There is 2 common mistakes that I like to mention (no money needed): 1- Not cleaning your laptop of phone camera so your image doesn't look blury; 2- Using this zoom chroma key options that makes you look goofy instead of accepting your surrounding and showing it to people as it is.

I've done something similar! I used EOS Webcam Utility with my T3i to get a clean feed, then I apply a custom LUT in OBS and send the video out of OBS as a virtual camera. I also use a teleprompter with a tablet on the Zoom call so that it looks like I'm looking at the people on the call. Great video!

How do you get the zoom call into your tablet? Do you join the call with two accounts?

Some great tips here! I do most of these things, but hadn't thought of using a teleprompter (mainly because I don't own one) or a LUT. I use my Fuji X-T3 with a 35/1.4 lens and plug the USB right into the computer, using the webcam utility (with an in-built Eterna film emulation) and OBS. I bounce a light off the wall in front of me and overlay a vignette. Rode NT 1 into the Audient iD14 and I look and sound great :)

I usually use the camera. If the call is important, i set it up at eye level at in front of the windows. During my last interview, nobody mentioned anything, until I talked about my hobbies which includes photography and that I was using it as webcam. The interviewer was something like “oh that’s why look so good, I was wondering, very cool”. But even with just the camera people notice. So yeah, just use that

I have an overkill setup for video calls as well, I relate with everything in the video. I use my old Canon EOS 60D with a Sigma Art 30mm, and an AKG P120 for audio. Just another recommendation would be using the Canon Webcam Utility for using your camera as a webcam. It helps to keep the camera on, and also remove any overlay that one gets in-camera or on HDMI feeds.

So during the lockdown and work from home setups I went from working out of my living room in a apartment, to working out of my office in our first house, then I renovated that same office. When I finally finished setting up that office one of the things I did was upgrade my webcam setup. I used a spare gorilla pod and a old pretty basic LED light. I conveniently had a window as well and considering the majority of my calls are during the day I don't need to worry too much about night time setups. The camera I use is a nice full frame camera shooting at F4 as well which doesn't create a ton of background blur but I still manage to get some separation. Having real blur does automatically jump the quality up because I find the auto cutout background blurs that people use on zoom calls to be really obvious and almost always looks really bad. the RESULT... I have actually got a lot of complements from people on the quality of the setup. IF I really wanted to go a little further I would no doubt dress the scene behind me a little more with a plant instead of a printer and maybe a light in the corner. BUT even without these it still absolutely blows away the majority of the setups I have seen. ALL that said I happened to already own a mirrorless camera that easily plugs in via USB to be used as a webcam. I already had a space LED light and gorilla pod that again was not even being used. So this setup was stupid easy to setup and cost me nothing extra. I suspect most people do not have this kind of kit just hanging out in their office.

4:42 you know you can go a bit ferther by creating a profile and changing the screens resolution, might need a restart but it means you can turn you camera in to a box. And use an immage or a giff to add lighting from your monitor

I will admit to trying to get the lighting better, and I am using a T2i (canon has a free program that allows you to use it as a webcam, btw). But I never considered using a teleprompter or a camera that can use LUTS. Certainly overkill, something I am going to have to consider. 😉

I use my Rode NT1 through my Zoom H6 to get much better audio for MS Teams meetings. My colleagues have remarked on the difference over the old headset systems we use, but my camera is old school - a Nikon D700 - which doesn't shoot video. Might play around with my iPhone to see if I can use it's camera for streaming to Teams. Thanks Simon for some great ideas !

using a telepronter for a zoom call? WTF I'm going to criticize it a bit. It's not in a destructive way but it seems that your own image is much more important than seeing who you are calling. Aren't you interested in seeing your parents the right way? a teleprompter is for reading sentences, not for seeing other people, hahaha, that detail seems excessive to me.
