This is a terrific review. I have a pretty good idea of how they sound from your description, that’s how awesome this review was. Plus your camera and your audio are top notch! You should go back and redo that HD 660 S review and get into the kind of detail about the sound like you did with this one.

Thank you sir for a very helpful review Very refreshing after listening to another recent reviewer that seemed to care only about graphs and bashing Beyerdynamic. He seemed to snicker and laugh constantly throughout his review and put people down if they disagreed. Your review was very informative and has helped me decide on whether to purchase these headphones . Thank you.

I really wanted your review before getting them - but I got them a month ago based on Zeos's review and your inclusion of them in the "best headphones" list. So now I'm happy you got a review up AND like 'em as much as I do :D I'm coming from HD650 and these Beyers are a winner! I have one question for you (and others who have them): Do you get bass rattling at very high volumes? I think a proper amp might help with that.

I definitely need one too. I recently bought the DT880 Premium 250 and although that one sounds amazing, I think a true -and flat response headphone might help me out with the little bit of shortcomings that I still seem to have

Hello DMS, thanks to your review, recently I bought DT1990Pro and Dragonfly Cobalt. As an Audiophile Newbie, my ear is not really trained. I can hear nice features in this combination, but I have nothing else to compare with. May I ask, in your opinion, is Cobalt sufficient enough to drive DT1990Pro? Or should I buy a THX AAA Amp to bring out the full potential of 1990? Looking forward to hearing from you! BR!!

I'm running the Fostex mark 3s through an r2r11 and thinking about shelling 450€ (500 usd) for either these or a pair of Argons. Which of the two would be a more considerable upgrade? I listen to all types of music but have been lately really into instrumentally heavily layered stuff like Swans.

QUESTION: I have the DT990 Pro 250 Ohm version and the 600 Ohm versions. At some point they both started to crackle on high bass. Would that likely still be the case if I upgrade to a DT 1990? I also have the Sennheiser 660s and the T1 2nd Gen in mind. Or should I be looking at something else altogether? My budget is $1000. Oh…and I’m buying this primarily for action and sci-fi movies. Thanks!!
@Assimilator702

People love to criticize the DT 990 and while they are a bit sharp due to the treble peak it’s a very simple fix. I use a thin layer of fleece over the driver. A piece of thin foam could also work. I have returned to the DT 990 600 ohm after not touching them for months and I’m AMAZED at what I’m hearing even after living with numerous headphones that are much more expensive and well regarded. I’m seriously considering selling some of my more recent purchases and recoup 75 to 85% of my money and just spend it on drum gear. Brands that range from A to Z.......literally.

Unrelated but just wondering if you could give me an opinion on the modhouse argon mkiii vs m1060 (+mods) for home use only, running off the latest nfb 11. My ideal frequency response is kinda flat with slightly elevated bass, and i place enjoyability over analytics. If you could offer me an extra opinion that would be great, ive been torn between these for a while. Im also willing to extend my budget out to around 400-450 if you have other suggestions, thanks

I've had these cans for about 5 months now, and I can't stress how much I love them. Upgraded from the DT770 Pro with a FiiO E17 portable amp to these 1990 pro's with a Schiit stack. @DMS3 TV, in your opinion, would it be worth upgrading my Modi 2/Magni 3 schiit stack? How big of a difference was there between the Magni 3 and your higher end amps you tested them with?
@NeoKronos44

How would you say sound changes from the E17 amp to the Schiit amp on the 1990s? Also, my 2 cents would be higher end amps definitely outplay the Magni family.

Hassab Saeed Its a way of equalizing a headphone to a specific target. That target is decided by measuring the response of a perfectly echoic room and translating that response to a headphone. Very insightful review! I've just bought them with confidence thanks to you and Z. I know you said they scale nicely but I'm driving these with an Aune X7s, and have a Schiit SYS to switch between my vinyl listening and digital (ES9218+ DAC/amp at low/mid output to minimize distortion and crosstalk). Sounds incredible for the price. It definitely needs really good source material. With 44.1/16 it sounds close to a DT-880, 48/24 and up and wow, this thing shines!

Human ears have a hard time with narrow peaks and dips. Also, looking at your frequency response graphs, it looks like there is a resonance at ~4600Hz. As has been demonstrated by the "ortho wall" phenomenon, these types of resonances are largely inaudible unless there is something else going on as well, such as the massive spike in distortion on the M1060s. Also, how is the clamp? Do they stay in place?

@Toschh
@Toschh 4 жыл бұрын
I have the dt 990 and the soundblaster x7. My advice for you is to buy an ordinary dac amp combo and connect it to your ps4. Then buy a Modmic and plug it in to your controller and the mic will sound great. The x7 is not a good match for my 990. It doesn’t do the headphone justice. I need to crank up the eq to get trebles. And you don’t need that sorround. The headphones will work fine

Just got mine yesterday and they sound incredible. I have a Topping A30 Pro hpa connected via XLR and also using the XLR headphone input on the A30 Pro as opposed to the 1/8 or 1/4 options available on the unit. The A30 Pro is connected to a Yamaha MPX32 mixing console so the sound is pristine. I also believe that high quality headphones have a burn in time so the fidelity will improve over time. This was especially noticeable with my DT1770 Pro (250 ohm). I thought I’d purchased the worst sounding headphones in history. Even returned them only to realize after purchasing a pair of DT770s that they need to burn in. So there’s that. Less than 24 hours in but I swear I’m in love. 😂 A30 Pro will run you between $250-300. The XLR input was a major factor for me. Hardly any hpas seem to have one.

These or HD660s for soundstage/imaging? Both gaming/music.

Grobenotgrob 1990's for gaming, better soundstage. Also they have more bass if that is appealing to you for music.

Moon Rocks I'd prefer imaging. Still 1990?
@theoperator1761

Grobenotgrob I'll probably get ripped for this, but I'd say the 1990. They are close, but at least in gaming I had a much easier time picking people out in pubg with the 1990s...

I will say that for me beyers get uncomfortable and thats why I sold them. I think I am in the very small minority that say this though. Senns for comfort. I still miss the sound of the 1990s... And will probably buy them again just for that.

I just ended up buying 660s based on both DMS/Zeos review. "retarded imaging" on what Zeos says lol.

How do you compare it to the 400i i mean both of them are natural

The 1990s actually has bass, the 400i has zero bass, very rolled off.

DT1990 vs Elear can you give a quick comparison?
@DMS3TV
@DMS3TV 6 жыл бұрын
Elear has massive dips in the mid-range and treble, weighs more, and has almost no center image. I can only listen to it for about 3 minutes at a time before it drives me insane.

for DnB if you want to really go high I would say LCD-2 used or LCD2C if they go on sale. They would be a bit more wide and have a very spacious and detailed low end. Under that if you don't mind weight there's the EL8-titanium (if you're on IOS) and the normal EL8 closed backs (currently $339 from audeze)
@remoteferret
@remoteferret 6 жыл бұрын
Are the EL8C that much different from the open EL8? I got the open EL8 during their black friday sale and while I really like them, sometimes it does seem that bass lacks presence, although it does sound very clean. I know that tends to be the case for open backed vs closed back, but I wasn't sure of the extent, as these are my first open headphones (barring SR60s that I bought a couple years ago and returned the next day.)

Own both. For listening the Clears are superior. They are extremely balanced. Nothing is more than the other (bass, mid, treble). The 1990 is a great HP. Great dynamics, clear, and clean with emphasis on treble. Bass is great on both with Clear barely edging out 1990. Vocals on Clear are great all the time with no sibilance. The 1990 are good, but can be sibilant depending on the track. After $500 I think law of dimishing returns kicks in. The 1990 on sale are a great buy. Clears are on the low end price of high end HP's. They are worth it if you can afford the price. I just picked up the M570's and sound wise they are phenomenal for their price and currently on sale. I was smiling for days burning them in. Headband isn't the best. Otherwise build is actually good. They are the HD58X of planars. If budget is a concern those two are hard to beat. Still hate the clamp force on the 58X. Plan to give them to my GF so she can understand the HP addiction. Nothing like putting on your favorite track, leaning back in the chair, and closing your eyes. Enjoying every instrument and micro detail. Hearing people in the crowd talk or clap. Feels like you went to a concert and you haven't left your house.

@@ftlaud911 thank you very much. I just got my Arya (they are about 50/150h of burn in) and was looking for some great dynamics. I guess I will go for clear and 660s. Again thank you very much.

@@MititeluRadu - congrats on the Arya. Hell of a headphone. I had them for like 28 days. Compared them with Clears back to back for days. Arya wins and loses in certain areas. For general listening pleasure Clears wins for me. They have amazing dynamics. Smaller soundstage and more intimate. They are just so balanced. Arya is an experience. Have had the most wow moments of any headphone I have tried or owned. Check out shpongle - are you sphongled? Sounds just pop in left and right channels. I actually miss the Arya. Actually may buy them again soon. I'm still enjoying the M570's. For $200 they are amazing. Also been forcing myself to listen to the DT 1990's. Just ordered Dekoni Hybrids pads to try them. They are really good HP's just need less treble emphasis. We shall see if pads help. I love their looks and design.

@@ftlaud911 thank you. At 50h I can't say I am impressed. Sure the sound signature is different from everything I tried so far, but so far I would take my T50RP or DT880 600ohm over Arya. I do expect that vail to go away after the burn in but they do something strange with the low end. So far low end sounds more like an on/off signal. Hope it will all get better. Also I will hold my final score after I will finish my system.

@@MititeluRadu - was never impressed with low end on the Arya. They do like power and to play loud. Definitely not a low listening HP. As for bass I have found that most planars kick quickly and decay is extremely fast. No rumble like a Dynamic. For $1600 it was tough for me to swallow. Would have kept Clears, but there was a rattle in ear cup. Yet to try an Audeze or ZMF, but I have changed my mind. For now I would rather have more mid-fi cans to switch it up. I have been chasing the dragon only to realize that no headphone is perfect. We all hear differently and have different gear which can affect the sound. Now I am just buying variety at $500 -600 max cans. Figure the more I role the dice the more likely I will find a winning combo. Looking at the RME ADI-2 DAC and questioning if it's worth it. Want to be done on Hardware and build off it. Topping has the A90/D90 or L30/E30. Schitt just released the Magnius with modius or bifrost2. Choices are plenty. What is the best combo that will stop me from looking and wanting to buy is the question.
