I tested the yamaha hs7 and the focal alpha 65 evo in my home office at once. And the yamaha was more detailed and clear in the mids and highs. The bass is also very clear. For someone the HS7 have a little less bass. But for me its enough for analysing. The focal have more bass but dont know if this really helps. In the mids and highs the focal are much less clear and detailed. So sound more like a Hifi Speaker. I send the focal back and keep the yamaha. If you want more bass take the hs8. But in my room the focal was to much. The advantaged of the HS7 is you can hear clear and detailed already at low volume level 😉

I listened to these two in a showroom the other day on an A/B comparison with a range of music. The top end on the focal is definitely smoother and with the bump above 10k feels like much more top end extension (although I think I'd want to trim some of that high end down ever so slightly). I don't know what trickery focal have done but the smaller bass driver feels like it has just as much extension at the bottom as well. Granted the midrange is slightly different to the Yamaha but you can always use a little EQ here. What is clearly different in person when you listen to these is that the fiberglass sandwich cone on the focal is quite a bit better at reproducing transient detail in the bass and low mids and the instrument definition and soundstage/imaging created by the focal is more significant than the sound on this video would lead you to believe. They're a quality box for the money and while they may not be perfect, frequency response can be adjusted with EQ, while transient response (which comes from driver motor strength, cone rigidity etc.) cannot. So I'd opt for the focals (perhaps with a touch of EQ here and there) for this reason. Everything is very tight and crisp on the focals, the Yamaha's are just a little bit 'wooly' in places, not by much but enough that I noticed.

Just picked up the focal evo 80. I’ve had the Adam T8V, Tannoy Gold 7 and JBL Mk6. The focals eat all of those for lunch. I am beyond impressed with the imaging and accuracy. Night and day

I’ve had both the HS8 and Alpha 65 Evo. The latter is more accurate in the low-mids and smoother at the top. The Yamahas are fine once you’re used to them, but the Focals are just more accurate to the source and translate more easily. In some cases, much more easily.

this is what i hear, but the focal seem hyped in the mid bass region, they got a little bloat there but also offers superior stereo detail. the yamaha has very thin lower mids. both have small issues at the end of the day.
@JohnWuMastermind2 жыл бұрын
The Focals are good for cleaning and shaping frequencies when Mixing. The Yamahas HS8 are good for level adjusting when mixing. The combination of both gives excellent mixes These 2 compliment each other for those who can afford both

These speakers are within US $100 for the pair, so based on price they are a fair comparison. It's too close to tell over headphones and compressed audio for most tracks. The Focal have a bit more noticeable mid/upper bass response, which the graphs seem to confirm. For a studio monitor, I might prefer the Yamaha between the two but again, it's close in this format.

@thesampleguyco2 жыл бұрын
Close call, on some tracks you can't tell much of a difference at all. For the others, I believe the focal wins this comparison. It has a slightly more full and rich sound. Although I'm not sure how both of these would translate your own mixes. That is the most important thing when it comes to choosing monitors.

I watched previous videos of adams vs these focals adam just not touched the focals in the quality of the sound but the hs8 are just there like if focals are 100% then hs8 are 98% close but it is also surprising how a 6.5 inch cone gets so much bass response slightly more than 8inch hs8s wow hs8s are legends like ns10s happy to have hs8s poor adams t7v a7x

The Yamaha seems to keep it in control a bit more in general, for 'homefun' extra growl the Focal delivers that a little more, for the balance and fatique I would prefer the Yamaha's.

I had a chance to listen to the focal alphas in person, the tweeter does not sound very good. the treble is disconnected from the woofer. if you like a cheap metallic sound then I guess its cool.

Focal mid-bass is thicker, the balance is better, but i hear the box more maybe by the front reflex output. The individual taste decides:-). Thx, compare again!

I also have the impression that the bass reflex at the front alters the perception of the microphones between the two speakers.

@@Astro-X-Ent thanks but my question should have been directed to @Kesa Mek who I assume has compared them for real in person
@kesamek85372 жыл бұрын
@@JohnJones-yw3dm hi answer about original 65, I find most 6/7/8 inch monitors I've tried that seem genuinely quite flat and sound close to source material (Yamaha HS8, Evo 65 popular ones) can make it somewhat difficult to actually mix mids quickly, the temptation to under/over eq in that area 'not a clear decision' often for me on such monitors, but a monitor with slight emphasis in upper mids for me makes the job a lot easier ... that's the original 65. It is immediately obvious mixing on such monitors when you have gone 'too much' in the mids, on vocals or guitars anything dominantly midrange. Listen to comparison video of original Alpha 65 and Evo on this channel, it is realistic imo. Evo to me is ideal as a 'rough mastering' tool and superb as a producer speak, no question. Simply that original 65 has the slight emphasis where I consider it useful in a mixing device. This reason is also why for me the Yamaha HS5 has value in the mixing process. It puts some spotlight where it's needed for mixing the frequencies we're most sensitive to. Original 65 does it too though with softer treble and more bass than the HS5 of course. It's a personal matter but that's the reason in what I hope is a useful description. Pair of Evos and a pair of HS5s as second reference, totally good. That would work fine for me.

I'm really not a fan of these new alpha Evo at all. They sound very forced in comparison to the Yamaha here which deliver a much smoother response across the whole frequency range and the fact that the hs8 has a bigger cone it shouldn't really be the case... 🤷🏿♂️

better bass extension and punch, but not flat on evo... but i like that. Yamaha mids are more forward than focal and more mid detail. But the evo wins the highs, not as harss at yamaha's. this is tuff because when i mix its all about the mids, but I have a set of yamaha 5's with sub to do mids... evo would be a better set of second monitors. But if I had nothing I go with yamaha hs8 more flat full range sound for less money!
