actor.

Great actor Mark Alaimo. So underated. I absaloutly loved him as Gul Dukat. DS9 was filled with wonderful actors. I always remember when Dukat and Kira were on a mission together whare they found zihal, Dukat's daughter in a breen labour camp. The part whare kira and Dukat are in the caves resting and Dukat gets a big splinter in his backside. They both end up laughing there heads off as Dukat is jumping around trying to get it out. I always thought part of that was real laughter and it was kept in the final take. Brilliant.

Actors of his era (I'm guessing character actors especially) may also not have been properly taking care of their voices with like rest and tea and stuff because information on that was probably not widely accessible. @ Rick Berman was a producer throughout the “TNG era”. Prior to Paramount hiring him for Trek he’d only produced a children’s show. Additionally, many people blame him for some of the treatment of women on the set, and for slightly regressive attitudes in writing in that era. For instance Denise Crosby partially blames Berman for her wanting to leave so early. (If you fancy watching some videos about it, Jessie Gender did a video about the treatment of women in Trek a year or two ago; and there’s also a video called “Berman Trek” by Renegade Cut.)

One of the finest actors Ive seen. I can count on one hand the number of actors who've been able to pull of a "villain" that also in certain episodes elicits empathy and sadness for the character. Not easy to do, the writing has to be good, but the acting, for it to be believable across the arc of the character, well that has to be impeccable. The other notable mention in that regard though not trek related, is Zod from Man of Steel. I forget the actors name, but he too was masterful in that way in that role.

Met him in the hotel bar. Back then, Trek fans were NOT drinkers, which gave my friends and I an easy in, since most of the actors were. Anyway, he's a really nice guy: optimist and Harley enthusiast (we did NOT talk about trek; I don't think he'd have stayed if we had). The documentary did him a real disservice. Clearly Ira Behr never forgave him for making his bad guy so damned charismatic and popular with the fans. (Ira, if you want a flat, two-dimensional villain, don't hire a great actor!!)

That's because in the first four seasons he was written to be an antihero on the road to redemption. But when the head writer saw in the online chat rooms all the love that was being praised on him, the head writer didn't like that. So he changed the character to be an evil joke instead. But by that time we were already all enamored with him so we couldn't hate him if we tried. I thought that was really messed up what they did to his character and his storyline.

2 odd things here. The camera was shooting over MA’s shoulder, not in front of him. Also, he says he told Avery -it’s okay to hit him. He says, “Hit me. It’s okay.” It all doesn’t make sense.

dukat and garak carries big parts of this show as to not being one of the main cast.. Marc is just brilliant. Maybe he was too good fot the show at the time.. All credit to him for that role. What an actor. I never met him, but he seems nice and a bit goofy even. :). Love you Marc.

I never really understood all the religion and the end of Dukat's and Sisko's storylines, but as I grew older and rewatched it a few more times... I now completely understand, and that elevates this show to beyond a 10/10. Waltz is one of my favorite episodes too, Mr. Alaimo did a fantastic job
@bobo577
@bobo577 Жыл бұрын
@Samar3n I’ve almost finished DS9 but the way I see it, Dukat hasn’t changed and what better way for him to get control of Bajor or destroy it is by servicing essentially the false gods of the Bajorans, start a cult and using that to bring Bajorans under his authority. He even admits his hatred of the Bajorans to Sisko in Waltz. I’d say that is pretty consistent with how Dukat was introduced and later on, that he is a charismatic and narcissistic tyrant.

And not used nearly as much as he should have been. He shouldn't have been changed from an antihero into a evil caricature. And he should have also I think became one of the regular cast members eventually. It's clear in this documentary and in other videos of Ira and Marc together that Ira does not like Marc and never gave him the respect that he should have given him.

Not the purpose of this video, so I'm not sure how this came up, but..they test-screened her with the TNG Trill makeup and it just didn't look great for so many reasons. Rubber prosthetic alien-of-the-week doesn't always make for a good main castmember. So they went with Famke Janssen's Kriosian spots instead. I think it was a good call.

The original Trills didn't have spots, they changed the look for Terry after Paramount executives watched the dailies of Terry Farrell in DS9 pilot "Emissary", they issued a rare ultimatum about the Trill make-up scheme. The executives insisted the make-up be changed via removal of the forehead markings; having spent a long time seeking a beautiful actress for the role of Dax, Paramount wanted to avoid Farrell being defaced by prosthetics.
