I normally avoid greasing anything around the clutch other than the pivot ball, especially on anything rotating as it will end up flying out and getting onto the clutch disk(s), even if they provide some. It causes more problems then it helps. The clutch will be done before the splines ever wear out.
@802Garage
@802Garage 6 жыл бұрын
An honor as always to get a comment from you. :) Appreciate the advice. I've never actually been worried about the splines getting ruined so much as the clutch disk not sliding freely. I totally see your point though. The trans is back in the car, so hopefully it won't cause any issues. Won't be pushing any extra power for quite a while anyways. ;)

Yaaas. It's kind of therapeutic to keep finding and fixing things that are wrong with this car. Found some more today though. Need to repair or replace a ball joint boot and found some more hardware store bolts that aren't right. The work never ends!

I feel like an imitation scotty kilmer intro is appropriate for all your videos from now on lol😅. Not the whole thing, but just a small "rev up your engines," head nod. and a quick rev clip from the Subie.

802 Garage No need to be sorry friend, it's not your fault KZfaq doesn't show your videos in my feed. I like that you talked about how the stuff works a lot, it's interesting to learn and I'd guess most of it can be useful on all manual trans cars.

Not for now. I thought about it, but it didn't seem worth the effort. It has been painted in the past I think, which makes it a bit of extra work. I did just get a pressure washer though, so that might help. I did thoroughly clean and degrease the trans, but this is as good as it got. If/when I pull the engine and trans to clean/paint the bay though it may be in the cards to prettify it. Thanks a lot! Hahaha. New videos very soon.

The new throw out bearing looks to be the OEM design. The breather needs to be installed with RTV. Otherwise they tend to leak.

Hey thanks a lot! Glad to be installing a more suitable part then. Good call on the RTV. I'll definitely mention it in a video soon since the breather kept wanting to fall out. Still need to pop it back in. Thanks again.

So I just re installed my trans that hasn’t given me any issues before. With a New clutch flywheel and fork and release bearing. But now that it’s installed it shifts through gears 1-5 like nothing but when it comes to reverse it doesn’t wanna go in at all it feels like it’s hitting something. But I checked and there’s nothing in its way. Any ideas ? Also I think my slave cylinder needs bled idk if that could be causing it
@802Garage
@802Garage 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed this comment! Hope you solved the issue. My first guess would either be worn shifter bushings on the end of the shift cables at the transmission or a worn component in the shifter assembly itself. Jafromobile has a great video on the shifter rebuild. Otherwise, yes make sure your hydraulics are properly bled and the clutch pedal is adjusted properly. Jafro has good videos on that as well.

This one is even worse being AWD! The transfer case honestly isn't bad though. Just adds the complexity of about 5 bolts, pulling the exhaust down pipe off, and wrangling the driveshaft.

Super excited to see it almost coming together now! I was gonna ask, if you ever had to change those oil seals on the outputs on both sides, could you maybe do a video of it? I think on mine both are leaking, and I'm not sure if it's doable while still on the car. Is it just a matter of prying the old ones out and tapping the new ones in?
@802Garage
@802Garage 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! I have not had to change the axle shaft seals yet. If mine leak, I'll be doing a video on it! It is doable with the trans still in the car. If it's a GSX you will have to remove the transfer case, which is actually pretty simple. If you need to do both, just remove both axles and then you basically pry the seals out or actually tap them out from the other side by poking something long through the shaft hole and hammering on it. When you replace them you just want to make sure the surfaces are perfectly clean and smooth and I would put a bit of grease all over the seals. If you have any more questions let me know and I'll drop a couple links I referenced below. www.dsmtuners.com/threads/axle-seal-replacement.216951 www.dsmtuners.com/threads/driver-side-cv-axle-seal-removal.394553

What’s the reason for the shims on the pivot ball ?
@802Garage
@802Garage Жыл бұрын
Jafromobile has good videos on this. Generally, you shouldn't need to if everything else is set up properly. It's to make sure the clutch fork has enough movement relative to the slave cylinder rod to fully release the clutch. It moves the pivot point closer to the engine, making the slave end of the fork closer to the slave.

The timing of this is strange. The clutch on my FR-S has started making a loud screech when I let it out, and I've read online that it's likely being caused by the clutch fork or throwout bearing.
@blindabinda1234
@blindabinda1234 6 жыл бұрын
Clell Biggs most likely the throwout bearing. Do you rest your foot on the clutch a little while driving? Doing that or holding the clutch in while waiting at a red light can make it wear faster.

Nah, I've only had the car a couple of months and haven't driven it much. Don't know whether the previous owner rode the clutch or if it's just normal wear and tear (it has 40,000 miles). This isn't my video but this is what it sounds like: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i71pZ6d6s924d4k.html Edit: It only does it after the car has warmed up. When you first get in the car it doesn't make the noise.

Oh oh oh I know what this is! I don't own a BRZ/FR-S/86, but for some reason I read up on this. Let me find you a link.
@802Garage
@802Garage 6 жыл бұрын
Found the link. If it's happening when you press the clutch in and out, it's most likely the pivot the slave cylinder presses on. Just needs grease. Check this out! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btxjfZSd2eDNd2Q.html Apparently a super common problem. If that doesn't fix it, unfortunately it is most likely your throwout bearing. No guarantees though. Take a video if this doesn't fix it.

That giant rust hole in the strut tower is alarming. Thats serious. That car is not safe for the road without rust repairs that would cost more than the car. Abort and get a used rust free shell. You will thank me later.
@802Garage
@802Garage 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I'm definitely aware the vehicle is not safe as is. The fortunate part is the rust repairs will be very inexpensive for me, since I'll be doing them all myself. There are only so many shells left, and any clean shell in my area goes for a lot of money. Originally this car was going to be a part out, but I decided to restore it instead. Going to be an absolute ton of work, but people have repaired far worse. Thanks again!
