Had to reupload TWICE because of frame rate issues. Hooray for a 1 AM release that will flop. Sorry!
I know, I know! It takes me forever to do small tasks. That’s what you get when you are thorough and working with a car where every other nut or bolt is wrong and you actually lube and torque everything.
Sorry for the long delay between videos. Had to work on my mom’s car quite a bit to keep her safe and Jaycob from Rust Belt Garage is here right now. Priorities!
Took at least 6 hours to edit this video, just like the last one.
Thanks for watching as always, everyone. Means so much me!

Anti-seize often seals the fate of already somewhat stripped threads, and often isn't accounted for in torque specs. It reduces the thread friction so much that you will get more turns before you reach a given torque. Made it all the way, as usual! Good to see it all coming together; the next video is gonna be great!
@802Garage
@802Garage 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah for sure. I reviewed my footage and the hole definitely had issues ahead of time. I'm sure the reduced friction didn't help with the aluminum though. I should have just aimed for like 35 foot pounds or something. I did get a helicoil kit though so should be all set.
@blindabinda1234

@@802Garage helicoil will take care of that no problem. With the layout of the other three you'd think that hole would have been towards the passenger side closer to the firewall.

Yeah actually, it is kind of odd placement. May have to do with it being an Evo design originally? I actually have helicoils to replace that and other stripped holes on the sub frame mount and starter now. :)

I made it all the way. When you need just a bit more out of a a shallow socket like that, slip it half off the extension, it allows the stud to go up into that drive hole. I’ve never seen anyone locktite & torque bell housing bolts lol, I get it though, you are making sure to solve all the issues it had. I always have some 3in1 oil with me & any threads I’m not using locktite on get a few drops, really helps things go together smoothly, likely the last people had cross threaded that mount bolt though, I noticed it was very loose as you were starting it...
@802Garage
@802Garage 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. And yeah for sure, I just want to give this car every chance it has to live after all the abuse it has had. The trans has already been messed up enough by previous owners, and trans flex can cause crank walk. I like to use anti seize on pretty much any bolt I might want to take out again, or at least some lube. Loctite only on those I really can't afford to have come loose. I did check the footage I had and the hole was already largely stripped before I got there. Thanks for commenting as always! I have some fun footage of Jaycob's PT Cruiser GT coming soon, BTW.

When you said you were going to put a lot of Loctite on it, I cringed. But then you put it on and I relaxed. Many years ago I used to deliver freight to a major mine here in Australia. I'd do favours for the stores guys and they'd return the favour. The amount of Loctite Red, Blue, Silver grease (super anti-friction grease), tapes, glues, fibreglass mesh and resins etc that they gave me over six months lasted me for the next five or six years. I had an old Valiant and a Kombi that used a lot of my graft & corruption treasure LOL. Edit: An example of the stash I had; I had 30 big cans of carby cleaner spray., 10 each of 50ml Loctite R & B, and heaps of stuff. I could have opened a shop (this was pre-interwebz).
@802Garage
@802Garage 6 жыл бұрын
My definition of a lot isn't the globs some people will use. XD I would never put more than a dab of red Loctite on something. Had to get a crankshaft pulley bolt out once that was slathered with it. Boy was that a fun hour or two of work, hahaha! I'm jealous of your hoard, I keep running out of supplies.

Thanks a lot for watching and commenting! I agree with you on putting in the right bolts the first time. That's why I ordered proper bell housing bolts, starter bolts, and a few others. I didn't actually know just how many wrong bolts I had before putting the rest of it back together and researching more. I have a list of probably 10-20 more bolts to order and replace soon. Luckily most of them are fairly easily accessible. I do also have a bin of OEM bolts somewhere from a part out, but I can't find it! I did clean and pain the sub frame and front mount at least, but the others will definitely get done later. :) Thanks again, I appreciate your input.

It was actually dumb. The intro I use right now was redownloaded due to lost files and apparently came in at 15 FPS. Since I loaded that into my timeline first it set the whole thing to 15 so even when I rendered at 30 it was messed up. So the file could say 30 FPS but it was still displaying basically 15 FPS. Had to find how to change the settings. Much annoying. You must be one of the lucky ones who live in a dry state. You can't own a car for a week here without surface rust on any bare metal. :P

I never uploaded multi-fps files, so I wouldn't know. I've dabbed into video editing/rendering, but I use good old Virtualdub mainly. It's a bit hands-on, so to speak, so when something goes wrong, everything goes wrong. Makes it hard to miss. :D I live in central France, for lack of a better word, so it gets wet during the winters, cars will rot if you don't pay attention to them. Did the wheel arches on my Saab 2 years ago and it's already showing signs of rust. :( Just about finished de-rusting the Stagea last month, we'll see how it fares. :) I really like how you're doing all that work in your backyard, reminds me a lot of how I work on my own cars, in my own backyard and how I wish I had a proper shop. Keep them videos coming, they're both entertaining and inspirational. :)

No disrespect but, jumping christ on a hot plate.... This is a 90s DSM, not a spacecraft. Bolting the trans to the engine should be a 5 minute thing. Get a 3/8 impact and ram the bell housing blots home my dude. As a matter of fact, do that to all the bolts. Unless you're planning on throwing this thing in the Concours d'Elegance. But even then I don't think they check bolt torque. Enjoyed the video other than that.
@802Garage
@802Garage 2 жыл бұрын
Do you know the issues these cars have if you DON'T torque the transmission properly? I mean, I explained them in the video and they're literally why I had to diagnose issues a Mitsubishi dealer couldn't figure out after replacing the flywheel twice and why I had to remove the transmission and sleeve the starter bolt holes. People doing exactly what you described is why I had problems. By the way, if I was doing it off camera, it would take 5 minutes. Filming and explaining as well as providing specs and tips adds huge amounts of time. Additionally, if I'm going to make a video on a topic, I'm going to show how to do it right, not half ass it. I do lots of stuff off camera that I wouldn't necessarily recommend. When it comes to bolts involving the drivetrain, sealing, or rotating components, I use torque specs. With very good reason. I've seen what happens when people don't. Thanks for the comment.

@@802Garage I see I got you in your feels, my apologies for that. I was trying to be respectful. Yes, I do understand the seriousness of proper torque, I've been spinning wrenches professionally for ~15 years and I've owned quite a few Neons, PT Cruiser GTs an Eclipse or 2 (current Eclipse has over 230k on the original motor and I've installed 2 clutches) and even auto-crossed a couple of those. In my career, I've not had a single car come back or blown a motor because the bell housing or motor mount bolts were too tight. I've also not seen anyone else have a comeback for over torqued bell housing or motor mount bolts. Too loose or tightening bolts down while the bell housing is misaligned, yes. If clearances are as critical you make them here, you should be using a plasti-guage and or feeler gauges and measure for clearance. Again, thank you for the video and I'm truly sorry I got in your feels. I guess I've been in the business too long and I'm callus.
@802Garage
@802Garage 2 жыл бұрын
@@yubentrolled7097 I'm not in any feels. I replied in a respectful and straight forward manner. We weren't talking about clearances that would requite plastigauge, we were talking about clamping force as well as damaged threads or loosening bolts if anything. So you're really conflating entirely different issues. The point of a torque spec is to ensure a proper clamping load without going out of spec on the bolt or threaded material, which I'm sure you know. I have seen many damaged threads and bolts as well as failures due to improper torque. I understand being callous. I also know how to put together a car without using a torque wrench once. It's still not the "correct" way to do it, and I'm not going to make a video without at least advising people of the proper procedures. You do you on your cars and I'll do me on mine. I have done plenty of customer cars without torqueing every bolt to spec of course, but when I put their lug nuts on I still use a torque wrench because then I can reassure them it was done properly and I can cover my own ass as well. Just how I do things. Have a nice day.
